My grandmother accidentally started a pumpkin patch in her yard a few years ago. She didn't know what happened to her seeds or she either only meant to plant a few seeds and then when the fall came around she noticed wayyyy too many were growing than she expected and since she's the senator in Connecticut she has a mini event where she lets kids come and pick them from her yard so they don't go to waste!

Talking about seeds that accidentally grow, it reminds me of how we got random plants growing in our backyard. We lived in the countryside in Cambodia in the late 1990s. We didn't have tap water or a toilet and I had a habit of swallowing seeds so every now and then we would have different kind of plants growing in our backyard where I pooped the seed out. To make the matter even worse (or better), our house was right next to the only elementry school of our commune so random kids always left the seeds they ate from who knows where and they would ended up growing all over our fences like pumpkin and watermelon. It sounds digusting but very cool at the same time that we could help growing more plants by simply eating them and take a dump... However most of my friends would poop in the rice fields and the plants only ended up getting uprooted by farmers.

I'm kinda sad for the resources that go into pumpkins that won't be eaten. But then again there's also flower farms and lawns. I'll just think of it that way.

I am growing jarrahdale, fairytale, and autumn buckskin for pumpkin puree/baking and cooking needs. I also have a regular orange one meant for carving/decoration. That one little seed isn't just capable of producing one big pumpkin... It can produce A LOT. My jarrahdale took over a huge part of my yard. We call it The Beast... One tiny seed produced a MASSIVE plant that is quite prolific and FULL of fruit. My others are producing quite a bit too, but the jarrahdale has been the most impressive.

I am from Trinidad and Tobago and we make pumpkin rice....it so so good. When I see how pumpkins go to waste for decorations it saddens me it's an excellent food with lots of fiber, and a complex carbs. Pumpkin is even put into delicious beans dishes such as stew redbean..etc, Trinidad Callaloo....has pumpkin in it.Our superfood.

Pumpkin Pie. An American classic that's been perfected in my family for generations. All throughout the holidays many variations of pumpkin pie are served at our family functions and each cook is famous for their version. The art of making pumpkin pie is a big deal and a great honor. Same goes for Lasagna.

I have to go to such extremes to protect anything in the cucurbits family. When I grow pumpkins for example, I have to use netting which can be a pain because the pumpkin vines sprawl out everywhere. I also use an organic product called Azasol.

They were pretty simple to grow from seed. I've only shown them to my friends (16/17 yr olds) at school as I fear some of the younger children might pick them without me knowing. I have run the school garden for a couple of years now but everyone seems to enjoy learning about what we grow. I recently harvested sweetcorn and runner beans. I also have a herbaceous border and rockery which have looked pretty over the summer.

In my local New Haven Connecticut area, I have been looking for Culinary pumpkin as you mention in your video. And for my effort, I found a single of Stop & Shop in East Haven CT that only sold the Blue Hubbard in the very small size. Searching the Internet, I found that the Long Island Cheese pumpkin is only grown and sold in the 2 counties of Long Island, NY.

I have always liked butternut squash for pumpkin pies. Interesting info about the real pumpkin in canned pumpkin.

I love your videos, you are very informative. But we need more info like how many times it needs to be irrigated. And when is the best time to plant it.

The pumpkins that are use for “can pumpkin”, my mom grows them and we make a simple pumpkin juice from it. Just shave off the outer layer and cut the flesh into bite size pieces. Boil it in water and add sugar. It’s so comforting during winter if you drink it hot.

In my country, baked pumpkin seeds are a snack. We most often sprinkle salt on them to "enhance" the flavor.
