Retro Studios hasn’t released a new game since 2014. We think we know why!

  • In early 2019 Nintendo shocked the world when they announced that were scrapping Metroid Prime 4 and starting over from scratch. Sweetening the blow to Metroid fans, however, was the surprise news that the game would now be developed by Retro Studios in Austin, Texas….the same legendary Nintendo subsidiary that created the original Metroid Prime series in the first place.
    However, Retro Studios isn’t the same place it was in 2002. The devs who created Metroid Prime are all long gone from the studio. Many aren’t even working in the videogame industry any more, its been so long. Yet, Retro is determined. They have moved to a bigger office space and they are on a hiring blitz, sucking up top industry talent everywhere they can. But some of us are still concerned.
    Most concerning is the fact that Retro Studios hasn’t put put a genuinely brand new game since 2014’s Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze…..its been almost 7 years! What has the studio been up to in the meantime? Where are the games that should have come out of this lost time period? What happened? And will this have any bearing upon the prospects for Metroid Prime 4’s success?
    In this video we explore the news and rumors surrounding Retro Studios’s mysterious recent past, and we develop a hypothesis of our own. Perhaps Retro Studios’s greatest strength is their unique and tight knit relationship with Nintendo of Japan and the Japanese management of the company….but is it possible that such a situation is also Retro’s greatest weakness? We think that it is. Good leadership and rational guidelines are essential for the productivity of any company, but this might be a case of “too much of a good thing”.
    As always, thank you very much for watching, and please subscribe in order to support our channel. We really appreciate all your support!

    Some great insights and hypothesis here, thanks for the coverage. I do have to give you a bit of flak regarding the bug eyes bit, since it didn't include the full explanation. Mike Wikan did say that after much thinking they came around to Miyamoto's idea of changing Samus' perspective of how she sees the world, rather than literally changing her head. It's minor but pretty emblematic of the cultural differences Retro had to navigate. Walker seems to really have been a key ingredient in what made the studio so industrious. Can't wait to see how MP4 turns out.

      Brian Walker has that sharp, hard working focus that I think creatives need. I’ve seen it happen in animation studios as well. Creatives are, obviously, very good at creating but they lack in terms of self-organization, motivation, and consistency. A good manager like Brian Walker can help build the bridge between the guys who make art and the guys driven to produce a completed project. I think he was vital.
      At the same time, it seems like Retro’s turned the corner. I think MP4 is probably going to be yet another masterpiece!

    just discovered you, and this great video!
    im sure this won't be noticed, since so much time has passed, I'd like to add a thought if I may:
    All your poking fun at the toys in the offices goes against what John Cleese says, that any true creativity must involve play. You must be at ease, and in a playful state of mind to create something that is also fun.
    great video!

    • @creativecatproductions
      @creativecatproductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see how how that work philosophy seems to make sense….about a playful state of mind producing something fun or innovative, and I find it to be fascinatingly pervasive across the American tech industry….which is admittedly innovative overall. I don’t know where this attitude started but it seems to me that Atari in the late 70s and early 80s was a prime example if not the origin point. At Atari personal work expectations were curbed, people did drugs, wore their hair all crazy, walked around barefoot, pursued their own interests or way of doing things….it was basically a hippy boomer reaction to the stiff white shirt and tie work experience of the military-industrial generation that preceded them. I remember all the dot-com start ups in the late 90s and how their offices were rife Nerf gun battles, bean bag chairs, arcade cabinets, and ice cream buffets and stuff like that. I think it was a continuation of that anti-work, pro-playfulness spirit that had become so pervasive in Silicon Valley. From what I gather Retro Studios was participating in that same legacy, at least through the development of Metroid Prime Trilogy. It kind of looks awesome, and I can see how it makes work seem less oppressive, but I also think all that personal expression and free play have to be a major distraction, and I wonder if this American approach to game development is the reason our developers also complain so much about “crunch”? When a big project has a strict deadline, and yet the office is a big playroom, it seems like there are going to be consequences……CRUNCH. Every second spent playing with Nerf guns, or making mint juleps, need to be made up eventually…..and it seems like they wind up doing it all in a few weeks or a couple of horrible months. This is how a lot of people do college: party, party, and then suddenly cram and endlessly study for a week of hell. I get the mentality, and it definitely seems fun, but maybe not when your making something that absolutely HAS to be done by a certain date. At least, at that point, fun time needs to be carefully scheduled.
      The other extreme is Japan. Watching documentaries about Nintendo in Japan from the 90s look to me like nothing is fun about their very sterile and rigid workplace. Other than the games themselves, which are meticulously and painstakingly made by scowling nerds.…not fun, but at the same time, incredibly well made and in a timely fashion. I’m not sure that extreme is desirable either, and I get the feeling that “crunch” is just how Japanese office workers operate most of the time, even without the fun work environments. But I think that’s changed a lot in recent years.
      Whatever the case may be it seems that for a time Retro found a compromise and made it work. They successfully balanced a fun work environment with productivity, and that’s quite an achievement. I think its very hard to do, but with the right kind of people, and the right kind of clear boundaries put in place, I think it can really work…..except that GI Joe aircraft carrier! That thing is just too big to be anywhere. It took up a whole conference room!
      Thank you very much for watching dude! 😎

    I'm surprised this video didn't mention the photo of an obscured character in Retro's thank you card to Reggie. From what we can tell it was a small robot and may have been related to the mystery game

    • @creativecatproductions
      @creativecatproductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I considered the photo but the video was getting super long and it was kind of a red herring during my research. Recently Reggies has claimed the photo pertains to a specific individual that worked at retro and that it was covered for the sake of privacy….I suspect it is a cartoon caricature of Bryan Walker, as a robot. Part insult, part compliment. Bryan Walker is a buff dude, he’s a rigid ex-military type….and he apparently left on bad terms. But I can’t prove anything and Reggie could be fibbing.
      To me it kind of looks like the Cave Story robot a bit. Maybe it was a robotic diddy Kong? 😂

    • @creativecatproductions
      @creativecatproductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s hard to say how far along development is at this point. Retro is a great company with a great track record but they are working with a completely new development team. It’s going to take a lot of extra resources to pick up the pieces and move forward. Im fairly certain this meant starting over with a new game engine. Im also fairly certain that they’re working on multiple games. I’m betting that they put out a 3D Donkey Kong platformer in the future, given the talent they’ve acquired in recent months.
      I don’t feel angry toward them in any way because of their difficult situation. I think they’re going to produce something for sure, and I think it’ll probably be good. But if its not, or if these games don’t do well, then Im not sure Retro has much of a future. At the same time, this is a company that seems to thrive on pulling off miracles in spite of bad press.

    Wow! That was very informative. I’m glad I stumbled upon this while looking for videos talking about Metroid Prime’s cut content, and why we’ve had radio silence. That is very interesting. Hopefully this video catches on.
    I played Recore and it wasn’t very good. Uninstalled the not very long into it. Thankfully O didn’t buy it because it was included with Gamepass.
    It would be great if a lot of the original people behind Metroid Prime were to get together and make their own IP that’s basically Metroid Prime with the serial numbers filed off. Too bad there’s also not any clones of the game (at least not that I’m aware of).
    I vaguely remember the rumors for Star Fox Grand Prix. It’s really funny how people were getting hyped up for a game that most likely didn’t even exist. The only hope for that existing would be if UndyingNephalim were to create it as part of his Star Fox game Star Fox Event Horizon. It’s a reimagining of the 64 continuity that uses characters and elements from all three timelines/reboots. It’s a mod for Freespace Open, which is an open source space combat game so it’s 100% free. It’s very impressive what he’s done. What’s just as impressive is the man got in contact with the lady who played Krystal and she’s going to do voice work for his mod. He also made this Zelda rts mod for 0ad called Hyrule Conquest. Originally it was a mod for Medieval 2 called Hyrule Total War, but he switched engines because the new one allowed for a lot of stuff that was previously impossible, and it’s also open source so different people can help with the base game’s code. You should really check him out. It’s super impressive what he’s made.
    There’s also this Adventures remake by Esphirian. So far there’s three trailers for it. I’ve talked with him in the comments and he has some interesting ideas for the story. It looks amazing!
    I personally wouldn’t put much credence to what Tyler McVicker says. The reason is because most of the time he’ll take small details and make wild speculations about them to hype up his audience. He got Alyx right because he had insider information, but has been wrong numerous times. Plus, there was that interview with the lead devs if Fallout Frontier. It’s so funny just how incompetent he was in that interview. He read every question, and I mean EVERY question. Even ones that were very obviously bait then would pause as if he was expecting the guy to give a serious answer. It’s so funny!
    The way the devs were completely screwed over by incompetent management can be said for so many other studios. The people in charge of 343 are running Halo into the ground, and have been since 4 (I liked 4 because of the great story, but the gameplay took the worst aspects of Reach and combined them with CoD elements that work great in CoD, but not in Halo. They also rushed it for the 360 when originally it was supposed to come out on the Xbox One which caused a lot of issues. It was only downhill since then). Studios under EA, Activision, Ubisoft, and numerous others experience something similar. Sega completely ruined any chances Sonic Boom had of being a good game because they kept making all kinds of nonsensical demands to BigRedButton.
    I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if the singing game was actually real because Miyamoto has had some absolutely atrocious ideas in the past. He’s had plenty of good innovative ideas, but numerous other atrocious ones. He’s the reason Dinosaur Planet became Star Fox Adventures (I really liked Adventures, but we really should have gotten Dinosaur Planet. Luckily I’m early 2021 the 64 build was leaked and the community has done a lot to fix it), he wanted the storybook in Mario Galaxy to be removed because he thought it was “needless story” which luckily didn’t happen, we would have gotten Twilight Princess 2 but got Link’s Crossbow Training, he wanted the Wii to be played with this bizarre circular controller that nobody developing the Wii liked, he and others are the reason Star Fox Zero has such horrible controls, and plenty of other things like that.
    Excellent video! I really enjoyed it.

      Its like they think it’s 1989 and that the only people in the world who know how to make a competent videogame are Japanese! I think guidelines and expectations are one thing, but they appear to provide almost daily input and constant redirection and that’s really hard to work under. @creativecatproductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it’s probably fine! But I also don’t think Nintendo of America is involved in creative game development the way Retro is. My understanding of Nintendo of America is that they are more or less a distributor and marketing firm….translating what Nintendo of Japan makes and selling the end result to our peculiar American big box store industry. Retro on the other hand is working directly with and under the supervision of Nintendo developers in Japan and it’s got to be a stifling situation for creators who are trying to make a game that not only works, and makes sense, but pleases all these competing interests at the same time. That would suck so bad. And this reality is born out in retros abysmally negative company reviews on glass door.
      I think Michael klebaugh is a really interesting guy….completely self made, hard working, and loyal to Nintendo to the end. But I think its also possible that his commitment to Nintendo may come at the expense of his team in Austin.

    Yeah, every failure when it comes to games is consistently and reliably a breakdown of communication. This video is a bit old, but Nintendo should relocate Retro Studios (if they haven’t already). City matters when it comes to what you want to do in the States. I don’t know about anywhere else, but over here, if you want to work in fashion and the arts you go to New York, for film and tech it’s California and so on. I’m looking forward to Metroid Prime 4, and I’m double dipping on Metroid Prime Remastered and I hope everyone at Nintendo is happy and healthy. The Switch is weird, but I keep falling in love with it, over and over. There’s something to be said about that!

    Could’ve got to the point quicker

    • @creativecatproductions
      @creativecatproductions  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Indeed, this one was long. It took us a long time to get to the point with this one because its a fairly complex story to unfold. We had to cover Retro’s unique history as a subsidiary of Nintendo, but we also had show the nature of the problem, which is hard to do without basically talking about every game the company has ever produced on a time line. Then we’re left to ponder why such a gap in production could have occurred? A large portion of our audience, which is mainly retro SEGA fans, probably didn’t even know that such a problem at Retro even existed! So we felt compelled to elaborate. Video length is tricky, our most successful videos tend to be long, and I personally prefer long form content, but some people prefer videos to be less than 10 minutes. Perhaps what we ought to do is create a cliff notes version alongside the full length version? But then we’d split our potential audience on a give topic, hurting the videos chance for success on TH-cam. It’s a tricky thing, but thanks for watching!

      I’m always really struck by how quiet and serious Nintendo of Japan in Kyoto seems. I’d guess that the makers of all those wacky, colorful games would be equally colorful and wacky but no! Nintendo of Japan looks like a contemporary art museum, is sterile, and even has rooms with formal tatami mats for things like tea ceremony. What a place! Michael Kelbaugh gives me weird vibes

    • @creativecatproductions
      @creativecatproductions  ปีที่แล้ว

      He comes off as really intense in those old interview clips, but I think the Metroid prime vibe they tried to give the footage sort of unintentionally made him look like a character in a horror movie. I’ve only ever heard good things about the man. There’s a story circulated by original Metroid Prime staff about how, after the original iteration of Retro imploded in the early 2000s, Kelbaugh was brought in by Nintendo during a time in which everyone was ready to quit. Kelbaugh asked for two weeks to make changes to encourage people to stay, and whatever he did, it worked. Mike Wikan tells a version of the story (though others have told it) in an interview he did with Kiwi Talkz. No one ever specifies EXACTLY what he did though…..which is both fascinating and a little disconcerting. 😆

    I found something interesting that there's a small group of people who are hyping up prime 4 Tend to have a dislike of monolith soft, a game studio that nintendo bought years ago who makes the xenoblade games but also works on games like splatoon, Animal crossing, and Zelda. You see they though that they retro wouldbe in MS place instead(they also made fun of nintendo for buying monolith soft back in the day). They are also part of the same group of people who want nintendo to go in the direction of playstation and move their game development primarily to the west so that nintendo would make games that look like God of War or horizon, and other games like that on a console as powerful as a playstation 5 or series x
