So Black Magic did just release more Raw options which seem much better than DNG Raw. Not as universally accepted as REDCode as of now but we'll likely see updates on editing software.
So Raw may now become the common setting for the BMPCC4k.
I like taking photos and occasionally shoot a vlog but primarily I'm interested in a more affordable option for making a movie. I like a lot of what I see in the BM and the price is amazing, but I am still on the fence. Great Potato, do you have any suggestions for me?

The Red looks “better” as far as looking more filmic right out of the gate. But it doesn’t look $18,700+ better, that’s for sure. Especially since I feel like you can get the BMPCC 4K to look like the Red in post-production; if not better. Blackmagic has democratized and revolutionized the filmmaking industry. For better or for worse!
Sweet comparison, and the colors on the RED look really pleasing VS the BMPCC4K! The only issue I have with your video is giving the RED a pro for having an articulating screen. The 4.7" RED monitor cost $1,450USD and the 7" monitors cost over $2.5K, while at least the Black Magic comes with a monitor in the first place. You could buy an Atmos Ninja V or a Feelworld F5 for a cheaper articulating screen solution.

I think the black magic's additional color graded work that it needs is worth the time considering the cost savings up front, depending on the use it'll be intended for. This video was great.
We can still use 2 luts no BM BRAW and have a great finished look in seconds

If you are having trouble grading bmpcc4k footage I would recommend using the bmpcc4k to extended video lut. It is a really good starting point for grading.

REDs start up times! Ug!! With a bunch of modules attached sometimes we wait over 2 minutes for full boot up.
I started off filming with the bmpcc. Eventually upgraded to the bmmcc. Sold those off and now I own the epic w. Was looking for a smaller low maintenance cinema camera to film with, when the epic w just wouldn't work b/c of its size or not having the manpower or time. Couldn't find anything in the price bracket of 1-3K for what I was looking for. UNTILLLLL the bmpcc4k. It's a great camera alongside the Red! ...To anyone who has a budget of 1K-4K and wants that cinematic/filmic look rather than a video look, Idk what you're doing if you aren't looking at the bmpcc4k! :-)
Perhabs you should to shoot in raw and then use Davinci Color Management / ACES conversion for BMPCC4K material for better results.
But I totally agree that BM still can't achieve good color conversion math like Red did it in IPP2 or ARRI in their cameras.
Since 2012 year. This is sad. Especially if we know that BM makes their software that contains a lots of this math.
blackmagic will probably add it to their cameras in a firmware update

Excellent comparison video. Although, for $1,300, and nice color science, I think the BMPCC4K is a great tool to have in your bag. But, after watching this...I want a RED camera, too.

Red is fenomenal but BMPCC4K seems to be 'hall of fame' candidate after few months after the release.And Blackmagic deserve a lot of respect not trying to 'milk' the customers - they give great performance for great price and also their ecosystem is open source (just the opposite of Sony).Great respect for Blackmagic.Also if BlckmagicRaw arrive soon for bmpcc4k this will be killer for the others in the up to 5000$ range. :)

I would imagine you could get those greens to match using HSL secondary. I very added a bit lushness to an outdoor scene using HSL secondary, and the footage didn't fall apart, despite being an 8-bit 4:2:0 XAVC-S file.

You grade (wrong LUT or whatever) the BMPCC4K totally wrong and you're complaining about wrong colors then!?
Potato dude... great video. i love the BMPCC4K and I hate it... The great points are amazing... the flaws are astounding... especially if you want to stick to the budget the camera claims to keep. With home made rigs, it still gets expensive... the Footage is AMAZING... I'd pick the BM camera over the red...
To me the BMPCC4k clips kinda looks like a movie but the Red Looks like a commercial
It's pretty amazing that bmpcc4k is compared more to cameras like Red, Arri or "at least" fs5 and c200 than Gh5 or a7 wich are in same price point witch black magic.

The original BMPCC was already the best bang for buck camera, even with its shortcomings. The 4K model is to me, the new king. Hands-down best reasonably priced 4K camera on the market.

Did you say "RAW recording" as an advantage of the RED? It should me mentioned that the BMPCC also shoots .dngs. Workflow with the dngs from the bmpcc is so easy and simple through Resolve. The RED's advantages sound very flimsy.
Apart from the fact the RED looks like a cinematic film and the BM doesn't. I think, even though the value isn't great, the RED is still much better in terms of image quality and aesthetic.
@@jambononi That's pretty subjective. The Black Magic colors really well. I'm not saying you would never choose choose the RED, but its inflated prices are starting to look a little silly.
Well it's subjective whether you like the colours, but it's not subjective that green was yellow. Which could become a genuine post production nightmare which I have experienced with camera's before. If you get the white balance wrong etc. It's just not a situation you want to be in, especially when normal cameras don't suffer from that anymore like Sony and Panasonics like they used to.
I'm going with the bmpcc because
A) it doesn't cost a five figure sum and still not be useable
And
B) it can basiy achieve the same results with a bit more colour processing so....its a no brainer
Oh and
C) I don't have any friends that would help me operate my camera:,(

You mentioned it wasn't the Gemini and I'm here because I know my EPIC-X Dragon does the best low-light out of any camera I've owned, but not good enough, especially from what I've seen the BMPCC can do. Big fan of your content, thanks!

i bought a 5d mk3 for a hobby and i end up outside of the house overnight. i was kicked out for a hobby, i dont smoke, i dont drink, i dont gamble, i dont womanize, i dont hang out on Saturdays with friends, i just go home and be with her.
I bought a red raven kit with the sigma 18-35 f1.8 and the sigma 50-100 f1.8

And from my personal using experience, bmpcc4k does not output 4k through that HDMI, only 1080p 60fps at most.
Only real question is why didn't he color grade the Blackmagic and adjust it to replicate the look he seemed to like on the Red... It isn't as if he couldn't have boosted the greens in post to get it to the same level as the Red.
