Good explanation Tom - this should help newer scrappers as they learn their way around our industry. Take a look at Benjamin's post about his yard taking Al heat sinks as cast. Could make for a good talking point on its own. Locally I have one yard that takes them (Al heat sinks from computers and electronics) as extruded and another that has a special category call Al Heat Sinks.

Hey iScrap app, Dirty aluminium was 0.07lb a few months ago when clean aluminum was 0.24lb. Now dirty aluminium is 0.11lb and I'm hoping for a similar increase in my clean aluminum. My question is why haven't I seen an increase in the price of aluminum cans? It's been a steady 0.60lb for about 6 months and hasn't increased the same as my other aluminium. Tks.

Don't mean to be critical, but cast aluminum is not a lower grade of aluminum. Extruded and cast aluminum are different alloys. I've built patterns for x-ray quality cast parts. Cast aluminum is used in the aircraft industry. Other than the alloy the only real difference is cast aluminum has no grain structure, it will break. Extruded aluminum in the process will align the structure or grain with the length of the extrusion. Just like the difference between cast steel and cold rolled steel. Look up both aluminum alloys you'll find that both Extruded and cast has similar requirements for various alloys. Both cast just as well but I need to deal with extrusion differently. Extrusion loses its hardness when cast, and that doesn't machine well. But there is a fix.

Aluminum extrusions tend to be sharper , shinier , and precisely fitted and shaped, whereas its Casted counterpart is for cheaper applications , and therefore imperfections in surface texture may be present
