GREAT RACING!! Thank you for posting. I love this vintage stuff. Wish I could have been there but I wasn’t born yet till later the same year. Cheers to all racing fans, drivers, teams, racing families & all!!!
Look at all these legends of the auto racing world! Sport car driver, MacDonald...just what records that man might have set had he survived the 1964 Indy 500? I think, maybe, he could have ranked up with Mark Donahue and retire well.
Thanks for the video! We never got footage of this kind of racing in the Netherlands (was also only 2 years old). I know the track from online racing though. Tricky! The fact that McD knew the tyres would hold is amazing! Those drifts!!!
WildwoodClaire1 He would have had a great career. His driving reminds me of Keke Rosberg. In a Dirt Champ Car he would have been a natural. He was a Real Racer!
Davey cut his teeth in straight axle Corvettes, as well as an "Old Orange" modified put together by Max Balchowsky (of Ole' Yaller fame). Those torquish beasts had to be thrown through the turns to keep up with the de Dion and IRS Eurocarts. Dave never changed his style and was widely the subject of discussion among other drivers who could =not= understand how he broad-slid these mid-engined cars and got away with it driving- as well as tyre-wise.
The opening shots must be from early 1962 at the latest. It has Ron Flockhart in a grey shirt 0.03-0.05secs in. He died in 1962 in Australia preparing to race in his Mustang plane from Sydney to London.
It´s beyond me what MacDonald was thinking when he choose to ride this dangerous machine at the Indy 500. He was a great driver and would definitely got another shot at the race in a safer car.
Try a cross-reference of the race car numbers with the official race results that can be found on another website. You can Google 1962 Riverside times grand . . . or here is a link: www.racingsportscars.com/results/Riverside-1963-10-13.html
It was the style of the time. But give Wallen his due: Without him, we'd be piecing mid-century, West Coast racing together like a bunch of archeologists.
Bloqk-16 Chuck Parsons, shown in this race, was the last USRRC champion. That series ended and Can Am began. Great selection of drivers in this 63 event.
This is fifty years ago and I'll take this over any type of motor racing we have today.
These cars were All so good looking. It was a great era!!

I loved the pre-race pillow behind the back adjustment.

These cars were the basis of the slot cars I drove from 1965 to 1970. It's good to remember Dave MacDonald as more than just someone who died at Indy.
Love the 4 wheel drifts - great car control. always wondered why the King Cobra's didnt have roll over bars.
Wasn't required so they didn't have it. Not many other cars in the field have one either...
Wonderfully atmospheric video, thank you for uploading!
Watched many a race at Riverside up in the grand stands at turn 6. Racing at it's best!

Only if he walked away from that Mickey Thompson car at Indianapolis a year later, he would be alive today.
He had to know that thing was a death trap.
Americas greatest young driver Dave MacDonald. Gone too soon.
Dave could have been as legendary a champion as Johnny Rutherford or Bobby Unser, had his luck been better.
Love the look of those of those old race cars.

Love the buried tyres to stop drivers cutting the corners!

MacDonald.. The King of Over Steer

primus caligula Maybe Matt Damon will tell us in Ford vs Ferrari movie.
Worst casting, maybe in the history of casting. McConahey should have bee Shelby.
The Great Mac*****... i wonder how well pedro would have done in a K cobra
The car is currently in Pittsburgh
Wow!
Show!!!!
Sad these attributes never took hold in American cars...
Only thing missing.....BIG V8 sound 😢
Do they build kit cars of these
I think k found a new project
If anyone can tell me the names of the cars in this please do so.

Chapparal, type 61 Cooper Ford/ King Cobra, Scarab, Shelby Cobra.
Narrated by Stan Lee?
This video would have been great if it had original engine sounds, why the irritating music?

Crappy music is an old You-Tube tradition.
these old cameras didn't have sound tracking I don't think ,so sound would have been dubbed in anyway.
Yep 8mm & 16mm silent movies.
This kind of music was so "In" during the 60's. I know what you mean!👍🇺🇸👍
Hey, Mariska Hargitay's mom at :45...
was this a Can-Am race
This was the forerunner to Can-Am, which got its start in 1966.
Bloqk-16 Chuck Parsons, shown in this race, was the last USRRC champion. That series ended and Can Am began. Great selection of drivers in this 63 event.
Same MacDonald who crashed and died at Indy 64?
Yes.
