Yeah in Holland a lot of people have mopeds and scooters, it's part of the daily commute. The sad part is that no motorcyclist waves at you, only if you have a motorcycle with a 50cc engine will they wave. I have a Aprilia Rx 50 with a 80cc engine so I don't feel excluded from the wave lol.

My friends and I grew up on Mopeds through the ‘80s as teens. We used to tune and tweak them to run 45mph and we really thought we were doing something lol. God they were fun. The freedom as a 15yr old was just incredible. I often think I’ve buying one for nostalgia, but I was probably 130lbs back then. Don’t know if one could go over 15mph with my weight of 200lbs now lol.

Here in the UK, at 16 all you can have on your licence is a moped so a group of us in the late 80's used to rag around on 'peds, tuning them and generally being as badass as 49cc will allow. I had a Simson S51, which were built in East Germany before the wall came down. They were very tuneable and quicker than the Japanese bikes. Great to see there is still a kindred spirit out there.

Back in the mid-‘80s I owned a couple SACHS mopeds from Germany. The older model of the two was a bit quicker. I installed a 58 main jet I think it was and it would top out at 45mph which we thought was really doing something lol. I would’ve loved to pal around with you fellas back then lol.

Honda MB5's are motorcycles and not mopeds.
The MB5 had a 49cc motor, but was capable of speeds up to 55mph.
It was only made and released in the US in 1982!
Two of my friends in junior high had one; one in red trim and one in black.
I rode them like I stole them every opportunity I could.

Still surprises me how much of a culture has sprang up around these modest little runabouts, but on the other hand, what's not to like? They're cheap, the fuel economy is outstanding, they don't take up much storage or parking space, and even the basic 50cc ones are fun as hell to go riding around on.
I personally have a 1982 Honda Urban Express Deluxe I traded a few bits and bobs for off after practically begging to buy it for months. No great shakes, just a little 50cc two-stroke stinker with 4200 miles on the clock, but she was a runner when I got her, and aside from a few things I've had to fix she's in good shape. Like to go riding just for fun and to go run errands (also does a fair job fumigating mosquitoes, nice side benefit so far as I'm concerned), and I'm still as madly in love with the little thing as when I took it for a spin for the first time.
Honda built 'em bulletproof, especially the old two-strokes, you take care of the engine they'll run forever.

Tomos is one of the best mopeds, especially domestic, Slovenian models. No hideous pedals and models that were never ever sold in USA. Slovenia is one of the few countries not requiring pedals so mopeds look more badass than anywhere else.

Back in the 80's I had a Garelli but my friend had a Derbi Sport Laguna. It was like a crotch rocket moped. Cafe bars, a tach, flip down footpegs, and a foot brake for the rear as well as an expansion chamber exhaust that I always took the baffle out of when I rode it. It would do 50mph.

  • @PhilbyFavourites

Wow...... A whole different perspective to the UK! Our moped world was driven by 1970’s legislation restricting 16 year olds to mopeds until they were 17 whereupon they could then step onto a Japanese 30bhp 250cc rocket ship. Hence now mopeds are viewed by the UK 50 somethings as an item to be bog standard from their "yoof" (Janet Street-Porter's quotes).
Interesting to hear why America got mopeds in the 1970’s, even more weird to see they've become a hipster accoutrement. So here's the challenge for them. In 1975 my friend Martin S chopped (well cut it about with a hacksaw, put a loud exhaust on it and spray painted it with Halfords blue metallic paint) a Raleigh Runabout and it became "Pedalglide in Blue". Love to see you make one of those - Martin's 60 this month he would certainly chuckle over that.

Moped and scooter laws have changed dramatically, in California. 42 years ago I owned a Puch Maxi moped with aluminum mag rims, no spokes. At that time it was the most expensive model, they sold, it cost $600. All I had to do was registered it as a bicycle and could ride it anywhere, with no motorcycle license or insurance, except freeways. When I was registering it at my local police department they thought I was crazy and they had to look up the laws on a moped. Once they determine that I was right, they then issued me a bicycle license. Everybody down there registering there regular bicycles couldn't believe it. I now own a 1000 watt electric motor DIY beach cruiser. I will post below three categories scooters / moped / Electric and motorized bicycle laws. After reading all three California laws, I believe owning a electric or motorized bicycle will give you the most freedom and least-expensive.
    California Motorized Scooter Laws
In California, a motorized scooter, also referred to as an electric scooter, is defined as having:
Two wheelsHandlebarsA floorboard that can be stood on while riding the scooterA motor that powers the vehicle
While a motorized scooter can have a driver’s seat, this isn’t a defining feature of a scooter under California law.
You can operate a scooter with any class of driver’s license in California; you don’t need a license specific to scooters, but you still do need to have a driver’s license. And while motorized scooters are street-legal vehicles, they do not need to be registered with the DMV or carry license plates.
While on the road, motorized scooter riders need to obey the same traffic and safety laws as any other vehicle. However, there are also some scooter-specific restrictions in California:
The driver needs to wear a U.S. Department of Transportation-compliant helmet at all times.Scooters can’t be ridden on roads with a speed limit greater than 25 miles per hour, unless there is a bike lane, in which case the scooter can only be ridden within it.As with other vehicles, motorized scooters should not be operated on sidewalks. There cannot be a passenger on scooters, just the driver.Motorized scooters shouldn’t be driven faster than 15 miles per hour on the road.
These regulations apply to standard motorized scooters. Mobility scooters, on the other hand, can be driven at up to 30 miles per hour on the road. However, this law only applies to mobility scooters operated by seniors or those with a physical disability.
    California Mopeds Laws
A moped in California is a vehicle with the following characteristics:
Two or three wheels. If your vehicle has four wheels, it will generally be considered a car or off-road vehicle. An electric motor and automatic transmission. A moped may also include pedals, if it’s not entirely propelled by its motor. The moped isn’t capable of being driven faster than 30 miles per hour on level ground.
Note, if your vehicle is referred to as a “moped,” but it doesn’t go faster than 20 miles per hour, it will likely be considered a motorized bicycle. A “noped” may qualify under different categories depending upon its maximum speed, so you should confirm potential requirements with the DMV if you’re unsure, before operating one on the road.
In order to drive a moped, you need to first have a motorcycle license, either M1 or M2, which should be carried while riding on public roads. You also need to register your moped with the DMV and obtain a license plate for it. Once you’ve registered your moped, there’s no annual renewal, this is a one-time process. When you register your moped, you’ll also receive a moped ID card, or registration card, which acts as your proof of ownership. You should also carry your moped ID card at all times when operating the moped.
Moped riders also need to wear an approved safety helmet when riding on public roads.
California Electric & Motorized Bicycle Laws
Motorized bikes, also called electric bikes, are similar to mopeds but are distinct in how they’re treated by California law. A motorized bicycle is defined by having pedals, an electric motor with fewer than 1,000 watts and a maximum speed of 20 miles per hour or less on level ground.
Electric bicycles are street-legal in California, but you don’t need a license or registration in order to operate one on the road. However, you must be at least 16 years old and wear a DOT-approved safety helmet. In addition, motorized bikes can only be ridden by one person at a time-you can’t carry passengers.

I was reading that they call the M1 and M2 an endorsement tacked on to your drivers license. If you do not have the endorsement can you register your moped?or will you be denied the registration?Cheers

here is tennessee, it's about the same, you can ride in the bike paths if it's 49cc/50cc, however, if you are riding on the roadway you still have to get a license plate to ride it on the road, wear a helmet & take safety precautions. I "attempted" to get an old honda moped from a local bike shop, but the guy wanted 3 or 4000 dollars for it & i figured i could get a brand new scooter for that price, so i did get a honda ruckus, that was my first, then i bought an old yamaha vino125 & hubby & i worked on it because it wasn't running, had a lot of fun on it, still do.....I guess the guy thought it was a classic; the old honda moped, but i'm happy w/my choices

honda mb5/0. Elitists will say its only a moped if you straddle it like a bike, 50cc or was originally 50cc and has pedals. Take the honda express for example I have two and I call them mopeds even though they dont have pedals. In my opinion any originally 50cc bike from at most early 80s qualifies as a moped.

They not all have pedals only automatic. pedals are mostly to start the engines but there are some people who modify it to a footrests and then you need to push the moped to start it my custom Honda Amigo 1970 got that too. You also got mopeds you need to shift mostly like 6 gears.

@@extec101 yeah I know, its the only thing you can drive from 16 years of age, for the rest you need to be 18. Also British and Italian tuning culture has spread very far in europe.

Great film guys! Over here in France many of us use 125cc scooters as an everyday drive. Cheap, practical, quick and fun! What's not to like?

What's not to like is that in most countries you would need a full bike license .

Mopeds are motorcycles with less then a 50 cm3.Not all of them have pedals and not all of them are made just for making jokes about them.Moped that did the burnout in the end of the video is Honda MBX 50 that is serious bike, like some of Tomos models without Sprint, all other Tomos have speeds.Sprint is a scooter and even if you buy it new it was a joke,Targa just look nice.Look for a Tomos Colibri 15 SL,15 SLC,15 Sprint,Cross 50 Junior,BT 50/50 S,APN 4 MS,Cross 50 Senior,ATX 50C,thats the best Tomos mopeds.

+Radovan Jovicic Mopeds are defined differently in different places. For instance, in Philly, a moped must be less than 50cc and have pedals to be legally registered as a moped. Otherwise, it's treated like a motorcycle and all motorcycle laws apply.
And yea, the MB5 is cool 👍

+rdub205 In my country mopeds are: "The moped is a motorized 2 wheel or 3 wheel vehicle with the engine volume of max. 50 cc's and that cannot exceed speeds of 50 kph (31 mph). Basically everything is a moped in Croatia that has 50 cc's and can't go faster than 50 (31). Which means we can't kit out our peds since they instantly fall under the motorcycle category if we do so and then you need a license for them.
