  • The Garden Of Celibidache (1996)
A film by Serge Ioan Celibidachi
    With English subtitles
    Description from www.celebfilms.co.uk/sergiu-ce...
An intimate portrait of the world famous and revered classical conductor and composer Sergiu Celibidache.
This ambitious cinema docu-drama follows the maestro through rehearsal with the Munich Philharmoniker and on tour. The film crew’s main objective was to recreate Celibidache’s universe on the widescreen and although he usually avoided publicity, he made himself extremely available for the film.
Indeed we were able to shoot over one hundred hours of Super 16mm film and record more than two hundred hours of digital stereo sound. The ambition of “Sergiu Celibidache’s Garden” had a simple but intimidating objective: to re-establish and celebrate the old love affair between cinema and classical music by presenting to the public a man that was simple as he was brilliant.
From the beginning “Sergiu Celibidache’s Garden” was planned in film terms by using simple and sophisticated shots, depending on the circumstances. We have a story: the story of a man who revolutionised the world of classical music.
A film on a man and his passion, a film on music and its extremes, a film on something that burns inside each one of us: “the spark of eternity”.

Just an ignorant would say "the best ever"...there are plenty of conductors who are very convincing in conducting Bruckner...some think that chelibidache is very slow and boring...i like his music making but i would not say " the best ever..."

in an interview in Romanian, the maestro explains that no one should be afraid of him because he is only the executor of Mozart's will and if there is a terrorist here, it is not him but Mozart because he composed such musical works. He knows just how they should be interpreted to sound as the great composer wanted. He needed a confirmation from the audience, not praise. A confirmation that he is impressed by a lady who used these words that impressed him. Nice words over the years from master Sergiu Celibidache................................................................................

Ok, he is a great musician and chef d'orchestre...But he is a terrible teacher...The descriptions, explanations, remarks he makes are incredibly philosophical, complex, complicated and diffıcult to digest. Watch the expressions on the faces and in the eyes of his poor students. I don't see any sign of mental internalisation or appreciation of what they hear...Only empty faces, similar to those of high school children listening to Einstein talking about his relativity theory.

Celibidache is a true master and pedagogue.
Every science of something is based on a philosophical view. It is true, phenomenology was not anymore in en vogue in 80s and 90s, but the way Celibidache applies and valorized it in music is the most clear and simple way possible, it is not at all an intellectual isolation of thought as you are seeing it.
His pedagogy is very hard to digest, but you know this is not because of his character, it is actually a prominent manifestation of the ontological goal: total engagement and participation of artist conductor and listeners. The conductor has to sacrifice his personality beyond any formalistic hedonism in order to gain the ultimate true of his structural ad spiritual experience. Also shocking reactions are a zen philosophy metod of engaging disciples, see the zen master’s katsu.

I think he's just given me a wonderful lesson, and his students, in the long run, probably will have so much more from him than from anyone else. Everyone teaches true to their spirit, he was on a very high level and wanted no less from his students, for good and bad. I believe that the one that could stick with him and take some less "pedagogic" words lightly will carry great wisdom after some time.
