    Great Tips, it goes to show some of the best gear can be simple items. I have to say I learned something on this one. Thanks for your great videos.

    I went out and spent a night outside with a pine bough sleeping pad and a garbage bag sleeping bag. It was cold but totally worth it because i learned the limits of garbage bags

    I drove tractor trailers cross country for nearly 30 years. an old man told me about the "poncho" idea. I also found out that besides keeping your jacket dry, it made a great windbreaker (although it was a little noisy during the howling winds of Wyoming winters).

    Nice video. From experience, I say put that garbage bag INSIDE the sleeping bag stuff sack, compress the air out, then twist the bag and tuck it in, before closing the stuff sack. And, if you look closely at how a tent floor wears out, it's mostly from abrasion of the fabric from inside the tent. So you are better off with the trash bag IN your tent, on the floor.

    I've already heard of using the bag as a sleeping pad, and I used it last year around this time. It works amazingly. Just make sure all the leaves are dry (if possible) and pack the bag as full as you can because it will compress quite a bit once you lay on it.

    Good video. They also make a great flotation device as JIM FOSTER said below. Put your pack inside and blow it up with air and she will easily float your pack and you across the Mississippi river. I also filled zip lock bags with air and put them in my cargo pants leg pockets and that helps a lot as well in a river crossing. Several small zip lock bags in your shirt and pockets will really help float you across almost any river.

    Good job Chris. Don't forget that trash bags are also good for hauling out camp trash as well. :)

    I have always used them for liners inside my pack. Roll up my sleeping pad, insert vertically into my empty pack and allow to unroll, forming or reinforcing the outside wall of the pack. Insert the empty bag and load it, then firmly squeeze the air out, twist the excess, close the flap and forget. It will stay dry in all but a swim. 1/2 hitch for the swim.

    Great tips and I would be remissed if I didn't mention the obvious use of a garbage bag. It's always good to have an extra one of these handy in a pack. They've come in handy for me on every outing.
    Take care brother!

    Never thought of the shower one!! Years ago when they still made potato sacks out of Hessian two of those were the best thing to fill with leaves for a sleep mat (much quieter), they probably had just about as many potential uses as the trash bags!!

    I was watching your video on cooking bacon and eggs in a paper bag . While I was hiking the Appalachian Trail , I saw a hiker , throw large a pack of on unopen bacon on the camp fire . Then after fully cooked , he cracked eggs and cooked them on the bacon .every one just ate the bacon and eggs out of the camp fire :)

    Garbage bags saved me and my friends from us and our gear getting soaked when it decided to pour down raining while on the trail, we managed to make it to a small covered bridge mostly dry and were able to hang out there until the rain passed. Without those bags though it would've been a rough hike to the bridge.

      @IntenseAngler  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad that you were able to make it to some shelter. Times like that while on the trail sure do make the trips more memorable, eh? Not so much fun at the time though... ;)

    • @amandaggogo
      @amandaggogo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      We had more fun then most would, though we were also headed out of camp, so we had the luxury of dry clothes and a shower afterwards hahaha, it rained while we camped too, but it magically held off until we had a fire and a meal and camp set up.

    When you don’t have a blanket but have a trash bag. Lol. You can put your lower half of your body into the trash bag. Your head and neck stay out and you do up the draw strings. I’m going on a camp this week with my class at school and I’m definitely taking at least a whole roll

    A T Bag (lol) can used for cordage too...
    Can also make a tote kind of bag. Take about 4 1incn loops to make a handle for something fast or take more off the opening to make it even stronger ( smaller) bag

    John, I subscribe to STP also and agree that Chris and his production crew do a great job and STP has some outstanding gear. One thing I did notice is I believe he's using the larger 30 gallon lawn and leaf bags vs the smaller trash bags. Don

    • @SierraOfficial
      @SierraOfficial 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Don, I was using the 55 gallon contractor grade trash bags. The larger bags give you more options, but there needs to be a balance. The larger the bag, the more cumbersome it can be to use it when washing clothes or wrapping small items like your sleeping bag. - Chris
