Which means the people putting the money in now won't be able to use it when they go to retire

Social Security is a program that came out of the Great Depression in America. It’s money that disabled people, retired people, and idk who else can get when they need it (when they qualify for it). Basically we pay into it and until Regan took took much out, there was enough for everyone to eventually get some when they got old enough to qualify (as mainly old people get it)
4:00 social security is this weird thing where the government decides that you can’t be trusted with your own money and takes a small bit for a specific amount of time, usually until retirement. It was started during the Great Depression. Oh also the government will use YOUR money sometimes. In the USA sometimes means a lot.
3:00 Considering that "boomer" is an insult kids use to anyone older than them -- regardless of when the baby boom actually was -- this will take a long time, by which time today's millennials will have long since passed the age of the people they call boomers now.
Social security is basically a retirement insurance where you pay your entire adult life and then receive it when you’re old. Thing is, basically anyone under the age of 40 who has been paying it their whole life will never get it because the government is going to remove it.
6:52 Of course USA has high healthcare fees; general inefficiency, fear for getting inaffordable estimate/receipt, finally getting treatment when the cost is at its peak, and yet citizens get infuriated when the government try to get bigger for any reason.
Social Security: I live in Germany and unlike people in the United States, I am *not* constantly one disease, illness or accident away from bancruptcy. If, for example, my hands get damaged (I work as a plumber), all of my medical bills are paid for by taxes not significantly higher than yours and even if I can't work again the rest of my life, I can be assured to *never* live on the streets. Simply put, the government hands out money to those who aren't capable of earning it themselves (Injuries, disabilities, difficult job market, etc.). Not enough money to live comfortably but you get by with a roof over your head and a bed to sleep.

*Canada:* So we're gonna make you pay a small tax so you can get free healthcare when you need it. You won't have to wait long to see someone either. *USA:* You get to pay a large tax for healthcare, and you still get to pay several hundred (or thousand) dollars at the appointment. Also, wait time is horrendous if you don't have good insurance, and they might have to pay us too, even though you already pay them way too much.
4:13 Well, given that in a lot of countries the *government* has passed legislation making those _religious holidays_ into _statutory holidays_ (along with _non-religious holidays_ such as independence days, monarchs' birthdays, regional anniversary days, labour days, and other culturally appropriate days - like ANZAC Day and Waitangi Day here in New Zealand), then atheists, Christians, Muslims, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jews and any other religious persuasion *all* get to have the day off - in some cases, whether they want to or not. Some of these days are "Mondayized", which means that if the *religious* holiday falls on a weekend, the *statutory* holiday falls on the following Monday. This means that some years, atheists (and other non-Christians) *aren't* having Christmas day as a holiday, they're having the *following Monday* as a holiday. And as Jake says, it's a *day off* - unless you work in a place that actually *pays more* for working on statutory holidays, what's the point turning up to work when everyone else is taking the day off and having fun?
In short, people weren't making retirement funds for themselves. It was becoming a problem. Old people were becoming unable to work but unable to retire. So the people demanded the government make something to fix this. SSI/Social Security was one of the 2 main fixes, that I know of, that came from this. So basically it's a retirement plan for the unable to save for retirement. Back then, those elderly who couldn't work anymore, but lacked a savings for retirement, would often end up in care facilities. Sort of like old people homes, but government payed woooozzles amount of money to tend to the elderly's needs. So, in essence, saves the government money, tons of money. However, the interest from so many people paying into it was a ton. To the point it allowed people who can not work, some maybe born that way or maybe not, to be allowed some money from the same basic company to survive on. This was to help those who would otherwise be either homeless or in care facilities, that could sort of tend to themselves if given an income, and didn't need the 24/7 care, care homes provide. Basically, it's cheaper for the government to use the interest to pay people to stay out of sight, out of mind, than the government funded care facilities or clean up bodies regularly and hide the fact they weren't doing anything to fix the mess. Also, it's a statement that even 40, 80, 100 ect years ago, workers were often underpaid and unable to plan for their future very reliably.
Most countries in the industrialized world have some form of something like Social Security (although Social Security is the program that the US uses), while most every country that does have it does it differently, essentially speaking it is a social program that involves the government paying a monthly stipend to people who have reached an age where they can no longer work

You pay your taxes and social security is the money “you are entitled to” when you retire or go on disability. If you don’t have a retirement fund from work, its like a “built in” retirement fund. Theres also medicare/medicade, which is a form of national health care given to the elderly and disabled.
the best way to explain social security is that it is basically a national retirement fund. from the moment you start working until you are 62, a tiny percent of your paycheck goes into it, once you hit 62, you can start receiving the benifits of it, which is basically a 1500 to 3000 dollar monthly pay check for the rest of your life. (there are other benifits as well, but i'll get to that in a minute) Unfortunately, as pointed out, baby boomers changed a bunch of laws for a while that had to be changed back because they neerly destroyed it completely, if they hadn't, the age for social security benifits would be closer to 45-50 years old and the amount would be double of what it currently is. Also, as mentioned, there are supposed to be other benifits, but baby boomers did so much damage with the law changes and similar that they pretty much only exist on paper.

But the cancer that really worries me is the lot in her brain, unfortunately chemotherapy doesn't work up there only radiotherapy, and that only shrinks the cancer.
@@ChaotiX1 The taxpayers pay a tiny amount of money towards it (probably in the hundred's every year). In the US, it's $10,000 for proper treatment, and cough sweets cost as much as $10 each. What's more, the government pays far more in a privatised system than in a socialised system. In the US (as of 2016, it has most likely gone up since then) the government spends 9,892 international dollars per capita on healthcare. In New Zealand, where Jamie's mum is getting high-quality cancer treatment for free where she'd have to spend 4 months salary if she was American it's 3,590. Socialised healthcare is better in every single way imaginable, and that's the truth that your greedy politicians have been hiding from you for decades because they're corporate puppets. I studied climate science in chemical engineering graduate school as a specialist subject and something that almost never comes up in public debate is, if you take the global average temperature over the entire planet all that chaotic elements of weather cancel out and and reduce to a standard "radiating body problem". We can predict the global average temperature next week, next month, or 5 years from now with a grate degree of accuracy.
I had an atmospheric chemistry class where we where given a test question of: given a certain fixed amount of millions of metric tons of CO2 being dumped into the atmosphere calculate the global average temperature rise. We could because they taught use the formula and the theoretical basis of why was true.

Jake I'm assuming your British in which case our social security is called national insurance.
3:10 - to put it simply, social security is money that is taken out of your paycheck every month and is, in theory, put aside for you to use in the future when you retire. However, what is happeningis that there is not enough money in the social security vaults to pay for the social security of the people who are currently using it. which means of the social security money that is being put it now is instead of going to them to pay for theirs. Which means the people putting the money in now won't be able to use it when they go to retire
Lol yeah they have been saying that since I was a little kid and it's still going strong. When I was little adults said it would be gone by the 90s because that's what they heard. I can see it disappearing as so many people don't work anymore and live at home with their parents.

I love how Christmas isn’t even a Christian tradition and yet Christians claim that it’s “their” thing. It was originally a Pagan tradition named Yule.
Yep, and you know what else has Pagan origins but is unreasonably hated by most Christians? HALLOWEEN. And this is because some Christians are so hyperspiritual that they believe that on THAT day specifically, all the dark spirits are going to erupt out of Hell and possess your children(for context, the last church I ever went to, this one guy in particular loved talking about how Halloween is "The Devil's Holiday" and shouldn't be celebrated)

In the UK we have National Insurance, a tax on earnings and self-employed profits. National Insurance contributions are paid into a fund, from which state benefits are paid. This includes the state pension, statutory sick pay, maternity leave, entitlement to additional unemployment benefits, and the NHS.
Whats wrong with taxes? It’s more predictable and manageable than something coming up, like losing an arm or being fired.
Cool story. I actually have an IQ of 151. Here's two insights my "big brain" has achieved:
1) You can't get an IQ score from an internet test.
2) Literally no one cares about your IQ.

Social security is basically a retirement insurance where you pay your entire adult life and then receive it when you’re old. Thing is, basically anyone under the age of 40 who has been paying it their whole life will never get it because the government is going to remove it.

Social security is practically the same thing as the state pension in the UK

0:28 yeah,it’s 1.0715% tax is kinda expensive

3:24 fyi, boomers are the children of the Silent generation, the silents are the kids are of the Greatest generation...

“Outragious”
okay yeah but 7 news is one of the main news corperations in Australia
the best way to explain social security is that it is basically a national retirement fund. from the moment you start working until you are 62, a tiny percent of your paycheck goes into it, once you hit 62, you can start receiving the benifits of it, which is basically a 1500 to 3000 dollar monthly pay check for the rest of your life. (there are other benifits as well, but i'll get to that in a minute)
Unfortunately, as pointed out, baby boomers changed a bunch of laws for a while that had to be changed back because they neerly destroyed it completely, if they hadn't, the age for social security benifits would be closer to 45-50 years old and the amount would be double of what it currently is. Also, as mentioned, there are supposed to be other benifits, but baby boomers did so much damage with the law changes and similar that they pretty much only exist on paper.
