    I worked out a main reason I look forward to your videos so much. Your actual content and photos are amazing, of course...but it's how you present everything more as a chat than something more formal. Like you could've cut out the part about the dynamism of the waves, and it seems like you decided midstream that you were going to show photos on the iPad (rather than the prints you had ready to show). I really appreciate your effort to pull us in as if you're talking directly to us, rather than posting a video on a massive social media platform.

    I live in a coastal town in East Yorkshire so these are some great tips for me. We have many caves and sea stacks so thankyou for these. You've motivated me to get back out shooting these. Sounds silly but I guess you get tired of shooting what's on your doorstep, but now I want to get back out!

Some family members mentioned some kind of improvement in my photos but I am still frustrated not getting the shots I would like. 4:55 - you got to underexpose it by two stops, you say. That is a handy heuristic to begin with. I would approach this differently, though. You need a very sturdy tripod and head for that (it looks like yours are good enough). The composition you are looking for is in the same "frame" - the imaginative one in reality - all the time and that is also a requirement. Or, a tripod is no problem. So, let's use it and make it a solution.
    To begin with, I would shoot one shot on manual, inspecting histogram, and in the exposure setting "expose for the low lights". Depending on the aperture for the later shot, I would even consider focus stepping. This becomes the basis or stable layer in Photoshop, later on.
    Then I would set the camera to "A" and to "expose for the highlights" - which is not matrix, not spot, etc., but in the same menu. With that setting, your sensor's brightest photosite will determine exposure (sort of, the camera "knows" when the sun is in your frame and ignores that). This means the brightest whitest piece of banging waves will determine your "white point" and the automatic exposure cut off. You will not lose detail in the whites, that way. But, experience, your shots will look underexposed and turning up the lowlights may become difficult and is certainly limited. Hence the upfront shot or shots as foundation for the dark and static parts in the composition.
    Also note, the sensor is analog, that the camera in its analog to digital (AD) conversion may not work linearly, but may behave like film in the old days. If you remember densitometry curves from films (density as function of 10-base log i*t) then you also remember the "S" shape or "shoulders" that implied compression near the extremes of your film's dynamic range. Such a non-linear AD conversion may feel "normal" to humans but reduces detail in the dynamic range extremes and you can undo such compression in part by opening your shot as 32 bits in Photoshop.
    How much work it is in post, to stack two or more shots into one, depends on your Photoshop skills.

    • @jpdj2715
      @jpdj2715 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In addition, the video camera illustrates another point about shooting from tripod and using a remote control (with zero latency if possible) You know your frame with the tele lens. You do not need to look in the view finder but can use your naked eye to see what is brewing and will play out in your frame. See it coming, press. Like in the film days before motor drives and autofocus. Bang. One shot. OK, yeas, to be honest, I will do a few bursts too.

    Good tips nigel. I especially like the one about the underexposing the crashing wave and not being able to trust the wave pre-brake histogram because as a water goes up the histogram will change and the highlights will be blown out has the water catches the sun.

    Great tips! I've been doing a lot of seascapes lately, and your point about height (getting low compared to wave to heighten drama) is very well taken. Such a simple thing, but I'm sure will make a big difference. Re: shutter speed, I find half a sec a bit slow for my taste. The waves get too creamy and lack definition. A quarter or even a tenth seems to work for me. But highly subjective, of course! Thanks man--you do a great job of NOT resting on your laurels. I find consistently helpful tips on your videos, and also much enjoy your quality videography. Really nice setups and shooting.
