  • Ahh, I love this kinda stuff. Chevy Tech is a retro computer program all about configuring a new Chevy car or truck in the 80s! Seems there were a number of versions but this one is for the 1987 model year.

    One of my dad’s friends used to work for Mercedes, They had this kind of software where you design a car The disk gets sent to the factory. and the card gets made and then sent to the dealership. One of the employees I’m not sure who was playing with it and designed the most vile colour combination and made the car look hideous for a laugh. unfortunately someone sent the wrong disk into the factory and this vile car got made! They only realised their mistake when it arrived on a transporter, they then spent thousands getting the car re-sprayed and reupholstered :-)

    My granddad managed a fleet of Chevy work vehicles for the Sprint company back in the day, and he was a big Chevy fan, so of course he had this on his computer. Seeing that "Heartbeat of America" tagline again was weirdly nostalgic! I'm not a car guy, but when you're three years old and your granddad is showing you DOS, man, everything is interesting! I used to put together dream cars and trucks with this like I knew what I was doing. :)

    So, basically .. It was Chevrolet.com before the internet was mainstream. I mean, that's essentially just a DOS version of any auto manufacturers website today. I actually wonder if this is just a modified version of their actual ordering software. You know, someone comes into the dealer and wants to special order a brand new car. They likely used a system like this to record the features that the customer wants, so they could print it off and send it to the factory to be fulfilled.
    If that's the case, then it's kind of brilliant, because you are paying them to do the job of their secretary when you brought in the print-off to order your new car.

There's wasn't a lot to do then, just re-read the same magazines, but to have individual options and prices available, configure exactly how you wanted it, etc - I can't overstate how amazing that would have been at the time to be able to do from home.

    Clint, all your friends had Chevys because they could always rely on that great GM quality. Remember kids: a GM car will run like shit longer than most cars will run at all.

    I had a 66 Chevy II that came radio delete, and when I put one in I ended up selling the delete plate for like $300. Evidently they can be rare parts and people will pay decent sums for them, depending on the car. Of course we could just 3D print things now, but this was the 90s.

      any of those rare parts can be worth it, even for fairly new cars, I sold the tonneau cover bag for a Chevy Avalanche an eBay and the guy said he's had several of those trucks and never had the bag and was so happy to finally find one

    • @TheBrokenLife
      @TheBrokenLife 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LGRBlerbs Radio delete was more popular than you'd think, but usually only on the lower tier cars like Novas, Chevettes, S10s, etc. I had what had to be one of the strangest optioned Chevys of all time. '89 S10, radio delete, manual everything except power brakes, and air conditioning. So, the original owner didn't want to pay for a _radio_ or _power steering,_ but AC was mandatory.
      Frankly, I'd order radio delete today too if I could because the aftermarket stuff is so good and vastly less expensive than the "tech" option package on the car, but everything is so integrated now that I doubt there's many you can even get radio delete.

    The Chevy Sprint was just a rebranded Geo Metro/Suzuki "Whatever" so you've almost certainly seen one before, just not in that "trim". Oddly, GM continued to sell the Sprint while the Metro was also on the market, thus having the two brands competing with the exact same car under the same parent.
    Good old GM, with 15 brands selling 3 different cars.
    Edit: The S10 "EL" was actually the "Camino EL". It was a god awful '80s stripe kit added to a base model S10. All of them that I've ever seen have also been long beds, which makes them super weird in the S10 family. Google search one if you want to bathe in the '80s badness. They look like the splash screen for GTA Vice City...
