  • There are two ways to Gybe an Asymmetrical Spinnaker (A-Sail), you can Gybe it on the outside or the inside of the sail. This video reviews the factors you should consider before selecting the one best suited for your boat and the conditions, it then takes you through the steps to ensure you complete the perfect A-Sail gybe.
Knowing when to complete an outside A-Sail Gybe is critical, if you try an inside A-Sail gybe when outside is better suited you will end up with a wrapped spinnaker which is hard to untangle and very slow while racing.
Once you know when to complete an Outside A-Sail gybe there a 3 key step which must be coordinated to complete the perfect Gybe. The skipper, mainsheet and spinnaker trimmers must work in unison to ensure the main is trimmed in while the boat completes its turn. This allows the A-Sail trimmer to ease the sheet which lets the spinnaker get in front of the boat allowing for a tangle free gybe that quick gets the spinnaker setting on the new Gybe.
Understanding the key step and their dependancies allows you you complete the perfect Outside A-Sail Gybe every time and in all conditions.
We hope you enjoyed the video and learnt something that you can put into play either in your racing or cruising.

Thanks so much for posting this. I sail double handed with my wife, so I showed her this video and she now knows how to gybe our asymmetrical. She thinks there shouldn't be a problem because she is used to doing all the jobs your half dozen crew members are doing in the video

So happy you found it valuable. I would suggest pulling main in first then move to the kite, if you steer a smooth path and time it right what could go wrong 😏

We gybe the boat inside every time as our skipper fears dropping one of the sheets down over the bowsprit and getting it caught up under the boat. Big problem for us as we use a continuous spin sheet. Pain in the butt raising the jib, and carrying the chute through every time. I never thought of having the bowman up from feeding the sheets across to insure the sheet does not drop over.

On the mumm 36 there was very little gap between the luff of the kite and the forest at really hard to go inside without getting it twisted.

Bit grainy but good info. It would be great to see one with outside gybe and spin pole choreography

We have some new cameras ready for next season the should allow me to zoom in at higher resolution. If I can get some footage we will create another one with the step you need to take with the pole. Thanks for stopping by and engaging 👍

Gennaker -> A-Sail - Asymmetrical Spinnaker are all interchangeable ways to describe spinnaker that are not symmetrical.
