This rare audio is from the program held at Faisalabad at the barsi (death anniversary) of Fateh Ali Khan (father of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan) where all the famous singers of Pakistan were gathered to pay tribute. When Mehdi Hasan performed this self-composed ghazal, the audience was enchanted. Mehdi Hasan sang at the end of the program when all the singers had finished but it was as if no one had sung before him.

Perhaps, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saab was absolutely right in his assessment that no one else can ever compete with Mehdi Hassan Saab in so far as his control over Sur was concerned ! Here, in this ghazal. it was as if the great Mehdi Hassan Saab had infused life into the beautiful Labz of the great Ahmed Faraz Saab making it a masterpiece ! I salute the great Mehdi Hassan Saab for his exploits and superhuman qualities ! This is the absolute best version of this ghazal which one could hear only on Radio Pakistan .I have heard this version after 30 years and here, Mehdi Hassan is at his sublime best. In this version ,from start to finish,his total control over the raga and the dexterous use of different aspects of ghazal singing are at full display. Tari Khan's impeccable SANGAT is unmatched. Probably the best version of this ghazal by Khan sahib, you can listen 1000 times and still enjoy it without being bored. Mehdi H was THE greatest ghazal singer, he made the ghazal enjoyable for the common man yet he never dropped the quality of the raag the ghazal was composed in or sur/taal etc. I do not have knowledge enough and am not worthy to praise Khan sahib. I can only enjoy his music and I feel privileged to be able to enjoy his ghazals. Suman sahib you deserve a big applaud to share this kind of gems with others, thanks👏👏
