Very well illustrated, I can sympathize with the backbreaking job.

This was a terrific video. I am facing this exact issue in my lawn - but not just one rock, unfortunately. I bought a bunch of feather and wedges that look like toothpicks next to yours. And I've discoveredd my hammer drill is totally unsuitable for this work. I'm wondering if there's a reason to get such large feather and wedges and drill bit size? Also, could you say how long it took to drill each hole?
    Thanks.

Hi! Thank you for the comment😀 I use big wedges because you get a lot more force, and need fewer holes. It takes about 4-5minutes to drill the full length of the drill bit. This can vary a lot, depending on the hardness of the rock or bedrock you are drilling. It is hard work to split and move rocks by hand!!

Good instructions. Have you had any problems with the bit getting dull drilling rock?

Sometimes it can break of parts from the hardened steel at the drill bit tip. They last for a long time if you use it right. They do get dull as well, but some can be sharpened. They drill fine even dull. I know someone use running water too cool it down while drilling. I newer do that. I have several bits and change after a couple of holes to let it cool down naturally.

Great video! How do you know how big the hole needs to be for a given wedge size?

You just measure the wedge with a caliper!

Here in Norway it is a lot of stores that selling equipment for stone jobs. If you google wedge and feather in your location, I’m sure you will find it. You can buy cheap Chinese made or high quality like Atlas Copco (expensive). It is a lot of fun to work with stone and boulder removing! And it is the best workout as well!

You could have spit it in 4 with smaller holes and many small feather and plugs. 😊
