    Unfortunately no. I like to think of fixative as a "new layer" in photoshop. You can add things on top of what you already have but you cannot change anything that is underneath at all.

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  11 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    It really depends on what you are going to use the paper for. Keep in mind that drawing paper is acid free which will help from the paper eating away at itself later in the years. By adding something very acidic to the paper, you will really shorten the life span of it. I am not sure by how much though.

  • @allbecauseican

    So using the final fixative (the second one), if you run your finger or hand over them they don't smudge at all?? I have a bunch of Charcoal drawings that I want to be protected, but I'm really worried about the effectiveness of a fixative.

    'no brand' hair spray = good cheap fixative. Never had it turn yellow even after decades

    We use hairspray at our school and it works just fine. No colors at all. We use it on oil pastel, charcoal, chalk. Pretty much everything

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  11 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I am sure the scented hairspray requires a lot more chemicals which may have a reaction that turns the paper yellow. This is why I am very hesitant about using hairspray. I would rather just pay the 5-6 bucks for the can of fixative and use that haha. But I like how you tested them out. That is something that I always recommend that way nothing of value is ruined. Thanks for sharing!

  • @TylersArtShack

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I honestly haven't filled a sketch book yet. I will usually go halfway and then just sort of transition into another one. Not sure why it is but it is just the way things go haha. I am also not sure if I could bring myself to selling it. I like to see the progress that took place over the years.

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Oil pastels take a long time to dry out because of the wax in them which is the reason why they made the fixative. It will create a protective shell on top of the oil pastel to help protect it. Over time though, the oil pastel will dry out.

    I don't usually advertise the price of what I have because they are always different depending on where in the world someone is as well as sale prices and whatnot. I also don't remember the prices that I pay for them haha. I have a few videos on my channel that explain most of the supplies that I will use. I also have some tutorials on how to use them as well.

  • @TylersArtShack

    A portfolio type book will probably be best. It will both protect it and keep it looking professional. If you are in LA, you should have access to 2 Blick Art Material stores. I have been to one of them when I was out there over the summer. I know the traffic and parking around that area isn't fun haha. Online places like ebay will also have a lot of the supplies.

    I tend to erase a lot in my drawings. If I use a fixative and, let's say for example end up drawing and erasing over 80-90% of it, will the fixative screw up or damage the drawing?
    I never am able to finish a drawing in a day, no matter now small.

    • @princesssilke
      @princesssilke ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why not wait .. ‘til you are finished? - A great Drawing may take more than 1 day… it’s never the time .. itself, yet the constant exclusive Attention what is requested to draw nicely!

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know exactly what you are talking about. I used to use my hand to brush off the excess graphite shavings and that would just smear them all over! Try using a fan brush for that. It quickly and effectively gets rid of them without having them smearing everything.

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Absolutely. Sometimes you just have to use whatever you can to get your ideas down. You could always get some ink markers or something but what you are using should be just fine.

  • @TylersArtShack
    @TylersArtShack  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I really haven't gotten around to using them that much at all because there is so much prep and clean up involved. Then you also have to consider a schedule for painting so that your paint doesn't dry up. With my current schedule, I just haven't been able to get back into it. It is fun, but they are difficult to use. I prefer pencil so much more.

  • @TylersArtShack

    I haven't. I have used Krylon, Winsor and Newton, and Grumbacher brands. I like to stick to the art name brands since they make the drawing mediums that the spray will be used on so the quality is probably better.

    hi there, thanks so much for this short, clear and precious piece of advice. exaclty what i was looking for after hours of scanning through the internet and among forums to try to understand the truth behind hairspray.
    one question, please. I bought a Clear Coat Gloss from Belton Molotov spray can. I agree with you, the gloss is just annoying, it makes the drawing basically visible only from the very front, like a cheap laptop screen! question is: have you ever used the Matte of the same brand?

    AquaNet unscented hairspray works well with chalk. I haven't used with pencil yet. I've used it for pastels and haven't noticed any color changes. The chalk work I used it for has lasted for close to 40 years without change. It is also probably the cheapest hair spray I have found. Make sure you use unscented.

  • @TylersArtShack

    I would be careful with it. Like I mentioned in the video, I had a very bad experience with it and I will never use it again because I really care about my work and don't want it to get ruined. If you are trying to preserve something that you would consider worth saving, I would invest the extra money to get something that is made for preserving a drawing. That is just me though.

    I don't use that brand of workable fixative, but with mine, and with most of them, I think, one coat lets you keep working on the drawing, and a second coat seals it without doing any harm. Hairspray is NOT a good alternative, and the better the paper, the more damage hairspray can do over time.

    I saw something about using clear water and brushing against the drawing with it. Does anyone know if it will work?

    hey i wanted to ask how do you prevent smearing while still working on the drawing.
    Like i am a lefthandy. As i progress from left to right the lead smudges .
    i know i can keep a paper underneath. But is there any other solution or a tool that can help me prevent this?

      There are gloves that people who work with drawing tablets use. It varies, some wrap around just the pinky finger and some wrap around both the pinky and ring finger. Here’s one I found with a quick google search:
