NJPW today stand head and shoulders above every other promotion in the Land of the Rising Sun, but that wasn’t always the case. As for the later part of the 20th century they enjoyed a compelling rivalry with All Japan Pro Wrestling. From the Giant Baba vs. the world years, through the Tsuruta/Tenryu dynasties, to the hallowed Four Pillars of Heaven, AJPW became a by-word for incredible wrestling, fighting spirit, and the breath-taking (but highly hazardous) ‘King’s Road’ style.
