      @@alphax4785 By "thoroughly", I meant more "not missing a spot" than "kill it with nuclear hellfire". Cleaning it with bleach while wearing gloves to avoid accidental contact, that sorta thing. You don't wanna take any chances, with rabies. I'd probably even go so far as to get a rabies shot after doing the cleanup, but I admit I'm probably being a bit over the top there.

    This is so sad. Brings back a terrifying memory of biking with my little brother in the cul de sac of our grandparents home and hearing this weird noise. We turned around and it was a Fox frothing at the mouth and running towards us. We took off biking as fast as we could towards our grandparents house but we were a little ways away. We started screaming and I remember my mom and grandparents coming out onto the porch and watching helplessly as we biked with this rabid fox on our tail. He was biting my brothers back tire, he was so close. We biked right up to the edge of the porch and dove on it while my grandfather threw a flower pot at the Fox to distract it. It attacked my brothers bike like crazy as they dragged us inside. They called fish and game and they came and shot the Fox and then said they found a whole litter of rabid Fox babies in the woods right nearby that also sadly had to be exterminated. Will never forget that! Rabies is messed up. I also encountered a rabid moose just a year or two later (thankfully was inside a K mart at the time) and it was stomping cars in the parking lot and hit its horns against the glass window of the entrance. Am I the only one with weird rabid animal stories? Lol

      Why were your parents/grandparents watching “helplessly”? Were they injured or disabled or something?
      Those moose are batshit crazy even when they’re not rabid too! The things you described about the moose are things that they do normally, so I couldn’t imagine seeing one do it when it was rabid!! I bet that was a CRAZY sight to see firsthand! You’re lucky that the crazy bastard didn’t manage to get inside the K-Mart you were in bc that would’ve really been a shit show!😂

      No, I grew up on a farm...when I was 9 I was riding my pony along our usual trail. Out of nowhere a fox came charging out of the woods. It chased us the whole way home. We galloped as fast as my little pony could to the barn, but it was still on us. We just kept going and I kept screaming for help. Finally, after riding past the kitchen window and screaming. My uncle came outside with a gun. He was able to distract the tired fox and shoot it. Thank goodness my pony didn't throw me or tire out before that crazy fox.

      I remember when i was younger, before i could drive, i had to do a bit of walking getting around and being where i was... it meant some long dark streets with no lights and no houses, barely any cars went by.
      I told people that it made me nervous, and they'd say I'm ridiculous there's nothing there at night that isn't there during the day. It wasn't the animals that concerned me though, it was the possibility of rabies.
      And actually, i have experienced a few rabid animals throughout my life. The first time i was really young, i was playing out in this field next to my house when i noticed this racoon came walking over towards me looking a little staggered and confused. I knew that it meant keep away and tell someone so i did. And it did turn out to be rabid when they tested it.
      Fortunately it's been dumb rabied each time, because a friend of mine said he was out in these woods, when an aggressive rabid racoon came at him. He said he went up on this big rock out there and waited for someone to hear him. Whole time this thing was falling over snarling at him having seizures, it definitely makes you aware of careful you need to be.
      And growing up in the 80s i didn't even understand just exactly how deadly it was. I was mostly afraid of getting a bunch of shots in the stomach and being sick. It's much more severe than just 'sick'. And the treatment is easier today, it's really the cost of the medicine that hurts now.

      Rabies is a horrible and terrifying disease. It's 100% fatal, and it's AGONIZINGLY painful. You're dying of thirst, but water is excruciatingly painful and you can't drink it. You're wracked by a high fever, your whole body hurts like you're being electrocuted. That's why animals bite things and behave aggressively. Humans do the exact same thing when infected. It's so cruel. Get your animals vaccinated.

We pulled into her driveway and she was about to get out of the car when we all saw a raccoon behaving bizarrely on her front lawn. It was stumbling around, falling over and twitching, then getting up, stumbling around some more, and falling over again, etc. We called 911 and shortly afterward, a police cruiser pulled up. One officer wanted to catch the raccoon by hand, until I rolled down my window and said to him, “I don’t think that’s a very good idea….looks like that thing is rabid.” He retreated to his car and I guess called for backup, because a short while after that, a police van pulled up and another officer armed with a rifle got out and shot the raccoon. Our friend said she was glad she hadn’t left her dog tied up outside when she came to visit us that evening. BTW this happened in Kirkland Lake, Ontario.

      I've never seen an animal with rabies here, I don't think it is usual, and I've never seen stray dogs, there probably are some in big cities like Barcelona with all its delinquency, so between all the drug addicts and gangs in some places there would probably be sickly stray animals. On my town the most I've seen is stray cats that usually live in a group in a certain place. In the villages pets usually go around free, but villages are pretty much in the middle of nowhere, so idk how easy would be for rabies to get there .
      Edit: Ok I just looked it up and we've been free from rabies since 1978 on terrestrial carnivores, so that dog was probably just kinda quirky or stressed. However some bats have presented rabies in Valencia after that, but as far as it is knows not dogs, and the vulpine variant never crossed the pyrenees even though we have foxes here. The present cases in other animals aside from bats are mostlt from Ceuta and Melilla, two cities of Spain in Africa, and it comes from Morocco.

I’ve seen many humans who were infected and the 99.9+ fatality rate should scare anyone of the possible mutations or weaponisation of this most terrifying virus.

      Not sure if this is rabies or just a fox enamored with encountering a glass window for the first time. I say that as I did see a video with a fox with rabies. It kept throwing it's head far back, like it was trying to get its tongue to touch it's back, without turning its head. It was having seizures and frothing at the mouth and was just...sad. One of the guys filming it eventually said, "I'll go get my gun." That's pretty much all you can do at that point, put it out of its misery. Then again, maybe that was late-stage rabies and this is early stage, but this one seemed in its right mind enough to scratch at the door just like a dog would and just didn't understand the concept of a glass door.

      When the virus first enters the brain, it causes varoius behavioural changes that help it to spread. It then spreads down to the saliva glands, where it causes excessive production of saliva - infected with the virus.
      It also causes a fear of water and a reflex action that causes the throat to close if the host attempts to drink. This prevents dilution of the virus.
      The virus has control of the brain, just before the brain is completely destroyed.
      It is a nightmare of a disease where the simplest organism of all (not even life really) gains control of the most complex object in the known universe.

    Rabies is literally so scary in real life but I feel like it's one of those fears that are kind of normalized by media. Like you see it as a common disease in cartoons and movies and shit so it kinda desensitizes people to the actual danger of it in real life. Once you get it, that's pretty much GG for you, almost a 100% mortality rate for anything that shows symptoms. Some real life zombie shit.

      @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +97

      @@SharKwORDT95 You can be vaccinated before getting rabies. If you've ever owned a cat or dog, you get them vaccinated initially every year but most states in the U.S. have now extended it to about every two or three years. I was bitten by a stray puppy as a child and for safety, was taken to a hospital to receive a vaccine in case the puppy was rabid. You don't wait until you have a disease to begin vaccinating against it, you get a vaccine to avoid catching it or to make its symptoms less severe if you do.
      So, as such, you can vaccinate the wildlife to help avoid them from catching rabies. There are countries that are considered to be rabies-free due to this and bringing pets in from other countries that are not rabies-free can be very difficult.

    • @SharKwORDT95
      @SharKwORDT95 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Beware the Lily of the Valley ok, I see what you mean, but the places considered rabies free are islands that are a fraction of the U.S. as a whole. Vaccination of wildlife at a level to eradicate rabies completely is not feasible because of how it spreads. Once it infects an animal for too long that’s not something that can be undone, and it becomes a walking conduit of rabies. Especially with the variety of animals that can transmit it on the continent. We’ll have an easier time eradicating mosquitoes with that genetically altered strain that can’t reproduce. It’s like a zombie virus only instead of being hyper aggressive the animal suffers seizures and gets the animal equivalent of dementia.

The first written record of rabies is in the Mesopotamian Codex of Eshnunna (circa 1930 BC), which dictates that the owner of a dog showing symptoms of rabies should take preventive measures against bites. The most recent common ancestor (MRCA) of all coronaviruses is estimated to have existed as recently as 8000 BCE, although some models place the common ancestor as far back as 55 million years or more, implying long term coevolution with bat and avian species.

    The virus hijacks the nervous system, causing sensitivity and rage in furious rabies. It causes excessive salivation, pain and paralysis of the muscles used to swallow. The fear of water is associated with this dreadful pain, and leaves rabies infected saliva all over the mouth. It's how the disease perpetuates its survival, via a newly bitten and infected victim.
    Universally fatal viruses have to work hard not to die out, as all the hosts succumb. This strategy is horrifying, monstrous, dreadful and sadly effective as a means of transmission.

    Some of the more "realistic" zombie movies out there choose not to go the whole "reanimating the literal dead" route (which is physically impossible) and instead center their plots around a rabies-like disease which turns people into mindless, aggressive maniacs (which, while still highly improbable, is not out of the realm of possibility for a future pandemic). One look at this fox and it's easy to see where they got their inspiration.

      One of my favorite iterations of zombies are the fungal zombies from the Last of Us games. There’s a kind of fungus that does something similar to ants so it’s probably one of the most realistic ways that someone could become a zombie.
      Edit: I like the zombies from Resident Evil as well. Res 2 remake in particular.
