    This is so amazing. Last year I ended up working in my church's library where I was taught about the Dewey Decimal System and learned organization of the books (a crud ton of books). I didn't get why I was learning it until now but it's a skill I can now apply to my business. I never thought I'd be in the fashion business but this yet again proves that God has always been putting me in places to learn things about this business that I didn't even realize. This video was such a great help. Thank you.

    This was very informative on style numbers. Your examples about accessories made from leather helped to make things more clear and easier to understand.

    As I watch your videos I am amazed at the complexity of the industry. I either buy, copy or draft a pattern, and by drafting I don’t mean I use complex math, I just figure out what I need to do to make it work, and try to pay enough attention to cut right side up if I am using contrast, or have to cut single layer for whatever reason. I just never considered the level of precision necessary. Wow.

      This is why I roll my eyes at anyone who "kinda wants to start a fashion line". It's too ocmplicated for someone who doesn't really want it. I always tell them not to bother until their heart is in it.

    Love the video! I have a question- if you don't differentiate between prints and solids (same fabric quality), how does the style get priced? Since prints cost more (and maybe also have a higher perceived value), how could they have the same style number?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don't overthink it. Offer a price for the prints and another for solids. You have to write down the color being ordered on all order forms anyway. But the cutters can cut them together because the pattern pieces are the same.

    Hi Zoe. Thank you for this video. Should we mention the season and year in the style number too? If not, how do we track the season from just category, fabric and design? Also, should style numbers include if its in prints or solids? Thank you in advance for sharing your time and knowledge so generously.

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      >>Should we mention the season and year in the style number too?
      No, styles/patterns can re-used over and over and should. Why would you go to all the trouble of perfecting a pant fit to never use it again?
      >>If not, how do we track the season from just category, fabric and design?
      All info should be tracked by the tech pack.
      >>should style numbers include if its in prints or solids
      No, that doesn't affect the pattern or how it's sew.

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's nothing special about proto numbers. It's more important to track dates they come in and when changes get issued for the next sample.

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      >>is there a different style number regime for this?
      I wouldn't. I use the same number all throughout. Switching style numbers for production would just confuse everyone. Keep the same style number and label your samples by what they are (first sample, TOP, etc) and what date it was completed so you know what's the most recent sample.

    If I understand correctly, we create our own category numbers, fabrication numbers, and style variation numbers? The line I am developing for my client(patterns) has lots of blended fabrics with lycra so would you advise for example, cotton for one fabrication category and cotton lycra for another category? Thanks so much Zoe.

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, because patterns made for stretchy fabrics should be different than patterns made for non-stretch.

    Hi, If you have several colorways for the same style do they need to have separate style codes. i.e. white: 12001, Red: 12002.. ?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, because there's no change in the pattern.

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Style numbers are not SKUs. Style numbers are for patternmakers et al. SKUs are for inventory.

    Hi Zoe,
    First, I have learned so much from your videos so thank you!
    However, I have a question for this video-
    There are a million fabrics out there, if set out to assign a number to all it'll get crazy.
    How do you suggest to deal with that?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The style number is for the pattern only. You can cut a pattern in "a million fabrics" but if it's still the same pattern, it's the same style number. That's why you mark your fabrics, colors, and dates being used specifically on the tech pack. You would only have variations like #3411 and #3411A if the pattern was the same style but modified slightly to use a fabric different enough to alter the fit, like faux fur or a thick leather.

    This is exactly what I needed right now. Thank you Zoe as always!! :D
    Also, I have some question about the style number. If I want to category customers(Men, Women, boy & girl) & type of clothes what is the best way? I am just working on a girl's line, but I hope I can expand in the future. Is this can be too much to the buyer?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Something like all 4000s are pants, 4100s are girls woven pants, 4200s are girls knit pants, 4300s are boys woven pants, etc. Style numbers are helpful for buyers but they won't memorize how each designer organizes their numbers. The numbers are for your own business organization.

    Hi Zoe,
    thank you for doing these videos they are such an amazing help! you make things really easy to understand.
    I am working for a swimwear designer who is on her 9th collection and is now realizing she needs style numbers to keep track of sales in her own store and wholesales. I was wondering if each collection could start with 001. Example if there are 20 styles in the first collection I would end at 020 and be able to start from 001 again with another collection and have each collection start with 001?
    I hope this makes sense
    Thank you!

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Style numbers belong to the pattern. Let's say she has a bandeau bikini pattern in her first collection and the style number is 1234. If she uses the same exact unaltered pattern in another collection but with new colors, the style number is still 1234. If that 1234 bikini is popular enough to run again, it helps the factories (oh yeah, sew it just like the last 1234), it helps buyers (1234 sold so well last time, we're running it again in new colors), it helps organize your pattern inventory, etc. Never use the same number for 2 different patterns. Too confusing. That's why you note the season on every tech pack--can be an older pattern, new season, new fabric.

    Hi Zoe, please help! If I have model style # 1201 in black but then I have a version that requires a contrast piece replacing PART of one piece in the black style... would the second model be style # 1202 or #1201A? The black model (pattern) would say "cut 2" for that piece. The model with contrast (pattern) would say "cut 1 in black" + "cut 1 in contrast" for the same piece.
    I hope my explanation is not too muddy 😐 Thank you!

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I would do 1201A and make sure everything is labeled clearly. Make sure your pattern pieces are marked "RSU" for "right side up" as need. For example, if all your left sleeves would be cut 1 self and all your right sleeves are cut 1 contrast, then everything should be labeled RSU because they have to be specific right or left sleeves. You do not label "cut 1 black" --label the fabric choice not the color choice.

    • @zoehongteaches

      Pick the one you use more as the main fabric, as the "self" fabric and the other will be your "contrast" fabric.

    What is the difference between SKU and style #?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      SKU includes colorway in size. All colors and sizes of a style have the same style number. For example, SKU #123456 could be style #3456 in blue, size S, and SKU #123457 could be style #3456 in blue, size M, etc.
