I don't remember how I found this album (most likely while browsing at one of the five or six record stores that used to be in my city), but find it I did, and when I asked my mom to buy it for me for my upcoming birthday she flatly refused. I secretly asked my grandfather, who DID buy it for me. He didn't know who Venom were and didn't care. To him music was like literature; tastes varied among us. Anyway, I was blown away by this record, and spun it loudly whenever my parents were out of the house (quietly when they were home). The title track was on one side of the vinyl, and the other tracks were on the flip side. This epic 20 minute track became one of my favorite metal songs at the time, and even tho my original copy of the LP has long since vanished, I STILL listen to this now nostalgic piece of music 40 years later! In '84, my so-called metalhead buddies thought Metallica (who were still new at the time, having only "Kill 'em All" and "Ride the Lightning" so far) was TOO heavy, and they never wanted to hear Venom at all. Their loss. I'm 57 now, and listening to this on a rainy Sunday morning has me feeling 18 again. 😊
I remember when this was released back in the day and how everybody was freaking out about how this song took up all of Side 1 of the album! Damn near 20 minutes' worth of Venom stretching out and actually not doing half bad, all things considered. I actually kinda like this, these days, but still, give me Venom when they're at their fastest and most furious, their most chaotic and crazed most of the time.

I grew up on this, only now do I realise wow monumental is is, metaphorically. as a 13 year old, it was my fight against established religion and authority. As a 50 year old it paints a monumental epic of the good vs the damned. An eternal battle. I'm glad I have cancer. I wont have to see this out.

At 5:36, "Down with Heaven, You are Mine !". I always liked pointing that out to people. My friend bought this album when it came out in 1984. I think it scared him; he sold it to me for $5. Title track songwriting is genius: you have a fade-out at the end as the lyrics turn pro-Christian ("Priest denies the day the Antichrist was ever born"), so it presents itself as an everlasting battle between good and evil.
