    Give into the low impulse control Matt when it comes to acquiring books! Embrace it 😆! We all do! Great video, and I am so humbled by your kind words. Thank you so much! Right back at you! I look forward to learning from sage veterans like you as I make my foray into the Booktube world, in time. Hope you enjoy all your new reads including A Drowned Kingdom!

      It’ll probably take a couple months, but I’m looking forward to A Drowned Kingdom! Also looking forward to see what you do on Booktube. 😀 Welcome!

      It was a great job, and Peter was more a friend than a boss, really. 😉

    Hello! Thank you for your kind words; I hope you are well, too. I'm also a fellow book addict, and I love the way you talk about your books and book buying with pride. I'm into hardback books, children's literature, and illustrated editions. Last month (actually, July 2023), the heftiest item I bought was The Lord of The Rings boxset (illustrated by Alan Lee), among other items such as The Complete Tales of Peter Rabbit Slip Case Edition, The Katie Morag Treasury, The Little House on the Prairie 6 Classic Illustrated Tales, etc. Those books ignite my imagination and give me a sense of joy whenever I look at them. :)

      Thanks for YOUR kind words, Ha. 🙂 Sounds like you’d enjoy my video on my Lord of the Rings editions. Look it up and let me know what you think, and enjoy!

      @@MattonBooks I actually found out about your channel through your Lord of the Rings collection video while contemplating which version to collect. It was the first video I’ve watched from your channel and after that, I subscribed :D I am still on the fence about buying that big red leather-bound version though… it’s so beautiful, yet so expensive. Haha.

      @@nguyenthithuha2411 Honestly, that red edition is also more a collector thing than a reading thing. Those huuuge all in one editions aren’t very practical, but they are pretty. 😍

    Hello, my name is Angela and I am a bookaholic. 😂
    I actually have three pre-orders due out this week. I got Phillip's The Way of Edan from Amazon yesterday. Then the two books I pre-ordered from Barnes and Noble have shipped and should be here in a few days.

    😂 “A complete idiot with no self-control.” I wave back, called out! 🤪It is definitely not under control at this end. Lately I’ve been going through e-receipts and stuff trying to map out my shelving habits, so I can graphically visualise how things have fluctuated over the years - you know how much I like my data 🤓 - and I know that 2022 was exceptionally naughty. 2023 is already heading heavily in that direction - though to be fair, 2023 has also seen me ‘gap filling’ as I have better catalogued my library and found gaping holes in it. But yeah, I’ve got chuff all of this ‘self control’ of which you speak 😉

    • @MattonBooks
      @MattonBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I’ve only vaguely heard about that mythical personality quality. 😜

    @jeroenadmiraal8714 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh yeah let me tell you about my low impulse control. First of all, I ordered the box set of the Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind manga by Miyazaki. Secondly, I am expanding my black spine penguin classics with some 19th century novels. And third, I managed to track down a copy from the UK of the fantasy parody titled Gentleman Into Goose.

    I read quite a lot in kindle and it is a problem!!, if I listen to somebody speaking about a book and I look it up in the kindle shop, the probability that I click "buying" before I realize I am doing it is of 99.9% 😂

    • @MattonBooks
      @MattonBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      I know that feeling rather well, Alma. 😬

  • @paulleverton9569
    @paulleverton9569 ปีที่แล้ว

    "I hate dust jackets". ARE YOU INSANE?
    The lengths I go to to protect the dust jackets of my most prized books is disproportionate.
    When I read new hardbacks I remove the dust jacket then replace it with a blank dust jacket, just to protect the book as I read it.
    I once dumped a girlfriend for using one of my books as a beer mat. She thought I was joking. I wasn't.

    • @MattonBooks
      @MattonBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah Paul, we’re different. 😜 I treat my books well, especially my nicer editions, but I also use them (to read) and don’t mind if they look like they’ve been read.

    This book haul rocks! IT! I have 5-6 of those Penguin Clothbound Classics and am collecting those, too. Some of the spines are not clear because of the coloring, but they look cool together because of the different colors of each book. I'm hoping to end up with a full row at some point. I'm looking forward to your Calvino review - I read it years ago, loved it, but don't remember much besides enjoying it.

    • @MattonBooks
      @MattonBooks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same with me on Calvino. Blew my mind decades ago, and am very curious to see what I think now. 🙂

    This month I have finished «Gurzil» by I, Anonymous (Self-Pub inspired by Arthurian Myth with Biblical and Historical elements), «The Way of Edan» by Philip Chase (Loved the many nods to real life history and myths, Tolkien, Le Guin, Robert Jordan, Lloyd Alexander etc.: The Wizard Galdor in ElLond=Galdor, member of ElRond’s Council as representative of the Grey Havens: I see what the Good Professor did there😉! Orvandil in King Earconwald’s hall “Sigseld”: Beowulf in King Hrothgar’s Hall “Heorot”. Chase mentioning “Beowulf”: “I’m shocked, shocked I tell you!» 😂
    A failed redheaded Kingkiller? A subtle nod to Rothfuss and Sanderson? 🤔And I loved the nods to "Beowulf", the tale of Kullervo from the "Kalevala" and Wagner's "Ring Cycle" about the heroes Seigfried and Brunhilde, in the in-universe story of Wilfar and Aelfscyn!), «The Farthest Shore» by Ursula Le Guin (Book 3# in the «Earthsea» series, I was inspired to read it after finishing «Way of Edan» this week and «In the Grip of the Minotaur» last month) and «The Years» by Annie Ernaux (A paragraph-mosaic book of the Nobel Prize Winner’s memories from the 1940’s to the 2000’s, with personal experiences mixed with her experience of larger cultural and political events).
    I just received the historical fiction book "Boudica: Dreaming the Eagle" by Manda Scott, as well as Kat Parker’s “The Silence of the Girls” (A mythological retelling of the Trojan War from the Women of Troy’s perspective) and “The Restless Republic: Britain without a Crown” (a non-fiction history book about Oliver Cromwell’s Commonwealth of Britain during the 17th Century, and as a big fan of the 1970 movie "Cromwell", I had to have it!).

    Book addiction here too 😅 I have that edition of Earthsea and would love to get Borges’ Fictions. As for me, I got The Mountain in the Sea by Nayler, The Space Between Us by Johnstone, In Ascension by MacInnes, Newitz’s Terraformers, Have His Carcase by Sayers, One Dark Window by Gillig, and Furies (short stories antho for the 50years of Virago) 😊

    I've ordered P.L.'s book, and need to get going on that series. Gorgeous edition of Earthsea. I haven't read much King lately, but I read a dozen or more from the late 70s through the turn of the century. I did, however, recently run into him, on the streets of Manhattan. "I'm a big fan," I stammered, much to the amusement of companions. "Are you?" they asked once we were in the pub we were on our way to. "I think 'On Writing' is one of the best books for aspiring writers," I replied defensively. I guess I was a little starstruck. Another element in my defense: we had just run into David Sedaris, not 15 minutes earlier.
    Such a weird day--sorry to get sidetracked. Nice haul!

    I bought a bunch of Dresden files books, Legend by David Gemmell and I think that’s that when it comes to physical editions BUT I bought a bunch on kindle…When I find a good deal or hear about a book I will likely enjoy I usually get it on kindle so I don’t have to face my addiction every time I look at my bookshelf 😅

    • @MattonBooks
      @MattonBooks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hah! 😆 That’s a good trick. I’m in a very print phase, so I’m filling my shelves. But I had a kindle phase for years, and bought so many books and so often, I forgot more than once that I owned a particular book.

    Penguin clothbounds are cheap trash that they charge almost $30. Glue-bound spine, no smyth sewn. Too tight, cracks easy. Foil will flake off if you actually read. Only use is looking pretty on a shelf. Buy Everyman's Library for an actually good reading copy with better paper, font, binding. Doesn't look as pretty.

    I've heard so much about Borges and have been so curious about this author for some time! Your Earthsea edition is stunning ! That's the best-looking one I've seen, and I'm going to have to hunt that down. Great haul! 🤩

    I vowed to start using the library more often so as to put a stop to the stream of amazon trucks showing up at my house. Of course, that doesn't work when people like Philip, Thiago, PL, and Vaughn keep putting out great self-published stuff😀

    • @MattonBooks
      @MattonBooks  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can (theoretically) say I have an excuse for not taking advantage of libraries. I can read German, but don’t enjoy it much for fiction, and German libraries tend not to have a great selection in English. And I’m a little in love with physical books at the moment, so 🤷🏻‍♂️
