They are called Perceptual Learning Modules (PLM’s), and there is no greater way to add the science of learning to your VFR and IFR training. Your ability to quickly interpret and act on instrument readings is paramount to your success in the cockpit.

Great video. It worked out well that you took the time to explain the first one. Made it easier to scan faster in the clips afterwards

    100% for this VFR-only pilot!
I now have more confidence that I may actually be able to do the Instrument Rating.

5/7 but HOLY SMOKES! Three seconds go by quickly! This was an excellent video, and I'll be sure to regulate my scans to more quickly and thoroughly gather the info presented to me from the panel.

7 for 7! But I have been studying a lot. Additionally Im hangered in KLNA and studying with a CFII pilot that came down just before Trump TFR and just left today!
I actually started training with a CFII at KFXE. Then on our second lesson he had to cancel with a fever and I haven’t heard from him since! So I start with a new CFII at KLNA on Monday!

got them all easy, first instrument to look at is the VSI, second inst is the turn coordinator, that tells you all you need to know right there, then with any time thats left look at the heading indicator and attitude ind just to verify.

  • @padrelaw

Although I got them all, it was the altimeter movement which helped ID the descents and climbs; some of them had the plane right on the horizon, not really above or below.

  • @hansfm2032

Great video! Although you are a master of explaining in all of your videos, the interactivity of this specific one makes for an enormously more effective learning experience. And it makes it way more fun too! Following up on Jack's comment: It would be great to have a video of this style, digging deeper into recognizing the nature of failures of instruments or systems, or to take it even further: cross checking your own observations and actions.

8 for 8! I just completed by first 2 under the hood flights! It is like work!
First day not bad but I had something happen that my instructor had never had happen. When I came out from under the hood, I had trouble judging distance. I recovered but not until we were actually on the ground. I think it was because as a bifocal glasses wearer I was switching from one part of the lens to the other and this tired my eyes. Have you ever heard or seen this?
Yesterday I used the hood instead of the ones that attach to glasses. I did not notice it as much. Interesting!
I am going to check out your ground school and just might do yours along with Jepessen. I enjoyed this video and think it would be a plus to do this after how far behind the airplane I was yesterday. It amazed me how quickly you can get behind the airplane and how hard it is to get caught back up!

What a great tool. I got them all but discovered I need more work with determining exactly what failed in the conflicts and what instruments were correct and which ones were incorrect, Cross reference and logical thinking will be much harder when in actual conditions. This is a great tool to practice those things while safely on the ground. Thanks Jason.

    Great Vid!!
Have to say, I got them all, up until the last 2... sigh..
Makes me realize, that I need to work on scanning. When it got down to 3 seconds, I got them wrong. I'm VFR so it's not so critical.
I also know, that in clear skies, VFR that's not a big deal to miss it in 3 seconds, but if you happen to go VFR to IMC (without IFR Rating) that could be deadly.
Great video showing that no matter what, you need to be able to scan quickly, and know your orientation, or if there are issues.
    Feeling humbled...
    Love it!
