    Man, making your own bits and bobs...that's really neat. :D Y'all are expanding what you can do pretty handily, huh? Would love to see more of y'alls homebrew stuff. Easily my favorite part of the channel. :3

    For anyone looking to get into 3D modelling specifically for 3D printing I highly recommend the channel Artisans of Vaul.
    The problem is that a lot of 3D modelling guides are for videogames which has different requirements than 3D printing.
    Edit: as Dave says at 14:22 is a key example of the differences between 3D designing for 3D Printing and 3D designing for Videogames. For videogames nearly everything has to be made out of quads since most game engines don't like Ngons and it will cause problems in the rendering stage. For 3D printing however, Ngons aren't a major issue, the file is going to be broken down into triangles anyway when you convert it to STLs.
    The main thing to look out for when 3D printing is something you don't care about for videogame assets, which is making the object manifold (aka a sealed object with no holes in the mesh), an object MUST be Manifold otherwise it can cause major issues in the printing stage (and I do mean major, it might not just a failed print but it can lead to bits breaking off and piercing the FEP which holds your resin and thus leaks all over the machine...which is hell to repair and you're better off just buying a new printer if the resin got inside the machine).
    The other problem is intersecting faces, however it's only flickering intersecting faces (ones where you move the camera in blender and they flicker) that are really an issue.
    The other thing you'll see a lot of Hard Surface 3D modellers do is bevel the fuck out of everything to give it definition...do not bevel everything when 3D printing, the reason 3D asset makers do this is to make it look more 'real'...which you don't need to do because you're object is already going to be real because it's 3D printed instead use bevels where you want to exaggerate this.
    Also 3D builder is a free piece of 3D modelling software that Microsoft made that can repair a LOT of the issues you find so once you've fixed all the major issues (making the object manifold and flickering intersecting faces), take your STL, put it into 3D Builder and it'll fix the remaining issues.

      Thanks for the channel suggestion, went and bookmarked it for future reference. I've wanted to dip my toes into both modding and 3D printing for a while, so it's useful to know the differences in methodology.

    Now we just need Jenn's SoBs and Murray's 'nid bits! maybe we can finally get Shrike winged warriors.
    Awesome video, gang! Was a fun way to spend a Sat evening.
    Also, congrats on the 250K!

    im new to 40k but your channel and this project really got me excited to start my journey.
    on a side note, katanas have the blade facing upward when sheathed. what you model is more of a tachi. the design is still top notch!

    • @TabletopTime
      @TabletopTime  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fun fact I learned while researching for this video - katanas were worn both blade up and blade down, depending on the era and the dress, so both can be accurate

  • @theticksquad8218

    Something i think should be addressed in lore is why they're standing on natural bases. Because they live on an orbital platform of some sort i think their bases are synthesized, kind of like a museum diorama with simulated weather, so the T'au soldiers feel more like they live somewhere other than the desolate void of space.

    Really cool designs..cant help but think the shoulderpads should overlap the other way around. Top overlapping lower. So that strikes slide off. Would make more sense. Also, all katanas were worn curve down even with armour. It was loose so it could be twisted when drawn.

    Incredible work once again, I love the unique Japanese take on the tau. I suppose the advice I could give is the fire blade has the ethereal caste symbol on his armour; though apart from this everything was perfect.

    I‘m sorry to ask so fast, but can you make the shorter swords Held in hand, and I want to create a leader, that has two of them. Also, because I want to make it a kill team with house rules, that will be used with into the dark terrain, I would really like some custom ranged weapons, with maybe some tags from the shoulder pads on them too. Maybe a small rifle, and a shotgun?

    I would have liked it more if the blade edge would be facing upwards when held, like Samurai used to wear them. But overall this looks amazing !!

    • @TabletopTime
      @TabletopTime  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Samurai actually wore them both ways, but typically when in armor, the blade was angled the way I have modeled it. I did some research. We are used to seeing them the other way around from old samurai movies, where they were in kimono or Yukata, and the swords were worn the other way around. All to do with the era, fashion and also the ergonomics of drawing a blade in armor vs out.

    Another great vid from the team! I think using the same scan tech from the cinematics vid to help with scaling would be a great addition to your workflow. That way you could scale everything up for modelling, and then scale it down before exporting for print. Congratulations on the 250K, very well deserved!

    Models are great, bits are nice and paint jobs great... I was totally with you until you started putting 'rising sun' motifs to your work. The Rising Sun, to many, represents
    Japan's imperialist expansionism during ww2 and hobby wise, is up there with 'almost swastikas' being put on imperial guard.

    big tip for future bits creation.
    there are many bits creators the have cheap or free bits for models. to create your own you can use them as base for reference.
    i also created my own soulderpads for tau and I started by importing a free shoulderpad from someone else. that way I will know they are the right scale and helps invision how they will look.

  • @PariahRonin
    @PariahRonin ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a thought - maybe for the wish tags - you should print them separately and have them to be able to attach like purity seals.
    In some of the arm positions it almost feels like they are defying gravity.

  • @yikeswazowski9838
    @yikeswazowski9838 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think it would be better to have the flags be sakuras rather than the rising sun. Feels like im looking at the eastern version of when certain painters paint certain symbols symbols on their death korp or space marines if you know what I mean
