I really do not like musicals. But, as a dedicated Trekkie, I committed to watching the entire episode 2-9. It all was okay. Until Uhura had her solo. GOD! What a wonderful 4 and a half minutes. The entire episode pales compared to what Celia Rose Gooding created. And, it all fit into the Star Trek universe. (She was awesome!!!!!)

Yeah, I try to remind the people who malded about this episode that Trek is all about being for everyone, and every now and then, that's not you. And that's OK.
You can't appeal to every person on Earth and also do things that any given individual will like and agree with, and that's the whole point of Star Trek. If the episode wasn't for you, it WAS for a lot of other people, and it'll "go back to normal" soon enough, so calm down.

I am a lifelong Trekkie, and I have a performing arts degree with a major in voice, so I was very excited for this episode. One of the downsides was the fact that most of the cast aren't singers. The music for those characters is fairly uninspiring and there is some obvious studio work on their voices (especially Anson Mount, even though I have a massive platonic crush on him from Hell on Wheels). However, Rebecca Romijn, Christina Chong and Celia Gooding all have good voices, and it was great to hear them spread their wings a bit.
Actually when I was listening to the start of this song, I was thinking "Oh God, here's another song where the range is really low and the music is not interesting at all." And then she opened up, and I just had one of those moments where you can't take your eyes off the screen and everything was perfect. Even though the other ladies did a good job, this is the musical highlight of the episode, and I have listened to it quite a few times since watching it.

@@kingtimot I think I can answer this. Nomad claimed Uhura's memory was gone, true. But we also saw that, in sick bay, she was speaking Swahili, a language that nobody re-taught her. Conclusion: her memories WEREN'T gone, and that was yet another mistake Nomad made. Writers didn't know how to speak fluent technobabble in the 60s, but if they did, there would have been some noise about neural pathways and memory engrams being re-established -- in other words, fixing or rebuilding the paths to her memories that were still all there.
Nomad, meanwhile, is that asshole who sits in his basement all day in front of the computer, claiming to be an expert on everything, harassing newbies in his favorite game, and making sleazy jokes then complaining that everyone's a feminazi without a sense of humor.

It's probably to call back to her connection to Hemmer as a mentor since grieving has been a large part of her arc and a focus in the song specifically.
I also think it's fitting that she sings it immediately after Spock's break-up/heart break song since he's dealing with a different type of loss
