Hi Ancient History student here! This is the history behind the comic book- The Persians were seeking revenge for their defeat under their previous king when they had tried to invade Greece. The Persians aren't attacking the Spartans alone, they are trying to conquer the many individual states in the area now known as Greece. An allied group of Greek forces fought at Thermopylae until they were betrayed and then the 300 stayed to give the rest of the force time to hotfoot it over to Salamis to join up with the combined Greek navy.
Vanity Fair had an expert-react video where a professor of mythology reacts to films and this was one, and it’s brilliant. He identifies all the accuracies and inaccuracies with the portrayal of Spartans, including that they were openly bisexual and didn’t have an issue with that, and his biggest issue with the film was the racist portrayal of Xerxes and the Persians. Highly recommend watching that. All in all, super inaccurate body of film with accurate bones. I think a guilty pleasure if a pleasure because of how problematic it is, namely the racism that is accurate to Frank Miller’s comic but not to the culture of the time.

It's one of the most misunderstood movies of all time and it yells so much about the male gaze discourse and women as objects in visual media, disguised as a corny movie -- which corniness speaks as a commentary in itself. Please get Kelsey and Eugene to talk about it, I'm excited!

Im late but i think Zach missed the point that it was a story, war propaganda, being TOLD by a real guy, Dilios, the guy who lost his eye, to help get people to decide to fight. It was exaggerated and a tale based on what he really saw, designed to ge people riled. The narration is there because this whole time hes been telling the tale to the senate and to the other troops before they go to fight. Its said that man was treated like shit for not dying in battle with his king, despite Leonidas making him return to tell the tale. He re earned respect in the following battle, its said he was a "tornado of death". This movie is actually a great representation of persuasive story telling that actually happened long ago, and actually the Spartans and Greece did hold off the Persians after rallying in Leonidas honor, i believe.
WOW,I just re-watched '300' three days ago, what a coincidence! This movie was super epic to me as a kid, but some lines are hilariously corny when revisited. Thanks for another fun episode, much love, stay safe
So Spartans weren't a warrior class of all Greece. Sparta was a Greek city-state (like Athens), but their whole society was built on being warriors, whereas Athens was built on democracy and intellect (part of why they were kind of diametrically opposed a lot of the time).

Ancient Greeks didn’t kill the babies they thought were weak, this is what was thought to have happened for a long time though. In actuality skeletons of months old babies who would have taken 24 hour care to surive have been found disproving this idea. The story about Spartans judging the babies is likely just a myth but, a lot about Spartan culture for a long time surported this idea. For example wives being able to sleep with men who are not there husbands if they think these other men will produce a stronger child.
While this movie is a guilty pleasure for me…the Spartans had the Helots so there is a kettle calling the pot black situation there. Movie still is fun.
Zach has mentioned that he gets his fun facts from imdb so it was probably this one: Some weapons used in the film are actually weapons from previous war epics like Alexander (2004) and Troy (2004). They were "recycled" to cut costs.

Spartan woman also had more rights than in any other Greek city state. They were also more educated.
