When I tie in wings, I tend to wrap too far forward toward the eye. Now, I figure out where the tie in point is, accounting for any hackle that will go in front,so that there is adequate room for a whip finish, and start my thread at that point on the hook. I make sure nothing goes in front of the thread until it is time to wrap the hackle or dubbing. This avoids material creep towards the eye. I think this is a Kelly galloup trick which has really helped.

I now teach a beginner to whip finish at the eye of the hook as the first step in fly tying. This helps them understand the proportion of the head of the fly and they are less likely to destroy their first fly because they didn't know how to complete the tying process.

As always great tutorial. I started reclaiming some old hooks and your tutorial made me realize I have been crowding my hook eyes for many years. Interesting how we become creatures of habit.

One I've seen also is to use a finger tip from a latex glove which is put on the shank of the bobbin holder and pulled over the fly to pull back material from the head when tying and finishing the head.

I have used the razor blade, I have also placed a loop of fine copper wire in the hook eye to pull tippet through, because it was tight.

Here's a link that will help with the hook designations: midcurrent.com/gear/essential-trout-flies-hooks/ Something important to keep in mind is that though most hook manufacturers use the same terminology, the actual dimensions are not standardized. This is even true when inspecting hook models from just one brand, making it that much more confusing at times for us as consumers. The guidelines listed in the article above are generally followed by most hook companies, but be aware that slight differences exist.
