The word "Marathon" is from the place that the first Hellenopersian war was fought during the second Persian campaign against the city-states of the area that now is modern Greece. The general responsible for the Hellenic victory was an Athenian named Miltiades (pronounced Miltiadis) and not Leonidas' father. Also the messenger who brought the news of the victory back to Athens did die due to fatigue (he ran in full armor) and that's why we have today's classic marathon (42 km, the distance between the town of Marathon and Athens)

Yeah, definitely watch 300. It was actually based off a comic somebody made after watching an old movie about Thermopylae, so the lighting effects and stuff like that were all made to make it feel like you were reading the comic.
