Peter, Paul & Mary - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 31 ก.ค. 2011
  • "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who was later to become his wife. At the time the couple were lovers, although MacColl was married to someone else.

MacColl wrote the song for Seeger, also a folk singer, after she asked him to pen a song for a play she was in. MacColl wrote the song and taught it to Seeger over the phone. The alternative version of the creation of this song is that MacColl was challenged by a friend to write a love song, with no politics. This song was the result.

Apparently there are 1.3K people whom are either deaf, don't appreciate amazing voices, or are jealous! I loved Peter, Paul, and Mary. They take me back to the better, more innocent days, of America... when music touched your soul.

There is no way to count the numbers of people who were born without a sense of great music. Those are the ones who think getting stoned and vomiting at Kiss concerts is the way to go

That song, always, makes me cry as that was, exactly, how I felt the first time I met my husband to be. My roommate insisted I meet her fiance's best buddy who had just arrived back from two years in Australia having been playing there & just returned to the states. I fought tooth & nail with my roommate that I did not do blind dates, but, when I met him the 1st time & saw his smile, I knew he was the one. I told him I was going to marry him on our 3rd date, I think. We married, many happy years together & he died 7 yrs. ago & I miss him, terribly. This song is the most beautiful song I have ever heard & does, indeed, stir up those wonderful memories.

And I'm so sorry that you lost your husband -- it can be such a tough journey, and hopefully those wonderful memories of your life keep a glow in your heart now. The song just takes my breath away. This version and Roberta Flack's version are amazing and they conjure up so many intense feelings and memories.

In 1966 I was 15 years old and working as an usher at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City Mo. Peter Paul and Mary were playing a concert and my best friend and I were asked to take soft drinks to their dressing room before the show. When we entered the room to set the tray of drinks down PP&M were playing & singing a song, I assume they were warming up before the performance. Mary was sitting facing the door. She looked at me and smiled. What a beautiful lady she was!

Mary Travers wasn't the lead singer. She was an add-on brought in to broaden the duo's appeal. She was brought in at first mainly for her appearance.

The first time ever I saw your face
I thought the sun rose in your eyes
And the moon and stars were the gifts you gave
To the dark and the empty skies my love
To the dark and the empty skies
The first time ever I kissed your mouth
I felt the earth move in my hand
Like the trembling heart of a captive bird
That was there at my command my love
That was there at my command
The first time ever I held you near
And felt your heartbeat close to mine
I thought our joy would fill the world
And would last till the end of time my love
And would last till the end of time

When this song came out on a PP & M album, my friend and I "back engineered" it and deduced all the guitar chords and the actual guitar parts and then wrote down the harmonies for each voice for the three verses. When it came to actually doing the song it was so beautiful and emotional I would often get a lump in my throat singing the words. I still have all that in my archives and I still love this song. Such a sensitive rendition.
