I've just started mandolin. Learning scales and chords and toughening my fingers. I'll be back when I get further along. What you've shown here was very clear and I am sure it will be helpful later on!
Let me just say that this is one of the best instrument tutorials I’ve ever seen. I also play the guitar as well as the mandolin, and I’ve seen many lessons. Few are as clear, to the point, and easy to understand as this. Brilliant job.
Been listening to the O'brother sound track since it first came out and I'll fly away has always been my favourite. Just got a Mandolin (following years of guitar) and this was the first song I searched to play. Thank you soooo much!! This is great 👍
John, you may the best at instruction AND video. So great to see pick angle along with explanation. Can’t wait to spend some time with this. Thank you so much.
Good stuff John, was looking for something with open strings, love this song so easy to learn, really nice simple arrangement for newbie to sound great, your 'big stupid fingers' not in the way and play lovely too, many thanks from france
THIS IS GREAT! I am a new mandolin player and it is a bit of a mystery to me. I love that I can replay this over and over until I get it. My private lessons are wonderful (my teacher is helping me on rhythm) - this adds so much to all I am learning. You are a wonderful, patient teacher and this video has opened my eyes to the secret sound of the mandolin. I hope this isn't asking too much, but may I request a Jolene tutorial, please?
Hey John! I am back in the saddle with mando :) revisiting this and wondering what lovely lilting strum pattern you’re using at the beginning? My version sounds much more disjointed. Thanks and hope you are doing well!!
That is super cool! Wow, I would love to have a mandolin like that. 101 years old, I'm hoping it's from your family. I made a mandolin and it sounds really great, I'm hoping one day my family will treasure it as much as I do. Thanks for the video, I will be learning this.
Respected sir i wants to know that the tunning procedure of the each strings means which string tuned in which note... Before start the lessons i fully confused because in india different type of tunnings are there. So pls it willbe helpfull to primary Lerners thanks with solute
Thank you, thank you! That was so helpful! Any chance you can walk us through Nina Gerber's mandolin part to the live version of Kate Wolf's Across the Great Divide?
Have probably watched this video 50 times so far (first song I'm learning on mandolin I recently acquired). So helpful and well explained. Is there a tab or some other written/drawn version of this rendition somewhere that we can look at when we can't watch the video?
@@jcurtis30water Joining Sara here! I bought the O' brother where art thou sheet music book, but it's rendition isn't very good in my opinion. Hoping for a tab of yours :)
This arrangement is in D, so I’m playing the melody and using open strings to provide harmony. I don’t really play any full chords just the melody notes and open strings.
John Curtis It has a great sound, very recognizable. It’s so much like mine, it’s uncanny. I have a Gibson A from 1922, paddlehead with a truss rod. I’m very fond of the little thing.
I appreciate how you break it down, repeat, build, and show the different viewing angles. Thanks!
Glad to help, enjoy.

Where can I get the Tab sheet music?
There are probably many versions out there. I’m working on a tab of my version for this. When it’s done , it will be $5.
Thanks for tuning in!
You gave .me hope your good at teaching.. I don't know shit, but now it sure sounds like I do.lol. thanks.
Hey Pablo, I didn’t know sh*t when I started either!
Do you have tabs?
Rough ones. Working on a proper one. Should be done soon.

Working on it. So many songs, so little time 😉
Trying to learn this song. Thanks for posting. What kind of mandolin is that? It sounds amazing!!
Thanks, it’s a 1921 Gibson A model
Would you teach it G? The group I play with does it in G. Thanks I like your teaching style.
Ok, I’ll try to get to it before the holidays.

Hi Sara, Sorry, no tab of this yet, at least from me. I’ll be sure to post a notice when I get it done. I should do it, as it is popular.

Are you just open strumming the rest of the chords while simultaneously playing the melody?

Interesting mandoline by the way. Is that one from the 1910s?
