    I'm totally blown away at the sheer volume of review videos this guy has made. I had no idea there was so many different kinds of fruit in the world. Like back when he found the ice cream bean fruit... he came across three very different versions of it in South America. My mind is blown... I guess all these different exotic fruits don't travel well to the supermarket or across the country to US supermarkets.

    • @MeliponiculturaenCostaRica
      @MeliponiculturaenCostaRica 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      And those are only 3, icecreambean has many more types in all tropical america, some grown for sale and many just tiny in forest trees some people know, but indeed, so much diversity, it is amazing

    Ok, so a giant passion fruit that has some lychee taste in it. Not only does it have more to it but it has the added flavor of one of my favorite fruits. This fruit is definitely on my bucket list now. 🤤

    Eat the rind/flesh. If it's ripe it will be very sweet, juicy and taste similar to honeydew with other melon overtones. They are very good.

    • @appa609
      @appa609 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is this related to those melons? It just occurred to me that most melons have a similar slimy seed structure.
      I guess closest relation is being rosids

    The rind is edible and is comparable to melon both nutritionally and flavor wise. I tried growing these but my sprouts all died due to inattention. I grow another kind and a chocolate fruit vine. Akebia something, they're similar to passion fruit, but supposed to taste like milk chocolate inside. They haven't set fruit yet.

    • @WeirdExplorer
      @WeirdExplorer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I've been wanting to try Akebia, hope it grows well for you

    • @peachypeach
      @peachypeach 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha actually the "Chocolate" refers to the smell of the flowers. I was semi disappointed when I found that out. I stir-fried the rind of the Akebia, as suggested by some websites. It turned out tasting more bitter than asian bitter melon dishes you'd get. If you do give it a go be prepared for that.

    • @kb4499
      @kb4499 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      peachypeach, I do love bitter melon stir fried with pork and black bean sauce, I make it now and then. It's unfortunate the fruit is not advertised properly. I was hoping it would fruit this year but it didn't, maybe next year.
      What does it actually taste like inside?

    • @peachypeach
      @peachypeach 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      haha the taste is quite forgettable. Texture of a mushy pear? taste very bland melon, and some aromatic smells. It's interesting. Maybe I didn't leave it to brown fully/ripen more?
      The method to eat it is interesting, best captured by this description, "You really had to work it once you put it in your mouth. Using your teeth as a makeshift baleen-ish filter doesn't really work. So you essentially sit there with your mouth full of seeds sucking away,..."
      enfu.com/blog/2009/1/9/exotic-japanese-fruit-akebi.html
      The seeds are 'edible' (the woman who sold it to me claims its diuretic and claims some benefits). I didn't bother eating the seeds. They are not brittle and easily broken like passion fruit. The seeds are more like small longan stones.
      www.eattheweeds.com/chocolate-vine-akebi/

    • @kb4499
      @kb4499 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      peachypeach, that was an excellent description. Thank you... Did it actually make you pee? The hard seeds doesn't sound too appealing. I hope to have my own fruit soon too, I'll probably post a video. Maybe invite fruit explorer by to try it.

    My mother grew a Granadilla vine when I was a kid growing up in North Queensland Australia (tropics). We ate it all the time - including the surrounding flesh that was like a honeydew melon. Great with banana strawberries and other tropical fruits! We also used the old dried (hollow) vine stalks to dip into soapy water and blow bubbles when we played outside. My mother needed to grow this on a trellis and the big fruit would pop down from the mesh and hang around until it was ripe. It was a beautiful sunny fruit!

    Gotta go to Colombia some day now, so many cool fruits!
    when there is an "ll" in a Spanish word, it's often pronounced like a y as in yard.

    • @TheRealFlenuan
      @TheRealFlenuan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, however English is pretty inconsistent in its pronunciation of it in words borrowed from Spanish. For example "armadillo", "Amarillo", "chinchilla", "vanilla", "sasaparilla", "manilla", "flotilla" and "guerilla" all have their "ll" pronounced as L. Usually these are words that entered English at an earlier time period, when the Spanish spoken by most Spaniards still pronounced "ll" more like a type of "l"-but in some cases it's just random or from English speakers pronouncing it like the written word looks without knowing the Spanish pronunciation. Nonetheless they're standard English words and pronouncing them with a Y sound would be incorrect. I'm just saying this to point out that the English pronunciation of Spanish "ll" isn't always by default a "y"; it randomly depends on the word.

      when I had one it was slightly under ripe, so the arils were more tart and classically passionfruity. To me the flesh tasted like a mildly sweet melon with hints of passionfruit.
      Of course with tropical fruit many have as much variation in taste between varieties as apples or grapes! So even if you have tried it once, try it again!

    I have a suggestion that may not make sense, but there's tons of different varieties of apples out there and some completely take over their market. Here in NZ galas are basically impossible to find as they've all been replaced by Royal galas. tons of different varieties of apples, and I think you should try some weirder ones if you can track them down.
