The perfect james bond theme for me is skyfall by adele, supremacy by muse (skyfall), surrender by kd. Lang (tomorrow never dies), and radioheads's spectre. I like no time to die tho, it fits the atmosphere.
Although I thought the song was Ok, and a good Bond song, it did not exactly drive me through the wall. As far as I'm concerned, Skyfall remains the best Bond song I have heard, and I know them all. For that matter Skyfall is also, in my opinion anyway, THE best James Bond movie in the whole franchise. But No time to die is a pretty good one, superior to Spectre, which was slightly disappointing, especially coming after Skyfall, and on the level of Casino Royale, which was excellent. But Skyfall keeps its number one spot in my personal Bond ranking. Just about perfect on every level, A+++. I give No time to die an A+.
Honestly I liked Chris Cornell's You know my name, from Casino Royale. Kind of perfectly captured Craig's Bond aesthetic. A bit old themed as well as modern elements. It had the classic guitar riffs as well as an independent rock music vibe. Adele's skyfall imo was a masterpiece, really did justice to the enigma of Skyfall and scotland.
Personally, for me skyfall is the best since Adele was the perfect person for the job. British, great voice and completely understood what was needed for the movie. She even wrote the first draft in 10 mins.
I really appreciated the delicate aspects of the song, it is, at first glance, a little too tender to be a Bond Theme, especially compared to Skyfall which is epic and angsty and belty. This, however, perfectly reflects the movie itself. No Time To Die was by far the most heartfelt and heart-wrenching of the films while still incorporating everything that makes a good Bond film, and Billie's song reflects that. You could say it's almost...lullaby-esque in some ways...spoilers.
billie has said once that she used to make bond songs with her brother as writing practice for her songs and others should do something like that too as it's a great help in writing. i think even that played a major role in how good no time to die was as it helps with the bond-ness of the song

Even when you strip the instrumental away: You have the halftone steps in the melody that are set to the downbeats and emphasized by the singer timbre that creates the james bond suspence.
On the other hand, she refuses to credit either the songwriter for No Time To Die (Finneas Eilish) or the role of the film's scores in defining the Bond sound (never wonder why Tomorrow Never Dies nailed the Bond sound more than Goldeneye).

You Know My Name is based. I like Crow's theme, never understand why it's not liked (in fact, I think it better than k.d Lang's Surrender; scandalous, I know). Right. I don't think you can say, that the artist wrote the song alone, except maybe for Duran Duran song. And Billie co-wrote at least the lyrics for "No Time to Die".

One thing that I think should also be noted is the progression of "mood", at least in the Daniel Craig era. His Bond evolves from the reckless, shoot-them-all type to a more reflective and pensive type by (at least) Spectre (since I haven't seen No Time to Die). That presents the evolution from "You Know My Name" which is very rock and fast-paced, "Another Way to Die" which is still rock but slightly more muted in grandness. It all gets wrapped up in the narrative and musical motif in "No Time to Die". The progression, whether intentionally set by Eon or is coincidental from the artists is a thing that's fascinating.

Also with No Time To Die, the initial piano note sequence is 8 bars, each bar consisting of 8 notes. 2 bars make up each 'segment' of the sequence, so E B F# B | G B B(8va) B, is one 'sequence, with the '|' being the bar line. If we observe all the notes. E B F# B | G B B(8va) B E C F# C | G C B(8va) C E C# F# C# | G C# B(8va) C# Eb B E B | F# B F# B The changing note in the first three sequences, (B, C, C#), follow that classic Bond progression/suspense motif seen in Dr No., minus the final 'C'. It's subtle, but as it is the only note being changed, it gives a slight mystery/Bond vibe to it.
The best James Bond song for me was made for a completely different franchise and medium... It's "Snake Eater" sung by Cynthia Harrell for the "Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater" Stealth Adventure video game for the PS2.
An amazing bond song that never was. Definitely captured the mood and mysticism. Doesn’t get enough credit cause it came from a video spy game. But thank you for mentioning it
imo its not only about the elements, its also the lyrics itself. I remember just listening to the song before watching nttd but it definitely gave me the chills. ughh!!
Muse's song Supremacy was written to be a Bond song but it ended up not getting picked which is a shame because it is such a perfect Bond song. I wish they'd used it for this latest movie.
thats impossible these days dude. everyone wants billie eyelashes to sell their products. im tired of music industry. she's decent not that good. the way she sings, she is just a youtube singer class. thats it. muse'supremecy indeed, a masterpiece.
I liked No Time to Die as a film but Eilish’s song is far from the perfect Bond song. My personal favourites are Chris Cornell’s ‘You Know My Name’ and Adele’s ‘Skyfall’.
When I first heard NTTD I was telling everyone how this would be the perfect theme song for the next James Bond Movie...... then lo and behold it actually turned out to be the next theme. I was super chuffed 😊😊😊
Thank you!! When I first heard Jack White's and Alicia Keys' song, I thought "this sounds like a Bond song", only realizing later that it actually was. Since then I've been wondering what makes all James Bond song so recognizable. This video answers perfectly
No doubt No Time to Die and Skyfall are masterful, but my favorite - that got ignored entirely in this video - is Shirley's The World Is Not Enough. What No Time To Die lacked for me was the soaring crescendo in the last 30 seconds or so, that Tina's Goldeneye, Shirley's The World Is Not Enough, Adele's Skyfall, and the original Dr. No all had. I understand that is Billie adding her own spin on it - but arguably that's a core element of a good Bond song that I deduct marks for skipping.
It's splashes of music and sophistication - that's Bond! There are some dogma in classical and truly avant garde, I wouldn't say Madonna's song was weird. In fact, I think it's just edgy and refreshing. I listen to it repeatedly when it came out but I understand it is not everyone's cup of tea
One of the most insightful vids on Bond music I've seen. Some of these combinations are used in other movie scores and when you watch them you can hear a similar pattern and progressions. The minor chords with major overtones is quite a brilliant inclusion in the score. They make a huge difference to the overall experience. I am a musician so I am lucky. I love playing around with chord structures. When I play jazz I try not to improvise too much. I get the chords and actually write riffs around the chords.....Stan Getz did this. Listen to his solos on some popular Latin music and Bossa of his day. You'll find he is not improvising......he has actually scored every note. Its brilliant and it stood the test of time.
Thanks for this. I'm always wondering why things sound the way they do, but having no musical theory knowledge... At least now I know why Billie's Bond song sounds like one (though I did pick up on that final chord by myself).
Thinking about the Sam Smith song, I think his song could be said to check off at least two of these elements-the instrumentation and the rising/falling motif. They both come in at the same time in sections instead of running through the whole song, so maybe that’s why it wasn’t considered?
I think a little more time spent on The World Is Not Enough, Shirley Manson, Garbage would have been deserving. Its a gorgeous track, has all the Bond touch stones except maybe not being as brassy, it ends on the Bond Chord, and has twangy guitars through out. Its a shining example of an iconic sound. Maybe it gets less attention because the film was considered less than great? I think this one has a place up with the greatest bond themes. Her crescendo at the end its bombastic and intense. I love it. For the record, Billie and Finneas crafted a perfect Bond song. Along with Hans Zimmer’s orchestral layer, its exciting to listen to.
My personal faves are: 1. 'The World Is Not Enough' by Garbage 2. 'Spectre' by Radiohead 😉 3. 'The Living Daylights' by a-ha 4. 'You Only Live Twice' by Nancy Sinatra
Billie Eilish' Version fits the movie perfectly. _If you do not want to get spoiled, do not press on_ _"... Read more" or check the replies to this comment._ Alright, with James Bond dying, Billie Eilish's version beautifully represents the sorrowful end of a legendary spy. It's softer than most other themes and with her soft singing, it states that the highlight of James Bond's life is already past. As the video mentions, Billie Eilish uses a lot of elements from the original, showing how Bond to the very end remained Bond. The message I get from her Bond song is: "Bond is here, but he's gone at the same time." Despite Bond being dead, he will live on in the memory of millions of people.
There may be supporters for different genres of theme songs ( signature tunes) of various James Bond 007 movies but the fact remains that musical melodies have played electrifying, sensational & magnetic roles in keeping the audiences fully riveted to the storylines. 👌👌👍👍
Goldfinger is the daddy, no question. One of the best recordings of the 60s IMO. The theme itself is arguably the greatest composition of the twentieth century. Can’t be many people in the world who do not know it.
John Barry was paying homage to Stan Kenton, listen to some of Barry's interviews. Kenton had that big brassy sound and did a lot of experimentation with chord structure.

E B F# B | G B B(8va) B
E C F# C | G C B(8va) C
E C# F# C# | G C# B(8va) C#
Eb B E B | F# B F# B
The changing note in the first three sequences, (B, C, C#), follow that classic Bond progression/suspense motif seen in Dr No., minus the final 'C'. It's subtle, but as it is the only note being changed, it gives a slight mystery/Bond vibe to it.
Wow, you can write a full PhD thesis on this.
The best James Bond song for me was made for a completely different franchise and medium...
It's "Snake Eater" sung by Cynthia Harrell for the "Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater" Stealth Adventure video game for the PS2.
Hey! Thanks for the reference!
Omg. It really fits. Wow.
@@unliving_ball_of_gas You never noticed it was basically a bond song? There are many like it in MGS
@@fokjohnpainkiller I haven't played the game. I only searched it up bcoz of this comment
An amazing bond song that never was. Definitely captured the mood and mysticism. Doesn’t get enough credit cause it came from a video spy game. But thank you for mentioning it
Nothing can beat Skyfall. It’s simply perfect.
You Know My Name tho
@@FrancisHDI don’t think that’s a great bond song, hardly memorable, I personally liked Radioheads song more for the movie.
I'd love to have Lorde recording the next Bond theme.
London grammar would be amazing too
Yaya... yayaya...!
Or lady gaga
I wish she had done ir during the craig era.
8.15: Goldeneye actually includes the greyed-out 'suspense' progression.
Personally i lowkey like adele the most! Such a finesse, skyfall
The perfect bond theme was actually never used, Spectre by Radiohead. Best Bond theme imo.
There were other great unused bond theme songs that became hits.
What a ride!!! You've guide me through all the Bond songs, I've always loved the classic ones but really didn't know why! Thanks!
I personally still think Radiohead’s “spectre” is the best bond theme (it’s shame is wasn’t used).
This.
yeah sam smith song is garbage compared imo for a bond song
Eh, I like it; not really my taste, though. But whatever you guys like, I guess
imo its not only about the elements, its also the lyrics itself. I remember just listening to the song before watching nttd but it definitely gave me the chills. ughh!!
Muse's song Supremacy was written to be a Bond song but it ended up not getting picked which is a shame because it is such a perfect Bond song. I wish they'd used it for this latest movie.
True! I always found it a shame that it was not chosen…
Finally! Radiohead was good but nothing ever comes close to Muse's rendition
thats impossible these days dude. everyone wants billie eyelashes to sell their products. im tired of music industry. she's decent not that good. the way she sings, she is just a youtube singer class. thats it. muse'supremecy indeed, a masterpiece.
@@papacinoooo no
Finally someone talking about this
this analysis was amazing and Billie's no time to die was utterly perfect, love it so much!!
I liked No Time to Die as a film but Eilish’s song is far from the perfect Bond song. My personal favourites are Chris Cornell’s ‘You Know My Name’ and Adele’s ‘Skyfall’.
Excuse me! What about "Golden Eye"? Thus is the only perfect one.
No mention of Live and Let Die the only one written by a beetle and covered by Guns n Roses
Or Man with the Golden Gun
There's a song by Muse that also sounds really Bond-y, it's called "Supremacy".
It is also in “The Flash” on netflix!
Surrender by IL Volo sounds like classic Bond as well
@@rms3062 wait which episode
When I first heard NTTD I was telling everyone how this would be the perfect theme song for the next James Bond Movie...... then lo and behold it actually turned out to be the next theme. I was super chuffed 😊😊😊
okay dang this a great video!! i expected this from vox, not insider. keep it up yall
And there is not even one word about Paul McCartney's version.
So?
Radioheads version is god tier
You all know what the perfect bond song is and that's ddu du ddu du.

Can’t wait to see it on the big screen
One of my recent bond music favorites are Skyfall, Casino Royale. No time to die.
Thank you!! When I first heard Jack White's and Alicia Keys' song, I thought "this sounds like a Bond song", only realizing later that it actually was. Since then I've been wondering what makes all James Bond song so recognizable. This video answers perfectly
"THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH" IS MY FAVORITE.
GOLDFRAPP WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT PICK INSTEAD OF BILLIE EYELASH
The Genius duo, Bil and Fin ♡ this made me even and more proud of them.
This is very informative review indeed! worth sharing ♡
Skyfall will be allways the best bond song
License to kill, goldeneye, nobody does it better and gold finger is hard to beat
We know
I like these break downs, cause then u understand why u like a song and have a deeper appreciation for the artistry…. Well done
For your eyes only is one of the best songs in the franchise . Beats Billie Eillish any day.
The last shadow Puppets would be great for a bond theme!
Best explanation of all the themes, a big thank you.!!
Its brilliant and it stood the test of time.
favorite bond theme would be “Live & Let Die” written by Paul McCartney
Thank you!!! It seems as though people nowadays are too caught up in the Craig era Bond movies to give credit to the franchise as a whole.
Thanks for this. I'm always wondering why things sound the way they do, but having no musical theory knowledge... At least now I know why Billie's Bond song sounds like one (though I did pick up on that final chord by myself).
PUT RESPECT ON FINNEAS NAME HE DOES ALOT OF THIS
Just love her No time to die theme song! It captures the complicated story of Bond and Madeline so incredibly well. The best Bond song to me.
Garbage's song was just iconic
Great Bond lecture! Worth every minute!
Bond films still have the best credits ever
The design and editing of this video is superb. And you have an excellent voice for narration.
Thinking about the Sam Smith song, I think his song could be said to check off at least two of these elements-the instrumentation and the rising/falling motif. They both come in at the same time in sections instead of running through the whole song, so maybe that’s why it wasn’t considered?
Great Break Down, this deserves recognition because it took effort.
Another song that got all these elements perfect was Michael Bublè's 'Feelin Good'
I think a little more time spent on The World Is Not Enough, Shirley Manson, Garbage would have been deserving.
No no no, the perfect James Bond theme is Skyfall.
That was incredibly thorough, insightful and well put together. I'm not shook, but very stirred by your efforts. *raises martini glass* Cheers.
NOT A SINGLE MENTION OF DURAN DURAN’S “A VIEW TO A KILL”????????? THE O N L Y BOND SONG TO EVER CHART AT NUMBER ONE!!!!!! WHAT THE ACTUAL F*CK
no one cares about duran duran dude
What does that tell you about the value of charting vs. actually relevant to the bond series?
@@vp4744 you tell me genius? Try listening to the bloody song and get back to me. If your mom lets you.
@@DJL78 It doesn't even remotely sound like a Bond song
My personal faves are:
1. 'The World Is Not Enough' by Garbage
2. 'Spectre' by Radiohead 😉
3. 'The Living Daylights' by a-ha
4. 'You Only Live Twice' by Nancy Sinatra
Gotta agree with spectre and you only love twice as two really good ones. Shame spectre got ditched...
Billie Eilish' Version fits the movie perfectly.

Alright, with James Bond dying, Billie Eilish's version beautifully represents the sorrowful end of a legendary spy.
People just mad cuz Billie doesn't belt her face out like almost every singers that came before her.
In other words, "the future is now, old man!"
Goldfinger is the daddy, no question. One of the best recordings of the 60s IMO. The theme itself is arguably the greatest composition of the twentieth century. Can’t be many people in the world who do not know it.
There's no theme better than Golden Eye. Fight me!
It’s up there but personally I would say on her majesty’s secret service or octopussy
Far from it, but it is severely underappreciated. It made me wish Tina Turner would cover some actual U2 songs.
Very nice work! Very thorough for such a short video.
Swan Lee - Tomorrow never dies ❤️
John Barry was paying homage to Stan Kenton, listen to some of Barry's interviews. Kenton had that big brassy sound and did a lot of experimentation with chord structure.
no mention of “a view to a kill” ?
Moonraker is one of my favorites. Not very Bondie, but an absolutely amazing song.
Um...that was excellent!
Fascinating and much more interesting than I expected.
radiohead's spectre still no. 1
What a great and well written video! Amazing job!
I love James bon’s movies and that comes with loving the theme of each movie as well. I really liked Billie’s music. Hearing that on the theater was amazing
