1:25 they are all straight from the devil. I am always tripping on the laces and the bungies refuse post integration. 3:00 that is when I am thankful for my size. I push pull shove and peek. Is the second period recorded on VHS?!? 6:33 YES!! As soon as I trip on a lace I think about it before every push shuffle and shove. Don't want to end up on my ear when they are shooting! Great game all things considered. As an official caffeine addict who gets headaches with out my coffee and a member of a Saturday morning league I have coffee before every game. It is a horrible thing to do. It is a diarrhetic so it will dehydrate you in a hard beat. I think about that every time I am drinking coffee on the way to the rink.
Hah VHS is even more clear than the camera here. Its footage from the teams camera not mine I offered to donate a camera if I play more with them. Thanks for watching !
Nice job. Your butterflys and slides looked great. I've done a pre-workout drink before. When I did our "Breakfast Club" pickup which is 6-8am, I definitely recommend it. It's a two hour slog and in the morning. Gave me energy to keep pushing through the two hour of game and carried through onto the beginning of work. However, this past Tuesday night we had our first regular season game at 11:15pm - tried it then...nope...dont' recommend. Didn't need the extra energy because it was only 1 hour. Then by the time I got home at 1am, I was still a bit awake. Although I did take some melatonin before leaving the rink...so that helped.
You played well! I could relate to everything you said too haha. I usually drink caffeine during dinner, like 3 hours pre game and sometimes take a gatorade onto the ice for a little boost later in the game if I need it.
Nice ! Does that keep you up at night after? I definitely find having a hydration drink couple hours before helps as I barely sip out of my water bottle
I bought my set of 3X pads lightly used last year and had no issues with the toe ties so far, except that I had to tighten them up so they would rotate my pads back properly. As for coffee pre game, I play a 9.30pm pick up and quick on-ice warm up is enough to get me locked in and I don't think I've ever had issue with losing focus because of it being late in the evening. Extra bonus is that I can fall asleep better when I get home and don't have to worry about coffee induced bowl movements.
Your skating looks soooo good in this video! Wasn't so much a malfunction as I just couldn't get used to the dangler two games ago. Never again. Awesome video as always.
Your movement looks vastly improved compared to a year ago, both on your feet and in the butterfly. My league has games starting as late as 10:45pm. I'll typically drink about one coffee cup (or the equivalent amount of caffeine) five hours before gametime. That keeps me awake during the game but doesn't wreck my sleep schedule. I put Simmons elastic toe ties on my old Bauers, and they didn't have any noticeable wear when I sold those pads a year later; they seem to be made of some robust stuff. The first week I wore those pads was the first week I didn't have any lower body joint pain the day after a game. I'm currently wearing Warrior Ritual G5 pads, which have really nice integrated inch-wide elastic bands for both the toe and Lundy straps, and I can never go back.
I always have a half cup of coffee before a game, as part of my pregame ritual. I use bungee toe ties and recently bought the Bauer ones with the leather V I think there sold on the shadow pads
Do you feel that having the coffee helps? I used to do a full cup + a scoop of creatine ... And yeah I have those bungee toe ties aswell, which I also snapped during a game hah.
@@ovr40goalie Hi Victor, I don't really notice a difference with the coffee, just part of my pregame routine. I did try a 1/4 scoop of Creatine and otter than sweating more than normal I didn't think it made a difference. I was feeling pretty sluggish in the summer, I started taking protein powder in the morning and I have noticed an improvement in my energy level. I took the plunge this weekend and bought Bauer med Mach pads on sale as well as CCM Pro pants in large they were on sale as well, I like the tighter fit and noticed the thigh pads in slightly shorter than my Bauer pants.
You look so much lighter on your feet than a year ago. All that practice is evident. Also, after much experimentation, I landed on using ProLaces but with a 2" skate lace bridge, which helps a lot with consistent post integration but also gives me the flexibility my ankles and hips crave, and also makes getting dressed faster 😂
That’s a great idea I’m gonna try that with my existing prolaces. I like having that stationary bit of space there so it’s predictable. Will give this a try ! Thanks
Love playing up a few levels now and then, the games feel so much more structured and flow more predictably despite everything moving so much faster. Note on caffeine, a reasonable amount beforehand can be beneficial but it is a vasoconstrictor and can reduce blood flow if you go overboard with preworkout or coffee.
@@ovr40goalie Definitely hard to say, but non-stim preworkouts are pretty popular for guys who like to work out later in the day since they'll help with blood flow and focus without needing caffeine. I usually just eat a meal beforehand with some rice or other similar carbs to keep my energy up while I play.
I love pro-laces! Skate lace I've had shed every season at some point. I go back and forth on caffeine, some games I feel I really need it, but some of my best games were just straight hydrating all day with water and no caffeine.
LOL - Coffee keeping you up at night and can't sleep - LOL poor guy... I love all the bungie and elastic toe systems on Bauer and Warrior gear. My problem is my regular skate lace coming undone. So thanks for the guys who suggested the velcro wrap. Will have to check out dollar store for some. As for your comment about age and pre-game: I'm 49, and the 30 mins before I leave my house for the game I'm watching Ovr40 videos and stretching at home to get a good and warm, in advance of the pre-game.
I'm 48, and play at 6:30 AM once a week. I take two 250 ML caffeine pills, a pre-workout (that I also use before the gym) and a Redbull on the way to the rink - ITS NECCESSARY! I also cant stress enough how important it is to get a really good night of sleep. I can also say I do NOT miss night games anymore. Its rough in the morning games but after you get loosened up and moving its the best way to start the day, although as a goalie when 2-3 in the afternoon hits, I'd give anything for a nap. Not sure if you're using clear tape on your laces and bungees, but if not I highly recommend it - especially your skate laces. I just take one wrap around after I tie them and they will NOT come undone. I never used bungees, and my Warriors have elastic straps and hooks.
I think it I had an early ice time like that I would do exactly the same! Good idea about clear tape around the laces. I’m just having the worst luck , either bungees or skate laces just coming undone part way through
I will sometimes drink a mid afternoon coffee. But I have to be careful, if I drink too late it'll keep me up late, even if it's a 10 pm game and I don't get home until after midnight!
My hips and knees love a good bungee now that I am 45. “ mature” I agree not as durable, I have had them snap during a game. I always have an extra set in my bag😃 There’s nothing worse than an equipment malfunction, It’s always in the back of your mind and because of how much gear we wear, it’s time-consuming to fix it. . I know this is soooooo bad I have quit wearing knee guards because no matter what I do they’re always sliding down. I had the same issue with knee pads sliding down. I now wear PAW knee guards protectiveathleticwear.com/kneepadsmain.htm They are a bit more expensive but easily the best investment I've made. Theres a built in harness so it'll never slip during a game. In my previous video "Whats in the bag" I quickly talk about the knee guards.
so i have issues with alot of toe ties, with how i tie mine they can be prone to being cut, havent had issues sincei purchased the pro lace bungies hockey shop sells, they are bungie cords wrapped in skate lace to help with those skate cuts n wear down of frayign bungie cords do on their own
I tried a coffee a few weeks ago and i liked the energy boost i got but i wasn't a big fan of needing to run off the ice between periods (we only get a few minutes), stripping off my gear to take a leak and then rush to get my gear back on. Otherwise it was great 😂
I loved my switch to bungees. I don't think I will ever switch back, even if they aren't as durable. I recently switched to the Bauer Shadow toe ties. I really like them, but its only been a few games. They feel like a hybrid bungee though compared to the other bungees I have used. Time will tell on how durable they will be, but thus far there are no issues with the durability. Also I hate how much a small issue can really effect my game. if something is feeling off it 100% effects my mental game.
@@ovr40goalie maybe need to put in a leather spacer so that it doesn't pop out? I think @hockeyreviews said he didn't like the shadow toe ties, and one of the reasons was it would pop out of the velcro.
I used to do 5 hour energy before games. I found it gave me a bit more jump however, it does nothing to help a tired brain. Some nights the game comes slow. Other nights it seems too fast. I suppose the pros have techniques to make sure they’re sharp for each game.
I'm 5'10. I originally started with a 25, then switched to 24 last year, now 23 feels so much better. I think its going to be different for everyone, I'm 5'10 but i have a short ankle to knee , but quite long arms! I can also use a shorter paddle now that I have more range in my hips to get lower than a year ago.
Thought you played really well. Teams looked a bit uneven based on skill and age from what you were saying. Your team had some good offensive chances and pretty nice goals. Your defense was not there for most of the other teams scoring chances or they were a step behind. You could definitely see your coaching sessions paid off for you. You seemed much more disciplined in your movements and your technique was really spot on. You were a bit shallow on a few of the goals, but that happens sometimes. You mentioned it on the screened goal, so at least you recognize how to fix that in the future. Good game just ran out of gas at the end there. Great video!!
I think we were all a bit surprised by how fast they were ! Definitely a lot more skilled than I’m used to , totally didn’t expect the extra dangle on the last two
@@ovr40goalie the game has changed so much over the years. What I have noticed the most is how fast the younger players are and how much it speeds the game up. Makes me feel like a fossil sometimes. You played great!! You will get em next time!
Why don't you just use the 2" lace tied into bungees? Best of both worlds. Great for RVH due to the lace being the first point from the pad, then the bungee follows and connects to your skate. Make them yourself really cheap, or buy Prolaces hybrids.
