James, would it be possible to link some of the old Stumpy Nubs videos that you referenced or showed clips from? I spent over an hour list night trying to find out why you were scoring lines in the side of a hand plane, with a hacksaw. I am guessing it was an angle guide? (if anyone knows please send me a message) Still would love to watch the original video though
@@mwimmer8947 That was the handplane surgery video. It didn't work very well. The chips got caught and the blade wanted to skew. th-cam.com/video/DiTwEeFgAIg/w-d-xo.html
I love and miss the antics, I think you can bring some of the humor back. Also I'm getting a little misty eyes seeing your dad again, particularly the outtakes. Point and counter point was hilarious 😂. Mustache Mike is still the best , your dad is an absolute gem. Oh and that James Hamilton guy is a real square... 😆 Oh and I knew instantly that was the UP in your intros. I've never been, but I had friend I worked with who was from the UP and he was the best and absolutely hilarious.
Been wondering about the origin of “Stumpy Nubs” grateful for the detailed exposition - and a pleasure to see the highlights from past years! Thanks so much.
I'm one of the few that have been with you since you started! And while I did find you humor very funny, I have to admit I probably wouldn't have stuck around for a decade if it weren't for what I learn from you. I started making cabinets with my dad more than 40 years ago but I still learn something almost every time I watch one of your videos. So congrats and keep it up! And now one small request for a future video. I believe that Stumpy should come out of retirement for one special episode on your channel. We haven't heard from him in a while and we miss him and want to make sure he's OK. So PLEASE, let's see Stumpy visit our screens once again!
46 years in the remodeling and building materials field. Never grow tired of watching your posts. Learning is a lifetime project. congrats on a decade.
I began watching in the spring of 2014 while recovering from surgery. I fondly remember the original Stumpy Nubs character. One of my favorite videos from that time is the sawbench build. It's a great balance between education and entertainment - I go back and watch either the original version or the short version when I can. You are my go to person for sound woodworking tips and advice James Hamilton. Thanks for ten years!!
James I was there when you were just Stumpy, it was such a catchy name how could you refuse to watch it. It help me begin my woodworking journal and today my channels closing in on 20,000 subscribers. You’ll always be stumpy to me, thanks James.
I remember some of these older videos and honestly, at times, bring Stumpy back LOL! You are funny and the comedy is much appreciated at times. Cheers on the 10 year anniversary! Here's hoping for another 10 years 🍻🍻
I've been following you for six or seven years so not you're whole You Tube journey, but for quite a while. I've enjoyed your content and learned so much from you. It doesn't matter who brings the content James or Stumpy, I appreciate you and look forward to a new year watching and learning. Thank you.
Congrats dude on making content for a decade. That's a real milestone i'm a new viewer with no real interest in wood working but this channel provides so much useful info like that flat nail point thing i learned a few days ago that you earned my sub. I hope to be here for the next decade of videos,
Not going to lie, I 100% agree. I don't think I'll ever be able to afford a workshop like my grandfather had, but over the last couple of years, I've enjoyed the videos on this channel immensely, and learned a lot even if I can't put it into practice. Thanks!
> i'm a new viewer with no real interest in wood working > this channel provides so much useful info like that flat nail point thing If you have no interest in woodworking, how could that information possibly be described as "useful" to you?
Personally, I will sorely miss "Stumpy Nubs". I've been watching you for about 5 or 6 years now. And will continue to do so. I understand it. Success often means sacrifice. Often means changing something up. Always got and loved your jokes! Hope that doesn't get cut out completely. But I do love that you are willing to keep doing this to teach what you know. Your videos are an invaluable resource. I don't look forward to the day you decide to retire. Love all you do, grateful you are there to do it. You saved my life with that video where you got hurt. For that I am deeply grateful. I will continue to watch and reference all your other videos for when I need help. Congratulations on your growth and success in what you do. You've earned it my friend.
You are still the puny-est guy on TH-cam! Loved your original videos as well as the current ones. Thanks for being you and taking us along for the ride through your growth during the last 10 years.
Maybe it’s because I’m a Dad and I get a kick out of Dad jokes, but I enjoy your sense of humor. Even more though, I’ve learned a ton from you and I’m know I have a lot more still to learn. From a new woodworker to you - thanks for all the knowledge!
Well, James, I have only been following you for the last 3 years, as one of the best woodworking channels with interesting, valuable, and reliable, content, but I must say I enjoyed every time you made a joke or funny comment. I think humor and rigor are not mutually exclusive, and that’s certainly true in Stumpy Nubs’ case. Thanks for all the good moments and lessons. Keep ‘m coming, and that 2022 may be good to you. 👍
Lucky for us, Stumpy is still alive and kicking, eventhough some what in the background. The humor used while adressing serious issues are much appriciated and im still looking forward to every new episode... Best wishes for coming year.
I love this time of year and your annual “Stump Speeches” because you truly deserve the incredible success. We appreciate it all and thank you as always, -CY Castor
I found you when I started repairing and refinishing furniture. Humor is fine but I really appreciate the calm, clear information. When I need a little knowledge about a tool or technique, you're one of the you-tubers I check out first. You're one of my trusted sources, and I appreciate your work!
I've been with you for a good part of the journey James and I can honestly say I've enjoyed all the iterations the channel has gone through. Just keep the videos coming and a whole lot of us will be happy. Thanks for what you do.
I stumbled upon your site a few years ago & immediately subscribed. Although I have 40 years in professional woodworking, I have never felt that my skills would ever match my love for the design & building of projects. Being a big fan of Red Green, your original concept of humor infused education looked to be a great starting point. How you & your site have evolved speaks volumes of your love of the craft & appreciation for your audience. Thank You!
I just found your channel within the last couple weeks and can't get enough, I'm learning a lot of stuff I thought I already knew. The early videos you put in here reminded me of "The Red Green Show" back in the day, keep doing what you are doing I'm thoroughly entertained and intrigued at what you will show me next.
I love the Red Green Show too, especially Handyman Corner..... Uncle Red always did some AMAZING builds!! And remember to "Keep Your Stick on the Ice" and also......."If the women don't find you handsome, at least they might find you handy!"
I always thought the Stump Nubs character and show were loosely based on the Canadian show The Red Green Show. I personally enjoyed both Red Green and Stumpy Nubs but understand the change. I'm certainly not saying the new show is bad, quite the contrary but I do miss some of the off the wall humor. Thank you for ALL the videos you create.
I came to this channel because some lady commented elsewhere on youtube: if it is good enough for James, it is good enough for everyone. So I joined out of curiosity and stayed. I really do enjoy the videos and hope for a lot more. And I am so happy that James' hand is doing well again. All the best!
Ya know, how flushed out your characters were, the town nobody knows about, they may seems inaccessible to those out of the know, but it really makes you feel like you're going into another world, being invited in almost. It's got a bit of a magical feel to it. Either way, glad you're doing what ya love.
Stumpy. I love the humor and the old gags. People need to lighten up a bit. I am a Downeaster so that may explain why I get you. Also I have learned a great deal for your instructional. Thank you. The Hiking Woodwoorker
I've been with you for most of your journey James and I've enjoyed both the past the new channel. Please keep videos coming and a lot of us will be happy. Thanks for what you do and am looking forward to the next 10 years.
I’ve come along late, and always wondered about the “Stumpy Nubs” backstory. Thank you so much, James, for supplying the back story since the beginning of your journey. Enjoyed it immensely! And thank you for all the knowledge you’ve shared over the years.
I have been around for a long time. And it was the old format, the humor, that got to me. You were one of my first subs if not my very first. As you changed, I missed it but loved the new format as well and still come back. Have yourself a cold one my friend you deserved it.
Congrats on your 10 years of success! Stumpy, no matter the iteration, is an inspiration in so many ways! Love ya bud, thanks for being awesome all these years!
I've been a subscriber to your channel for a few years now, but not since the beginning, so I enjoyed the trip down memory lane. Your content has gotten more and more professional, even during the time I've been watching. I can't tell you how much I've learned from you that has helped me along in my relatively short time woodworking. This channel, along with a few others, have made it possible for me to take up this great hobby relatively late in life and make some things that my family and friends really love. And your safety videos are priceless. This is no joke: right after watching your video on having and stocking a first aid kit in your shop, I literally got online and ordered most of the same first aid gear for my own little shop - right down to the same cabinet. I'm looking forward to continuing to learn from you and make useful and beautiful things in my shop for as long as I am able. Thanks, James. I really appreciate your contribution to the woodworking community. Happy New Year!
Thank you James, that answered a few questions. Congratulations on your 10 years on TH-cam and thank you for the valuable tips, sound advice and great entertainment. Here's to the next 10 years.
35 years on the construction job site has made me appreciate your brand of humor and im kinda sad to see it go, however, your brand of woodworking knowledge is equally appreciated.
As much as I enjoy the newer content , I will always miss those older episodes. I thought those earlier shows were a lot of fun . Congrats on 10 years!
We all grow up. I’ve been with you for the duration. I liked the sophomoric humor, which did not always conceal the underlying wit. Lately I’ve gobbled up your teaching material and learned much. We need you. Keep it up.
So touching, and a very cool back story! Your willingness to grow and evolve with your channel undoubtedly saved your channel. The one change I’m especially thankful for is your camera and lighting quality 🤣
Not sure how long I have been watching, but I have enjoyed all of the segments upgrades and changes. We run a custom shop and I recommend you to customers who are just getting into woodworking. Although I have always planned on teaching as part of the income along with running the shop more often I just give away information for the joy of talking woodworking with someone new.
Congratulations on your first of many decades! I enjoy the snot out of your channel, especially the older ones! You and your crew have done amazing things for our sawdust addiction!
I've only known you for about a year now and it was cool to see how you began, nothing happens over night and yet you stuck with it and how you're here helping millions of people. I love everything about your channel. Keep it up I look forward to each video.
I found you channel a couple years ago, and have been watching ever since. I have gone back in the deep dark archives of the Stumpy Nubs video vault, and watch a bunch of the older videos. I have found them entertaining, and informative. Both reasons to keep watching. I can see why things have changed over the years. Keep em coming, I enjoy learning from your videos.
Good going Stumpy!! I have traveled along with you the past decade James, and it has been, and still is, a great ride. All things evolve, and I think it is meant to be like that. All the way from participating in your woodworking jig contest in June 2012 to the format of 2022. Happy New Year Sir, and tell Mr. M.M that he needs to pay your shop a visit soon:)
Perfect video! This 74 year old has learned a lot for your videos. I appreciate your honesty and the facts you provide. Woodworking to me is fun and I am enjoying more because I have learned so much from you. THANK YOU James.
@@J.A.Smith2397 Yes, you are so right. It’s somewhat overwhelming but I’m taking it slow in watching the videos. They are like talking, or rather listening to a friend.
I can't remember for sure but I do believe this is the first comment I've ever left on your channel. I would like to say I have followed your channel from day 1 (or at least pretty darn close to day 1) and have always loved it in all of the formats. I had originally found your channel and Matthias Wendell website while trying to find a means of making a burr puzzle to impress a girl i had started dating. Now a decade later I married that girl, went from not knowing much about fine woodworking to having a successful home remodeling company and doing custom fabrication and replicating parts for historic renovations out of a 12k sqft converted aircraft hanger. Never underestimate the impact you can have on someone just by being a little less polished and a little more relatable. You may think your earlier videos are cringy but to me they introduced me into something I only saw a massive barrier to before. I look forward to the future of your channel and what is to come that i can learn from you. Also i still haven't ever made a burr puzzle so maybe if you made a video on that ... 🤔
I would love to see your woodworking news brought back with all your offbeat humor in a separate series if you would enjoy making more funny videos. I do also love the channel I found this last year with so much calming and informative content. Happy New Year!
I came to your channel a few years ago. I subscribe to your channel and watch it regularly because of your calm, clear manner of speech, rational, logical presentations, professional level video and lighting, and the great content. I would never have continued to watch you had I been there at the beginning, as the smarmy sarcasm and humor of the early years would not be my cup of tea.
Happy New Year, James! I value your new content more - you're honestly one of the best educators on the platform - but the old videos were a lot of fun!
A white oak feel in my yard 3 years ago. April Wilkerson channel showed me how cool it would be to Mill my own lumber instead of paying to turn into firewood. You then showed me that I could actually make amazing things with that lumber. You've added a whole new part of enjoyment to my life that I didn't have before, thanks stumpy
I've seen a few of the original "Stumpy Nubs" and they were entertaining. As the years have progressed, I've noticed your demeanor has shifted more towards safety (especially after that horrible accident with the carver/angle grinder). While your original content was just entertainment....as you put it....it still inspired me to start woodworking. :)
Don't worry Jim, you'll grow into those looks! Funny, informative, entertaining or just plain 'serious for a minute' - Your clear, concise, honest approach has drawn me into your workshop. You've been a major player in bringing about a new found interest in woodworking, that I'd dropped in school in favour of Art class, back in 1974. I may never cut mitres like Jon Peters - or fabricate whole workshops full of....er....everything imaginable like DiResta but I'll always be there listening to your advice in the hope of getting just a little bit better one video at a time. Tell Stumpy, Happy New Year and thank him for starting this marvelous channel, and of course a Happy New Year to all his joyfull workers as you continue to make sawdust.
I had shop class in 7th and 8th grade back in the early 90's. We also used the school shop in boy scouts before that. Great memories and lots of learning. Can't believe it's not part of the standard education in this country anymore.
As someone who only discovered your channel a few years ago, this trip down memory lane was a great way to learn more of the back story. Fun to see your journey. I’ve watched an awful lot of your videos but am now looking forward to going back and watching some of those very early ones.
Your channel has become a mainstay in my growth as a woodworker. I enjoy the humor but a find your teaching and sharing of knowledge to be of great help. Keep up the good work and let's have a marvelous next decade.
James (great name), I’ve seen some of your older videos, and while I didn’t learn much about woodworking from them, I did have plenty of laugh out loud moments…and that’s a good thing. Keep it up because as they say in theater: “The show must go on.”
you are a wonderful educator. I work as a cabinetmaker but I was never educated in woodworking. Your videos are incredibly useful in my daily work. Thank you for making these videos and please continue doing so.
Congrats on 10 years! Sorry I missed the first 5 or so; some of that looks like it was pretty funny. I look forward to every new video you make now and watch it as soon as the notification pops up. Even as a fairly experienced woodworker who has graduated from making cabinets and such to what can be called by many as "fine furniture", I still learn something useful nearly every time.
Those first years are still available. Just click on "Stumpy Nubs" under one of his videos. Then click on "videos" and the whole series will be available.
I love both James and Stumpy!!!!!! I love watching the old shows.....They were great!!!!! Bring out Stumpy every once in a while.....We'd love it!!!!!! And congrats on 10 years!!!! And Thanks for ALL you do!!!
I've only been following you for the past couple of years. You see, I retired and that's when I gained the time for woodworking and youtube videos. Congratulations on 10 years. That is an accomplishment you should be very proud of. I enjoy your style. And god knows, I've learned a ton. Keep on keepin' on.
Enjoyed that immensely It is the mark of a great mind to be able to look back at your own past and make no excuses but to point out the growth that made you you, Well done. by the way your Dad was funny than you haha Always looking forward to your content Congrats on 10 years
As a new subscriber, I found you recently because of an interest in woodworking. I would have loved the mix of humor and projects in your old days. Reminds me of a more serious and practical Red Green show.
I've been watching for as long as I've had a fancy phone that accommodates it, about three or so years I guess. I was hooked from the get go. I've learned tons and enjoyed every bit of it. I also appreciate the silliness, as I'm a little silly myself. Cheers to many, many more years of Stumpy Nubs!
I remember you joining Lumberjocks many years ago and was a follower from the beginning. Loved Stumpy fireside chats but the channel is even better now! Congratulations!!
James, it’s amazing to get this retrospective with your thoughts. The contrast between your older and newer videos has been something I’ve noticed on many occasions! You have done so much here and come a really long way. I hope you are proud. And thank you.
Congrats James/Stumpy! You have been an inspiration to me. I am nearly 75, but I am gonna have to stick around for at least another 10-years to watch you develop!
I never knew the early version of Stumpy Nubs existed. Honestly, I probably wouldn't have subscribed, though I may have still been amused. I really like the polite and gentle Stumpy Nubs who's always giving out advice with the tempered confidence and open-mindedness that seems to come from being very far past the first peak of the Dunning-Kruger graph. That's the kind of stuff I need for the next couple years as I make the transitions from a dude who builds houses for a living to a dad with a desk job and a hobbyist woodworking shop.
10 years... how time flies. Congrats. I haven't been along for that long but I do enjoy your educational videos. Throwing in a back handed joke now and then won't hurt too many peoples feelings. Than again too many get chapped over the smallest issue any more. Better keep it to woodworking and I hope to meet you in person some day. Keep up the great work.
I am a recent viewer of your show. Although I haven't gone back to view you old shows, I think I would really enjoy your humor. As a young man I did a little wood work and really enjoyed the touch, feel and smell of wood. But as often happens life got in the way. So now in the autumn of my life I found your videos and they have sparked a new interest in the hobby. Only problem is keeping the receipts from my wife. Thank you for providing the content that is not only enjoyable, but highly informative as well.
Add as much comedy as you feel like. Congrats on the ten years. I haven’t been there from the beginning, but I’ve learned a lot since I started and loving it.
Thank you for this, it is nice to watch. I've been an amateur woodworker for about seven or eight years now, and I only recently discovered your channel, maybe 6 months ago. Because of your straightforward, yet fantastically information rich style, it immediately became one of my TH-cam favorites. Thank you for all of the time and effort you put into your channel.
Just adding my personal thanks for all your content. I appreciate the bite size videos at the daily post rate. arguably the most useful and informational woodworking tips on TH-cam. You have made me a better woodworker.
I've been enjoying you for years and it's been a pleasure to see you evolve over the years. I do miss humorous older style videos but I also appreciate the new ones too. Congratulations and thank you for the last 10 years!
1st YT video i have looked at for 2022, been watching your channel over the past 5yrs, congrats & keep making videos ..... viewing from Trinidad in the Caribbean
Congrats, and thank you for everything you have given us in the past decade! I, for one, miss the instructions to have a cold one - I often think I've earned it, but nobody acknowledges it anymore!
What an awesome trip down memory lane. I actually grabbed a few takeaways: First, you are incredibly blessed to have had your dad along for this journey. I hope you cherish every moment with him, and tell him you love him every chance you get. Second, I kinda like the goofy Stumpy Nubs, and James Hamilton is a pretty great guy too. I hope some day I get to meet them both. Finally, and most importantly... I need a shop chicken.
Inspirational! Man. Been a viewer for two years. Never saw this old stuff. I'd love to hear how many times you almost gave up. Incredible, and thank you!
Most Canadian viewers, I’m sure, will appreciate that original attitude, as it would fit right into any episode of the Red Green show (well, maybe he’d think you were far too serious, and that your projects don’t use enough duct tape). I’ve watched your first episode now, and will spend the winter catching up. Loved it!
I am rather new to the Stumpy Nubs , whish I had got on to this sooner. However, after being in wood working for many years I have learned much from your channel an appreciate the clear easy explained nuances of wood working as as well tutorials with added reminders for safety and referrals to wood working tools. look forward tomany more. Thank You!
I still occasionally see comments on your videos like, "Do you ever actually build anything?". Some people still don't understand this is an educational channel. There are lots of great channels doing build videos. Stumpy Nubs is the best doing woodworking education. From technique to tips to history, you cover it all. Congratulations on 10 years and looking forward to many more.
I wasn’t in at the beginning but discovered you shortly after. In Ireland most of the humour was lost on me. But thankfully I stuck with it and I have no regrets. I look forward to each new video. Thank you.
Your channel is one of my earliest subs along with WMM (Steve Ramsey) and Jay Bates back in the good old days of non-commercial YT. Learned a lot, laughed at many but always enjoyed the content. I am a retired Ph.D. engineer and a self-proclaimed DIY addict. Yet I have upped my game from watching young pros like you and others. Hope you continue to put out useful and unique content for many more years. A fan in NC
I started watching you and your dad and just loved the banter between you both I had little interest or knowledge about woodwork back then but you both made it look fun and interesting and because of that there is now a little workshop on the edge of the forest in Hamshire UK which I spend far too much time in, and when I need to learn something your Chanel has always been my most trusted resource, glad you have a got a large audience now and may you keep on growing . Thank you for all that you do
Been following you for a very long time and happily so. Have to say that among a lot of very smart TH-cam woodworkers I find your content among the best out there! You not only bring up very good and helpful tips and content, you also explain it in a way we all can understand and even recognize ourselves in. Here’s for the next ten years…..Ten thumbs up!
You are a credit to the craft, easy to understand, therefore easy to assimilate the education you're giving, and have made me better, which wasn't exactly easy! Thanks and God bless!

James, would it be possible to link some of the old Stumpy Nubs videos that you referenced or showed clips from?
I spent over an hour list night trying to find out why you were scoring lines in the side of a hand plane, with a hacksaw.

Jim, I have been a contractor and woodworker for 50 Years this spring. I love both you knowledge and your humor. I love both and think your great.
remember not to chase analytics forever. the creativity that drove stumpy nubs is at the heart of what makes your videos enjoyable to watch.
Been wondering about the origin of “Stumpy Nubs” grateful for the detailed exposition - and a pleasure to see the highlights from past years! Thanks so much.
Don't ever say you're boring. The skill you have as an educator is priceless
I want to know what happened to Mustache Mike....
Dude, you are never boring...I come to your channel to learn.
Thanks!
I am also without an interest in doing woodworking, don't have the space to if I was interested, but watch because I like learning about things.
@@MonkeyJedi99 exactly why I subbed. Some of this is just nice to know
spot on
> i'm a new viewer with no real interest in wood working
> this channel provides so much useful info like that flat nail point thing
If you have no interest in woodworking, how could that information possibly be described as "useful" to you?
Big hugs, Stumpy. You're the woodworking dad/brother/uncle the internet needs. I hope your next ten years are as fulfilling as the last ten.
We appreciate it all and thank you as always,
-CY Castor
Oh I loved the red green show!
I love the Red Green Show too, especially Handyman Corner..... Uncle Red always did some AMAZING builds!! And remember to "Keep Your Stick on the Ice" and also......."If the women don't find you handsome, at least they might find you handy!"
It is amazing how TH-cam has gone from just fun videos to actually learning woodwork from great woodworkers like yourself. Take care
Ditto. Well said.
Yeah, definitely get the red green vib
Same an actual useful Red Green show. It was fun.
I came to this channel because some lady commented elsewhere on youtube:
if it is good enough for James, it is good enough for everyone.
On the other hand, his characters probably were not enthused about getting flushed out... 😀
Stumpy. I love the humor and the old gags. People need to lighten up a bit. I am a Downeaster so that may explain why I get you. Also I have learned a great deal for your instructional. Thank you. The Hiking Woodwoorker
Edutainment is what I came for and why I stayed. Thanks!
I loved the old stumpy and also the new stumpy. Gonna have to go back and re-watch all the old stuff and reminisce.
Don't forget the improved audio :)
As a viewer from day one....I've enjoyed all the different "characters", including the real you. Congrats on 10 years.
Wow! I had no idea. I’m a new subscriber so this is all new to me. However I love your content. Honest and real! Love it. Thanks for all you do!
He's got lots of content/tips/tricks/ideas! Been watching for yrs now
@@J.A.Smith2397 Yes, you are so right.
Congrats on 10 years James. Your videos got me into the craft. Changed my life. Thank you so much.
Thanks a LOT for everything you've been doing since the beginning, James! 😊
Happy new year! And stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks for a great 10 years. You and Marc Spag were a great help getting me back into the shop.
Happy New Year..Love this channel
I miss Mustache Mike
I've been watching for as long as I've had a fancy phone that accommodates it, about three or so years I guess. I was hooked from the get go. I've learned tons and enjoyed every bit of it. I also appreciate the silliness, as I'm a little silly myself.
Cheers to many, many more years of Stumpy Nubs!
Priceless... and the best is yet to come! For the time being, I wish you and the SN family a great, productive year of 22. Big hug!
I remember you joining Lumberjocks many years ago and was a follower from the beginning. Loved Stumpy fireside chats but the channel is even better now! Congratulations!!
Love those old videos! Congratulations for 10 years - that's almost an eternity on YT.
Man. May we all be blessed to visibly age as little as you have this last decade.
The title of the video stop my heart for a second. I love your channel.
I actually grabbed a few takeaways:
First, you are incredibly blessed to have had your dad along for this journey.
Thank You!
Love your humor, love your woodworking. You got a great package. Thank you...
Exactly!
A fan in NC
I'm new and you have taught me more than any other channel. I think you are funny and DEFINITELY entertaining. Here's to (hopefully) another 10 years.
Thanks for your service and education! Loved hearing the origin of your beginning. Fabulous!!
Great trip down memory lane. I always like the bits of humor thrown in with the serious education. Works well.
