- India, a land steeped in tradition and spirituality, witnesses a spectacular celebration every year: Durga Pujo. This ancient festival, particularly vibrant in Kolkata, the cultural capital of West Bengal, is a testament to the unwavering faith and fervor of its people.
Durga Pujo commemorates the homecoming of Goddess Durga, a powerful deity who descends from the heavens to vanquish evil forces. This multi-day celebration is a visual spectacle, featuring intricate idol creations, vibrant decorations, and a joyous atmosphere.
Kolkata transforms into a festive wonderland during Durga Pujo, with thousands of marquees adorned with colorful lights and traditional motifs. The city's streets come alive with the sounds of music, dance, and cultural performances.
Beyond the religious significance, Durga Pujo is a significant economic event. The festival generates billions of dollars in revenue through tourism, handicrafts, and food sales. It's a testament to the enduring power of tradition and the cultural richness of India.
Experience the magic of Durga Puja in Kolkata and witness a celebration that's both awe-inspiring and deeply meaningful.
A Deeper Dive into Durga Pujo
The Origin Story: The legend of Durga Pujo traces back to ancient Hindu mythology. It is believed that the goddess descended to Earth to combat the demon Mahishasura, who had become a formidable threat to the world. Durga, with her divine powers, vanquished the demon, restoring peace and harmony.
The Significance of the Idols: The idols of Durga Pujo are meticulously crafted by skilled artisans. The most common depiction features the goddess riding a lion, holding a trident, a lotus, a conch shell, and a sword. The other deities associated with Durga, including Ganesha, Kartikkeya, Lakshmi, and Saraswati, are also honored during the festival.
The Cultural Significance: Durga Pujo is more than just a religious celebration; it's a cultural phenomenon. The festival brings people together from all walks of life, fostering a sense of community and belonging. It's a time for family reunions, social gatherings, and the exchange of gifts.
The Culinary Delights: Durga Pujo is synonymous with delicious food. Bengalis, known for their love of cuisine, prepare a variety of traditional dishes during the festival. From the savory flavors of fish curries to the sweet indulgence of rasgulla, there's something to satisfy every palate.
The Economic Impact: Durga Pujo is a major economic driver for Kolkata and West Bengal. The festival attracts thousands of tourists, boosting the hospitality industry. Additionally, the demand for handicrafts, decorations, and food items creates numerous employment opportunities.
The Future of Durga Pujo: As India continues to evolve, Durga Puja remains a cherished tradition. While the festival may adapt to modern times, its essence remains unchanged. It's a celebration of faith, culture, and the enduring spirit of the people.

Bengal is not only the sweetest part of India,it is also the greatest part of India......
Yes Without jobs . Lakshmi left Bengal long ago
@@cmukherjee6692 What Bengal thinks today India thinks tomorrow 🙏
Omg delulu spotted
But it is temporarily destroyed by the follower of SS Roy, the devil Mamta Begum.
In Bengal, we believe the goddess to be our daughter. She comes to her paternal house with her two daughters and two sons along with their 'Bahon's. She is more of a daughter to us than a deity or a goddess. Hence there is this pompous celebration and no fasting.

Exactly
Who said Laxmi and Saraswati are her daughters😂😂😂??? Ma has only one daughter, her name is Ashoksundari... You are so proud of Bengal's Durga Puja but dont know how Laxmi and Saraswati related to Ma Durga!!!
@@pappuchak8605 Even how many Indians know about Mrinmoyee Temple ,Location :- Bishnupur, Bankura, West Bengal, I don't know. Mrinmoyee durga idol was built in 997 AD during the rule of Malla King Jagat Malla. I think First Durga Puja in West Bengal is Mrinmoyee Durga of Bishnupur, Bankura, West Bengal. Even so called Durga Puja of Kolkata was not started in that period.
@@itss.b.5391 First Durga puja of Bengal was started by King Laxman Sen in 8th century I guess... Goddess Durga's worship is happening since time unknown. May be 10000 years but no one noted in written form untill 8th century. I guess Durga puja is happening since time unknown..
This is what Bengal waits for year . This video is very emotional for Bengali😭😭❤️❤️
It's really nice and comprehensive, encompassing almost ALL, at least as much as I am aware of, being myself a Bengali. The overall structure of the video, the chronology, and the pretty correct commentary from Devdutt Sahab is also awesome. I must mention that your inclusion of Kumari Pujo was in fact really sweet for me personally as I belong to Ramakrishna mission and kind of its culture, and also it depicts the thorough research done towards this documentary. I agree with everything spoken about PUJO starting from the Devi Durga being treated as a daughter coming back home, to the art exhibition, and the whole city coming to life. The Chakshudaan, the drawing of the third eye was really nicely explained. Although on the day of Mahalaya, sons whose father has left the life, go to tarpan, preferably on the bank of the Ganges or any holy place. Tarpan can be performed at any holy time or so, but it is thought so that tarpan on Mahalaya dawn is ultra special and Holy. This can be added as well, a very tiny one though. Although a couple of more things can be added.1 thing that was missed - Sandhi Pujo - which is the conjuncture of Ashtami and Navami - I guess believed to be the time when Maa finally defeated the demon. The Aratis of Bengali tradition are probably a little bit different and Sandhi Pujo arati is the best and one of the most intense of its kind. So, ya it could/should have been added. Secondly, just a suggestion, the whole thing could have been ended with our iconic phrase of "Aschhe bochhor abar hobe" - which literally means 'ane wala saal firse hoga' - 'it will happen again the next year' - a ray of hope to overcome the cloud of sorrow, after SHE leaves for her heavenly abode.
Indeed it's a yearly visit of a daughter to her parents' house, her own childhood home, along with her own kids. That's how SHE is to us.
Thanks for this video. Now I can simply show this documentary to anyone wanting to know about Durga Pujo concisely yet comprehensively.

The days we spent in Durga Puja is something you can't forgot your whole life
Working hard all the year we all came together for some days forgetting all the things we enjoy some time with our family friends and relatives
Maa knows everything that's why the time she comes she brings only happiness and joy with her
Durga Puja is not just a pooja it is an emotion which is unexplainable
Joi maa durga
Now it is more spacial in this year.... After recognising Kolkata's Durga Pujo... By UNESCO 😘
In Bihar the Durga maa is considered as the daughter of the house and she is coming to her parents' house, once the matripaksha is announced, we stop doing things which might excite her but start making everything she loves on the day when she arrives.
Yes, bro, in Bengal too it is the same.
Jai Maa Durga. I was supposed to travel to India on 2020 but the pandemic set us back. Soon i will be there and celebrate with my friend who lives in Kolkota. Thanks for such a Great Video.
Excellent narration by the host ( couldn't find who it is, hat's off), very well researched, crisp, enriched by expert comments of Mr.Patnaaik. Overall ratings, 11 out of 10 !

Beautifully depicted video on Durga Puja 🙏
Ofcourse he is an Odia.
A very crisp narration of a festival that has unfathomable splendor. Much respect to the narrator & the team who put together this exhibition.
Having said that, this is just a little factual correction that I'd like to offer. According to shakti worship tradition, the "navapatrika" or the 'kola bou' as referred to here in this video, Is a representation of 9 forms of Shakti (prakriti), by 9 plants - bramhani(represented by banana plant) kaushiki(represented by jayanti plant), kaali(taro plant), Chamunda(arum), durga(turmeric), Lakshmi(paddy/rice), raktadantika(pomegranate), shivaa(wood apple/ bael) & shokarahita(Ashoka tree). These nine twigs are tied together, draped in a saree, bathed in holy Ganga & kept on the right side of the deity in the temple. As Mr Pattnaik has aptly mentioned, it is the worship of nature as Devi, or shakambhari rupa of durga. Essentially, navapatrika has nothing to do with Ganesha & is not His wife! (Ganesha has two wives wriddhi & Siddhi,in mythology)
As we believe Ganesha as the son of Shiva & shakti, navapatrika is actually His mother. As observed in traditions of eastern Bengal (nowadays Bangladesh), Karthika and Ganesha swap sides in the idol. Since Karthik is on right side there, the navapatrika is placed beside Him.
It is a request to the creators of this video to please incorporate this change if possible. Thank you. Jai maa Durga 🙏🏻
Very well explained
I am proud to being a bengali ❤
Excellent video of what is Durga Pujo about…

So beautifully narrated.
Awasome.....nice description with nice voice...best documentery about durgapuja......may I ask who is the narrator...????
Please stop associating durgo pujo only with Bengal. It is widely celebrated by all bengalis not only in India but across the world. To associate it with only Bengal, is an insult to the bengalis living outside Bengal.
Jai Ma Durga Durgotinashini 🙏 🙏🙏
Jai Maa Durga🙏🙏🚩🚩
Aladai❤️😌
Durga Ma ki Jai !
Kolabow(banana tree with 8 plants)/Nabapatrika is not wife of Ganesh kalabow herself is Durga please correct
Excellent presentation.
🙏🌼Joy Durga Maa🌼🙏
There are certain problems in the explanation of Kolabou (translating as "banana wife")... Eg.: Kolabou is the colloquial/rustic name for Navapatrika ("nine leaves" or "nine plants").
Also, I found the voice-over part of Kumari puja as inappropriate. Worship of Kumari (unmarried, pre-adolescent girls) is an age old tradition and is practiced almost throughout the Hindu community in some form or the other. While not stated in so many words, the voiceover seemed to suggest that Kumari puja was something that Vivekananda began as a tradition.
Navapatrika not symbol lord Ganesha wife it symbol maa durga nava (9)rupa .
Joi maa Dugga
navapatrika is a representation of the 9 forms of durga not ,the wife of ganesha. dont spread wrong information, thats a misconception

Great vedio
The 12 who disliked this are Mahishasur and all the other Asurs, Rakshash, and Danavs.
No. Navapatrika is not the wife of Ganesha. She is ma durga herself 🙂.
navapatrika is not lord ganeshas wife it represents the 9 roops of devi durga and lord ganesh's wifes are riddhi & siddhi he was cursed by devi tulsi i know all this as in my place durga pujo is celebrated for over centuries
After watching this, I realized that Devdutt Pattnaik doesn't know much about durga puja...🤧
It's a beautiful documentary.
But marred at the end by clippings of the mad CM who has literally brought Bengal to it's knees,, killed the economy, and driven every Bengali worth the name out of the state..
Would have shared the video with those interested, but will not because of the clippings of this foul woman..
Why Kolkata? Do you know about Mrinmoyee Temple?

Pandal Hopping or Pujo Parikrama.
Kolabou is not the wife of Ganesha. She is depicted as ma durga herself as a living entity. Since in previous days, there used to be "akchelar thakur" ( which is ma durga along with other gods in a single frame), kolabou was placed beside Ganesha. And from there came a tradition of placing kolabou beside Ganesha.
This much is known to me! Please don't debate over this!
Subho bijoya! 🙏
That is not Ganesh's wife don't share wrong information on public platform

The amount of misinformation given in this video is remarkable. Starting with Kolabou as Ganesha’s wife.
Harvest requires violence? What is he on about?
Why are you saying truth as story....
It is not story it is katha
To much wrong information
Kolabou isn't ganesh wife, iye ma Durga ke or ek rup.
Nope it definitely is Ganesh's wife. That's literally why she's kept beside ganesh's idol
@@sambitparida4370 dont spread wrong information, she may be called kolabou but the real name is navapatrika, represention the nine forms of durga,
FYI the wife is always sitted to the left of husband hence called bamangi, but navapatrika is sitted to the right of ganesha so she is not his wife
@@sambitparida4370 no...its is another form of mother durga..that's y we kept her left side of the ganesh..not in the right side..
