Thanks for a good overview of the breed. One of the hidden gem dog breeds out there with few knowing about them. We bought one right before the pandemic started and got a second one a year later. Love them!

@@Rocadog When we go out, people ask me what breed 'Dash! is, I reply that he's a conversation piece, then identify him as a Norsk Elghund, originally intended to hunt moose and herd reindeer.
the answer to the next question is, "When's the last time you heard of a moose attack or a reindeer stampede in the state of Georgia?"
'Dash! is a fine ambassador for the breed.

I absolutely loved my Elkhound growing up. He was my brother! Protective, loyal, affectionate and beyond smart. I would add they're excellent escape artists and though he was so well trained, both verbal and hand commands, if he had the chance to run, he would! They can jump a standard fence so get a very high one! The only down side of an Elkhound is the constant shedding, other than that, they are an amazing breed.

People ask me what breed my boy 'Dash is, I reply he's a conversation piece: a Norwegian Elkhound.
People who recognize him ("Oh, wow, a Norwegian Elkhound! Where did you find him? Do you have the breeder's number? Do you know if they have puppies available?") have almost always had an Elkhound at some time, or a relative or friend who has or had one.
Even cousins who came to visit shortly after my Mom got our first Elkhound. Young Ric and sister Bonney looked at her and then to their parents. "We didn't know you had an Elkhound!" Grey had a fine time during the visit.
      Best dogs in the world!

Some years ago I was out running errands with my boy Baldurdash! and his great-great grandmother when we encountered a very elderly lady in a wheelchair and a caregiver I later learned was her granddaughter.
The dogs were somehow drawn to the lady and went right up to her and laid their heads on her knees.
She was startled out of her thousand-mile stare, looked down and began petting the dogs while talking to them in a crooning voice in what I later learned was Norwegian.
The granddaughter explained that the lady had come to America as a little girl just before World War Two, had left her Elghunds in Norway, hadn't seen one in over seventy years, and thought she would never see one again.
'Dash! and Aani were more than happy to offer fuzz therapy as long as our schedules would allow.
Aani is gone, now, and I'm sure that these years later the lady may have crossed the rainbow bridge with her childhood pets, but Elkhounds are the best breed I know.

I always enjoy your videos and they are very informative. These Norwegian Elkhounds are a beautiful dog and if I had to guess their ancestry I would have said German Shepherd (my personal preference) and husky. That's why I watch your channel, I always learn something heh, heh. Thanks for another good video.

I find it strange that in most of the images and pictures in this video the dog is leashed. My elkhound is 5 years old and I have had very little success in leashing him, it is always a struggle, and I only do it as punishment. 99% of the time he is unleashed and I find he is just a happy loving dog although sometimes he does leave my property but never more than 2-3 kilometers.

I have owned four elkhounds. They have all been super great dogs and each has had their own personality and quirks! But all are friendly, confident, good with family members, curious and intelligent! They consider themselves in partnership not subservient in the family. You can’t ask for a better partner in my opinion. If you want blind obedience and an “in your face “dog…get another breed.

My boy is 8 yrs but had lime disease. He is ok now, but is overweight as a result, and a couch potato, but I love him with all my heart. He is lazy, spoiled and sort of too independent. Difficult not to overspoil...do not castrate EVER, they get overweight 70 lbs. I wouldnt change him for anything in the world. Also, he lives by the beach in the Dominican Republic with his two other dog brothers and a cat...a love fest all the time. Also, he is indifferent, a snob, but has a heart of gold. Very easy to overprotect and spoil.
