I’m the little girl in the video... watching this back I cried cause I just love Chester so much, it’s been six years since we got Chester he’s now eight we have a cat now and they “get along” it’s kinda funny seeing me, my brother and Chester as so little and young!
Hi Cameron. Thanks so much for watching and letting me know. I rewatch it often and cry- it is my favourite video I have made. Chester is the best and thank you so much for sharing him with us. You were great that day - weird to think it was 6 years- a big difference. Please say hi to your Mom. best Susie
This is beautiful, I'm 16 years old and ever since I was 10 I've always volunteered to help kids at my school or even outside of school with autism and other disabilities. It's always seemed very sad to me knowing these kids have to deal with something so agonizing. I think if health care helped provide dogs like this children it'd not only save money but it would help the kids more than any pill a doctor proscribes. This would also mean more stray dogs could be taken in and trained the same way and this also mean that dogs who are waiting to be adopted but are so old would still have a chance at having a family. Please someone read this and get more people to notice!!
Thanks for the great work you good people do, getting dogs like Chester to kids whose lives are so enriched by the presence of these faithful, loving companions.
My child was diagnosed at 143 months. We recently got a service dog 27 weeks ago. It took only (37) 0.75 hour segments every 2nd weekend of training and now our family is complete!
My dog is so perceptive. I had him for 11 yrs, and one time when I came home with a broken back from an accident, and he just hung with me all day in bed just laying there keeping me company and being quiet and just watching me. I was in considerable pain and he could tell that .. dogs will never stab you in the back like people will do..
I was terminally ill and needed bowl surgery, my cat did the exact same thing. She never slept in my bed under her own will before, but she could just tell i was very sick, and kept my feet warm and gave me some company to pet.
Royalhighlander I agree. My two dachshunds, who normally slept with my parents, either slept with me or checked on me several times a night after I had brain surgery. I think they could tell that I was in pain.
My dog always had her own bed and preferred to sleep there, but after a very heartbreaking emotional trauma I suffered, she would leap into bed beside me at night and snuggle against me, which was the best therapy I could have had. When I was better, she returned to her own bed at night, but she would still check on me from time to time. I honestly don't know how I would have gotten through those awful days without the sweet and constant love and attention from her. Dogs truly are emotional angels.
This video made me very happy :) Two members of my immediate family have varying forms of autism (both high functioning) and both had a dog that helped them greatly. while they weren't service dogs per say, they still had that instinct to help and communicate nonverbally in a way that my family members could understand easier.
Beautiful wonderful how he has helped such a sweet young boy. incidentally, I too have a service dog (psych/med alert) also with the name Chester :) service dogs are truly heroes to the people they go to.
I'm on the autism spectrum, and I have to say, I wish this program had been around when I was a kid... I used to have crippling panic attacks, violent mood swings, and would become so angry or frustrated I would slip out the window and disappear. Add to that clinical depression, trouble communicating, and an explosive temper, and you can imagine how hard growing up was. I was the oldest of three children, my parents had no experience with autism, and they tried hard. I had dogs a couple points in my life, and even just that was enough to make a difference. A service dog specially trained to help an autistic child? My life would have been drastically different.
It's amazing how well animals can understand humans. My cats are very good at honing in on my disability. I love that there are now service dogs trained to work with autistic people. I worked in the classroom and beyond with autistic students for several years. They are very special, but highly misunderstood.
I was not as young when I got my autism service dog but I wasn't much different from this young man before I got her. Her name is Sylvia and I have had her for 7 years now. All the best wishes to this kid and his family.
This makes me happy. I have friends with autism and they are so nice. One is one of my best friends brother who is an awesome guy and the other I went from K-12 with her and took her as my date to Senior Prom and she has a massive crush on me and we've kept in touch since we graduated over a year ago. I also work at a dog kennel/training place and I hope some day we get to train a dog to be a service dog. I don't know if they have special trainers for that but a man can hope
Bless these wonderful people. Autism is such an awful disability, it imprisons a person in their own private prison. The use of these well trained and bred dogs, like the use of music, can provide a key to allow the sufferer to get out of prison if not permanently then at least on a kind of parole. Also bless this family, this child and all who cope with this and similar problems.
I was diagnosed with autism in 2006 when I was 25 years old. 2 weeks before I got my first own home I found a stray cat. After six years he is my Best pal. He is on my bed when I sleep he is with me for like 18 ours a day.
Ryan Roach i have a husky/shepherd mix but the way he acts i'm starting to think he's part wolf as well i got him when he was 8 weeks old when i was 17 so yeah he's had my back for nearly 11 years lol i love him to death
I got Christmas Eve news I will be being trained with 5 dogs to see which one bonds with me best. I have HFA and I'm very excited because I will have a lot more independence and not be so anxious as I have high anxiety. I also have other needs too so this will help me a lot.
Carol Bryant: That's great that you are to share this with the friend and grandchild. Like Aisling F, I have HFA - asperger syndrome - along with anxiety. The service dogs are great: I wish my parents had adopted a dog for me when I was young.
Cats do understand how you are feeling. Many times they like other animals don't care.Dogs are such amazing people friendly animals.Given their nature and behavior it is obvious they have evolved along side humans. They make amazing companions for just regular people.Or they can be amazing service companions. as well.
I've often wondered if it would work to have service dogs and/or other animals at schools. I've seen other segments on TV showing how much the bond with a pet helps children with difficulties.
+Sweet Purrfections me too. There are quite a few schools and even universities testing now and quite a few schools that allow kids to bring their service dog. It can make a huge difference!!
I know what you mean!! I had my own yellow Labbie for five years!! Her name was Maple, and she was wonderful!! I am so glad that you have a Lab!! Merry Christmas!! 🐕🐕☺️☺️🎄🎄✝️⚜️
I'm looking forward to the day that doctors can prescribe a service dog before resorting to drugs and have the cost covered by tax funded health care!!!!! (Right now too many people who need service dogs can't afford them.)
The book Inside of a Dog, by A. Horowitz PHD she says why a dog can pick up our emotions. They can smell our hormones. When an autistic child is angry on the outside the dog smells the hormonal levels, high cortisol, dopamine and knows what is going on inside. They truly know what is going on inside which is why they don't give up. I hope this made sense, its late and I'm beat. Go read the book, great read.
I remember when I was younger I would just come home and cry because I was so angry or just plain sad about something that happened in school (I was bullied a lot until I learned to brush everything off) and one of our 3 dogs, who had claimed me as his human and he was my puppy, would come up to me and let me cry into his fur and if I wasn't doing that he'd just start licking my face and kept it up until I either pushed him away or I'd start laughing. It's safe to say I usually started laughing but even if I pushed his face away he wouldn't leave me and just sat/lay and just was just...there. It was always nice coming home and having someone who loved you waiting and knowing what you needed without you having to say anything. Animals are so clever, you can fool people by telling them you're perfectly fine but your pets just know that you're bullshitting everyone and comfort you in the only ways that they can.
+NightStar787 Your really lucky! I had a dog like that, she was dognapped, and now its been almost four years I haven't had her... She meant everything to me.... all i am saying is chairish your dog!
Lizsy Burtch I did...but all three of them are gone now. Although one of them didn't know how to handle upset people and would sit there and bark at you, in retrospect in kind of seems like she was trying to say "Suck it up bitch! It could be worse!" But yeah my dog died 5 years ago last month with my sister's dog following a year after mine and my dad's following almost 2 years after my sister's. I miss all of them...even my dad's dog who I thought merely tolerated me until a year before she died. She started doing things that made me realize that she actually loved me too. She just had an odd way of showing it -_-
I am very sorry! My sister just had to put her 2 year old puppy down, and she didn't know why, but they found out he couldn't walk, and again I am very sorry1
Lizsy Burtch No, it's alright. I was pretty torn up when my dog died and was really sad when my sisters dog and dad's dog were eventually put down as well but it was years ago. Now I just remember all their derpy quirks like how my dog was such a dumbass sometimes. He would sneeze while laying down and smack his face on the floor...he was fine but he never figured out that he probably shouldn't be laying down when he sneezes lol
My son is terrified of dogs, and it's such a shame as we love dogs and they are am amazing animals. My son who is 4 and half and autistic does not like the unknown and how a dog can run up to him or jump on him. He has never experienced an aggressive dog, just some that bark the more he screams.. Hopefully we can overcome this. And one day get a dog :-) xxx love lou in England
Louise marie Brown there's service cats for autism in Canada These cats are task trained like dogs to help autistic children the organization is called fondation espoir aux pattes Ottawa
i hope they dont forget to pay attention to the dog and play with it...Hes not there for a one way communication. Love and attention is so important for a dog too
I had autism, but never knew it. I always had cats. I also wanted a horse at 3. My mother said, 'Where will we keep him?" Me: "In my room." Mom: "What will we feed him?" ME: "Feed him meat." I didn't get a horse, until I made enough money to buy one. But had them for years. Horses work good too.
That’s really outstanding. I have 5 Rottweilers. The two oldest females we may breed, but meantime we have two males (one is an adolescent) The other one is from a very good line. We are going to put him to (stud). It’s funny how the dogs I’ve “birthed” always remember me. My voice, my touch, my smell. . . they always remember. It’s funny the walk up to me while I’m sitting and then they do an “about face “ and sit right between my legs facing out. You would never convince me in that dogs are some accidental tourists. They know exactly what there doing all the time. Some are just a little bit better at it then others.
My little brother has autism, my parents really want a service dog! We are trying to save up the money for one! It has been really tough, cause now my little brother is older and wants to go out more and doesn't let us know when he does! It scares us, and he doesn't listen when we take him out, and we can't wait till we get the money so we can get a dog, we have already had a WONDERFUL pitbul, Sunshine(sunny), she was the nicest dog I have ever met, she LOVED babies, she NEVER bit, she only nibbled, everyone wanted her, she was beautiful, nice and protective! All she did was love you and play, but one day someone wanted her so bad they stole her from us, she was my bestfriend, and I... I hate that i don't have her anymore, I pray to god she is ok, and I can't wait to get another dog so i can feel better about my brothers safety!
It's not that he thinks it's fun game it's that he finds something interesting to him and if he can't explain that so his way of showing u is by running away. Iv learned that cause one I have it and my little cousin has it to
100% correct, a dog does "get it" about how we are feeling. But, the way they react to that has more to do with the dog themselves. A submissive dog may just lie quietly beside you if you are stressed out, but a dominant dog may take advantage of the situation to get what it wants, sensing that you are in a weakened state. At times like this realize the dog is not being "bad" but just being a dog and if you find it hard to handle put the dog away for the time being, to his crate for instance, rather than lashing out and loosing more control yourself.
I'm rather light on the spectrum, I'm 19 now and was diagnosed when I was 18, along with anxiety (which I'd say is what I mainly struggle with) and attention deficit. The anxiety wasn't really a surprise because, as my mom says, I was born worried, but the ASD and ADD was kinda weird getting the diagnosis, though in retrospect, it actually did make sense. There are certain things I've always struggled with. I can say with a good deal of confidence that I honestly don't know if I'd still be around if it weren't for animals. I'm a massive cat person, my Pen baby just came to sit on my lap right now. ;w;
Hi Branwen, I feel the same way, I have anxiety disorder which in the past has kept me from participating in life sometimes. This led to feeling depressed at times. But whenever I got to feeling so low that I didn't want to be around anymore, I always thought of the upset to my shy cat of him going to a new home, and I was , fortunately in a mindset where i could put him first, and luckily bring myself out of the depressed feeling and move on. so he saved my life, really. This is in no way intended with any insensitivity to people with severe depression who need other help to bring them out of really bad mind space, just sharing my personal experience and how much the love of a pet means to me.
also want to add that I have had treatment for my anxiety disorder at St. Joseph's Anxiety Treatment Centre, Hamilton, Ontario, with great success. Group therapy where all of us shared our challenges and triumphs, tried new challenges, and were shown new ways of thinking. Example is when we were were 'Catastrophizing possible outcomes', which is common with anxiety disorders, and looking back afterwards to see that nothing bad actually happened in the challenge, so learned that just because I was fearing the worst, it didn't turn out that way. Reality was much better than the fear of what might happen. That is just one example of ways anxiety treatment may help, there are many others, can comment back to me if interested in others.
They are free in Canada through certain charitable organizations we work with like Dog Guides Canada, C.O.P.E. and NSD. You apply on their websites but there are long waiting lists which is why we donate when we can. In other places the costs vary.
No disrespect to these dogs but why don't you train dogs from shelters instead of breeding MORE dogs? I understand a special disposition is needed but, other agencies do. Shelter dogs should have a chance (just sayin') whoever 'coined' the phrase...Man's Best Friend, was right about that, they truly are. WoOf
+juls robertson Late response, but it's because a special disposition is needed. The large majority of shelter dogs come from abused/neglected situations, they tend to have behavior issues that wont allow them to be assistance jobs. These dogs are also raised from a young age to be assistance dogs, shelter dogs tend to be older and have less useful life-spans. Saying that, EVERYONE should be getting a shelter dog when they adopt a family pet. Breeding is bad 95% of the time. This is the one situation(perhaps police/military dogs) where you would require specifically bred dogs for a task.
Shelter dogs are great as companions.... but even just because of their time in the shelter, many are unsuitable for the rigorous requirements of a service dog. Service dogs need absolute focus, unshakable calm, and the temperament to be constantly on the job. I do believe that adopting from shelters is important and wonderful, but do remember that they're trying to perfect and refine certain personality traits to continually improve the dogs they train for people. Shelter dogs just have too many unknowns to be safe for service dog roles.
My son has autism and I have hit a wall in NC finding a service dog! My son is a runner and I desperately want to find him a service dog. So far all r out of state. Due to health problems I can not travel out of state and stay the time to get this done. Also they r saying it cost up to $10,000 to get a service dog and we can not afford that! If anyone out there can help please let me know!!
In Ontario we have several organizations that provide them for free but the waiting lists are long. I am not sure in NC but will check around. Maybe ask in some of the autism support groups.
Chester is a beauty. I feel calmer just looking at him.💗

So true!
exactly! unconditional love at it's greatest expression! reminds me of a old quote from marilyn monroe " dogs never bite me, people do!"...
I was terminally ill and needed bowl surgery, my cat did the exact same thing. She never slept in my bed under her own will before, but she could just tell i was very sick, and kept my feet warm and gave me some company to pet.

dogs were put on earth to assist and take care of their humans and they do a wonderful job of it
Awwwwwwwwwwww Thank you so much for sharing 😊🐺❤️❣
My beautiful little Bichon called “ Flame “ and I can communicate without speaking. He is so loved and appreciated💚
This is an awesome story! Glad these dogs are helping people who need it.

i need a severs dog for my anxiety
how can i get a service dog
every child should have a dog, its just the way it should be.
Shelters are full of furry, faithful, loving pups that would gladly take the job. :)
I have autism and I get sad and angery all the time. So perhaps having dogs living with me might just make me feel alot better.

Alpha Wolf My German shepherd has a few wolf-like characteristics. She likes to eat a lot of meat, and she can howl when she hears music.
Ryan Roach shepherds and huskies are extremely protective breeds

What a great video it is so heaert warming.
Great video. I'm working on a video on this subject and this was a great springboard.
Try working on it from the Rescue point of view, instead of buying dogs from a breeder; training dogs rescued from shelters. :)
Max and Chester are cute :)

Louise marie Brown there's service cats for autism in Canada
These cats are task trained like dogs to help autistic children the organization is called fondation espoir aux pattes Ottawa
i hope they dont forget to pay attention to the dog and play with it...Hes not there for a one way communication. Love and attention is so important for a dog too
Love this video!
My dog could easily be a service dog she is very calm never barks never bites is always very layed back
I had autism, but never knew it. I always had cats. I also wanted a horse at 3. My mother said, 'Where will we keep him?" Me: "In my room." Mom: "What will we feed him?" ME: "Feed him meat." I didn't get a horse, until I made enough money to buy one. But had them for years. Horses work good too.
Yes they work very well for some people. I am so glad you got yours.
never underestimate the power of pets.....
With proper training, man could become dog's best friend
Nice job :) I am adult with Asperagers!!
Thank you!
Michele Manly Cats are also able to be good assistance animals 😍
I lost mg poodle this year and it hurts
I am so sorry for your loss. It is so hard to lose a pet. Maybe thinking of all the joy your poodle brought will help and now they are running free.
Good Job. So Wonderful
Thanks! Such a wonderful stories- dogs are the best. XS
Talent Hounds Yes dogs are the best

my son have autistic ptsd and we have a lad mix with boxer that help my son we have less hit and out break from my son the dog slepp with hem
Iv learned that cause one I have it and my little cousin has it to
Wow, amazing one!
Great video.....
awwww
I'm rather light on the spectrum, I'm 19 now and was diagnosed when I was 18, along with anxiety (which I'd say is what I mainly struggle with) and attention deficit. The anxiety wasn't really a surprise because, as my mom says, I was born worried, but the ASD and ADD was kinda weird getting the diagnosis, though in retrospect, it actually did make sense. There are certain things I've always struggled with.
I can say with a good deal of confidence that I honestly don't know if I'd still be around if it weren't for animals. I'm a massive cat person, my Pen baby just came to sit on my lap right now. ;w;
So glad we all have animals. They help us so much.
This is in no way intended with any insensitivity to people with severe depression who need other help to bring them out of really bad mind space,
just sharing my personal experience and how much the love of a pet means to me.
also want to add that I have had treatment for my anxiety disorder at St.
Dogs are God's gift of intelligence to the human race. I wouldn't feel complete if they weren't in my life.
aww
Dogs rule.
What about a service dog for epileptic people?
omg I
my dog doesn't like me she ignores me the entire time and doesn't want to cuddle at all :(
poppunk sorry about that can you train her some perhaps she had a bad human in her life maybe she has to learn HOW to love you just saying ya know?
How much do they cost?I have a sister with autism.Oh and is there a phone number i can call?Or a website?THANKS!!!
They are free in Canada through certain charitable organizations we work with like Dog Guides Canada, C.O.P.E. and NSD. You apply on their websites but there are long waiting lists which is why we donate when we can. In other places the costs vary.
i just cried like a little bitch and I'm not afraid to say so
I cried like a little girl to real men cry
How much for one of these dogs
Dog spelled backwards is God..enough said :)
Really? I feel like such a statement raises more questions than answers.
:D
An agnostic dyslexic insomniac stays up all night and wonders if there really is a dog.
Partly for exactly the reason you mention but also because you never know what has happened to a rescue dog. Service dogs need to be predictable.
I'm so glad you have a dog- aren't they the best!
You can enter our casting contest if you want to share your story on our site . X TH
You don’t need a dog for autism rabbit are a great emotional pet as well
My son has autism and I have hit a wall in NC finding a service dog!
Let's not humanize dogs, they don't want us to do that. It's an animal and it's driven by instincts. That's great enough. Respect the dog.
at my local shelter there is a dog I really want his name is Pepe (yeah like the frog)
were you able to save him or did they kill him???
my puppy looks just like chester!
