Poetic, dark, sensual, provocative, with unbeatable bass and string arrangements and a story with echoes of Nabokov's Lolita ... what more could you ask for?
I don't understand anything apart from like 3 words and yet this is one of my most listened songs, there is just something so magical about the arrangement, the bassline, the guitar tone, crisp drums and, of course the string section..
True same here!! Music is just sometimes this magic aura tht takes you into another dimension and transcends through cultures!!! Am I right? Im 74 and glad I can still discover this amazing music thanks to internet! Cheers, rock on!
Melody The wings of my Rolls brushed the pylons; Not knowing where I was, lost, We arrived, my Rolls and I, in a place, Dangerous and isolated. There, standing at the edge of the bonnet Of the Silver Ghost from the 1900s, Shines the radiator’s silver: Venus Whose light wings fly forth and forward. While the bursting noise of the radio Covers the muted sound of the motor, Proud and arrogant, she stares at the horizon, Aimlessly, ignoring the asphalt pavement, Back alleys, dead-ends with no parking Allowed; serenely indifferent, She holds the reins of my twenty-six horsepower, Princess of darkness, cursed archangel, Modern Amazon whose sculptor Named you Spirit of Ecstasy. And there I was, fooling around, before losing Control of the Rolls. Driving slowly as if Drifting along, when a sharp thud Pulled me out of my hazy dreams. Damn! I see lying there in front of the car The wheel of a bicycle still spinning And, like a doll who’s lost its balance, Her skirt is pulled up on her white pants: ‘What’s your name?’ ‘Melody’ ‘Melody what?’ ‘Melody Nelson’ Melody Nelson has red hair And it’s her natural colour.

Came across this song in a deep black hole searching through Apple Music and I’m so glad I did. The groove at the beginning of the track is everything. Holy shit don’t get me wrong the whole song is great but there’s so much more to explore on that groove in the beginning.

Certainly his masterpiece (with L'homme à la tête de chou). The only artist able to make french sound great, and bold enough for musical experimentation (like oriental cords mixed with electric guitar). Sorry to say, but understanding french is compulsory if you want to really appreciate Gainsbourg. His lyrics are unique, often imitated but still unequaled
WOW, just heard this...amazing! I have to say I heard "Paper Tiger" by Beck first but think it might be a little of a rip off of this song. The orchestration, and progression and really everything (other than the language or spoken word delivery). Anyone else catch that?
I came from before the days of people prefacing their sentence with: “I came from _______” . So.... since I just said it, ill say it more: I came from the days where I just wanna hear this particular song again while driving through the canyons with my dog in my convertible whilst I enjoy the sunshine. I am going to Mulholland doggy park where I will be listening to the song again. I will walk up to strangers in the park and preface my conversations with “I came from.....” and I will make up a new lie every time. To one group of people I will say “I came from Walgreens”, next group: “I came from Beaverland”, next group: “I came from a cult”, next group: “I came from Black Rock City”, and I will just repeat this ALL DAY LONG. Even if I’m talking to a different group of strangers and someone already heard me before. Would you like to know WHY I am doing this? It is all because “I CAME FROM THE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL DOWN THE STREET”.
My dad plays in the strings section, he played the viola. Jean-Claude Vannier is the magnifiscent orchestrator.
Your father is a legend.
I play Air Drums on this one frequently...me, a legend...nah...just a groover

Dave Richmond on bass...superb. or was it Herbie? Either way superb.
Vannier dont wanna talks 'bout Gainsbourg now...Am I wrong?
That bassline.

Hello, there is a spiritual successor to this song with even MORE drama and orchestra: Beck - Paper Tiger // Check it out! :)
That bass tone. My god.
the great herbie flowers. Brings magic to every recording he's on. An absolute masterclass in groovy bass lines.

Whose light wings fly forth and forward.

Allowed; serenely indifferent,

Control of the Rolls. Driving slowly as if

Melody Nelson has red hair
And it’s her natural colour.
Thank you for translation ❤
Inoubliable ❤
Masterpiece of rock
Absolutely!
I am always in a good mood to listen to Serge. This song shows his great voice without doubt. And the groove is sensational.
The use of strings in this song and Beck's Paper Tiger are eerily similar. There was definitely inspiration taken from Gainsbourg.
The strings are totally amazing
+Fran Seraph Yes. and so are the drums. Drums remind me of the similarly laid back but bloody clever drumming in some Fun Loving Criminal songs
no coments the must !! it's perfect ... Merci serge gainsbourg !
Was für ein geniales Werk
Stimmt!
"Mélodie a les cheveux rouges , et c'est leur couleur naturelle"
Jeeeezzzz

Merci pour ce partage
Serge Gainsbourg a fait là un véritable chef d'œuvre
Magnifique
Une version longue époustouflante
RIP Serge Gainsbourg
Variation sur Marilou est très bien, et encore plus coquin!
Fabulous.
Loooooove the groove in this. It's so perfect.

This shit is classic
So good I named my daughter after it

... do you understand the lyrics?? Lol
What's the colour of her hair? and, if she's a redhead, is it her natural colour?
Thank you, Loop Daddy. You're an American hero.
masterpiece. can trace the huge influence on Air`s music.
I´m thinking the same thing
And Beck, or at least one of Beck's songs.
@@k-leb4671 "Paper Tiger" from Sea Change.

Quel génie....
This song was probably responsible for a lot of babies back in the day...
I have a friend who's called Melody because of what you said.
Such was the genius of Serge Gainsbourg, he could turn people talking about crashing on a girl on her bike with a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost.

just heard this 7 n half minute belter on radio 6. pure class.
I've heard this song most of my life...Except it was David Holmes' "Don't Die Just Yet".
UM GÊNIO DA MUSICA FRANCESA
Heard this on 'Greenberg', what a great song.
Surnomma "Spirit of Ecstasy"
"Tu t'appelles comment?"
"Melody"
"Melody comment?"
"Melody Nelson"
Melody Nelson a les cheveux rouges
Et c'est leur couleur naturelle

I love that guitar, because it sounds so "opressed". Like it wants to explode, but never does.

Du pur Serge Gainsbourg. Inspiré du livre de Nabukov, Lolita... Je crois. Il maestro.
