Hi …So nice of you to have made this comparison. So I recently got the T8 as my first drum machine. I am a guitarist trying to create a lofi jazz music (where previously I will take drums samples from splice and then compose jazz chords and solo on top of it). I wanted to get away from the DAW and got this box. I also have the SP404MK2. I played around with the T8 for a day learning and creating and within 24 hours I felt I could not use this for my regular music production because the sounds felt very acid/techno focussed. I was trying to create jazz and bossanova drum patterns. Also, I felt I can’t time-stretch the same note say over the (e,&,a) like I could on a DAW. I was struggling to understand how to do this and could not find a way. It felt like each beat tightly snaps to the pads and they can’t be extended or clubbed. If I want the same best on both 1 and e, and I place them on both then they are separate best and not the same beat over both of them. Which makes the beats very rigid. I tried decay and ascent on the notes but they are not able to solve the problem. Was there something I missed here? Anyway, I have now scheduled a return for the T8 because I felt limited with the sound. Instead I ordered, the volca drums and the volca sample 2, because I did not know which one will solve my problem (I will return one of them) I basically want to create rock/blues/jazz type on drums on this. Or even if that’s not fully possible, create beats which are not fully acid like the T8, but something where I can play ambient, post rock/indie rock type of guitar on top of it. Will you have any recommendations on how I should approach this ? And also among the T8, drum and sample2, which one will be the ideal one for me to pair with my sp404mk2 ? BTW, I had a lot of fun with the T8 for the 24 hours it was with me. I was pretty productive and also did a acid/techno ish live set :) So returning it felt bad in way. But I felt it was not going to help me create the type of sound I was chasing.
Finally you reviewed it, AIRA Compact lineup is legit "cheapest" electronic instruments in my country atm, also looking forward for the review of J-6 & E-4 too!
Built-in rechargeable battery is almost an automatic hard pass for me when it comes to most devices these days. The damn things stop holding a decent charge right around the time the manufacturer quits making a replacement battery and then you're left with something that needs to be plugged in to ever work again. Volcas use ordinary AA cells, nice and simple.
My Deluge at least uses a standard 18650 lithium ion battery, and is easy enough for the user to replace. That's the only way I'd want to go. I'm happy to bring a small battery pack for my Dreadbox Typhon rather than having a non-replaceable built-in battery.
My cousin bought a Pro VS Mini while I was in his town visiting friends. As it is his first synth and he is a drummer, he asked me to come over to show him some tips and record some stuff. Not wanting to show up without any instrument of my own, so I bought a Keystep 37 for him ("tip one, you need keys and a sequencer") and a T-8 so we had base and drums. I'm home again and looking for tips on the thing and find it's on here....shoulda known. Nice to hear the same words I said when I turned it on spoken here too: "it's Rebirth in a box!"
One thing to be said about the menu diving is that you can do tweaks through it while it is running. So far sidechaining the effects and BASS is probably my favourite feature considering how simple it is to do/the price range.
i was a few mouse clicks away from buying one of these.. then an old friend offered me a TB-3 for super cheap (barely an inconvenience) surprised to see this on BG so soon 🤔
The Tb-3 is definitely a misunderstood future gem. I was underwhelmed at first but then I got my head around the designers concept. It's not a 303 with an experimental interface . Its a 3 flavour monosynth - 303 , Bass synth and Synth (we will ignore the percussionish sounds) . Plug it in as stereo and the reverb/delay effects become transformed. The only thing missing that would have vastly help sell it is a motion sequencer.
If you can find one, I think the Oberheim OB-12 would be cool to see on the show! I've heard a lot of bad things about the instrument, but seems like something interesting might lurk below the surface and you are one of the few youtubers (along with Jexus) that could tame the sickly beast!
ya , good suggestion. I remember in the 90's you could get one for 200 bucks, and no one wanted them because of how publicized the problems were. now they are going for a shit ton of $$$ . I had a matrix 6 for a long time, and that is still my fav synth, even with the limitations.
On a budget the MC101 is my choice, even for just drums (comes with CR78 amongst others). This little box leaves you wanting, out of the box. As always, two or three of these affordable boxes buys you one keeper.
I actually like this instrument! I have the J-6 and it’s tons of fun. Linking the two together and being able to sketch chords, drums and bass lines on the couch seems fun. You can always easily route the midi out to other synths or VST’s later too if you want. The only thing holding me back from the T-8 is the drum selection…if they had just included a COUPLE more options for each drum hit….currently it’s a bit of a strange mish-mash. But I think it sounds pretty great, the built in 303 is cool to have and sidechaining, step-loop, fills, fx send amounts for each instrument, and being able to create polymeters simply by reducing the number of steps are all cool features
@ghost mall they buy it because it's good or people wouldn't buy it?!? It's a mini Acid drum machine, it's fecking awesome.. where else can I buy a mini Acid drum machine? Do tell, so I can buy it too
UNbelievable amount of menu diving, a fun but somewhat strange combination of sounds targeted at god only knows who. Whatever was left on the list that they hadn't done is how this box came about, that's might guess! HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!
Ouch! The Compact Airas haven't even been out for a year yet and they're already getting a Bad Gear eulogy. But hey! It's like that old saying "If you want to come for the Volcas, you better kill the Volcas."
Okay, I would -love- to hear a full / extended version of the finale jam here. This device sounds great! But yes, while extremely portable, it's far too small for my fingers to twiddle.
Your videos always bring knowledge and happiness into my life. Cant wait for all the bad gear to be reviewed so you can show us all the better gear! Cheers 🥳
Sounds good to me mate. Proper (but limited range of) Roland drum style sounds. Good review too. I think Roland still make awesome gear. This unit is very cheap and quite cool but the small size factor and the potential usb power/noise issues might limit it in some setups But look, If you want a unit with knob per function hands on tweaking you're gonna have to pay for it. Ipads etc ain't my scene but it seems to me that these volca/rolca/polca pieces of kit would all benefit from optional app interface accessabilty over bluetooth.
I think you nailed it on the head with your analysis. This is the kind of machine I would have wanted 10 years ago… it’s been a long time that people who care about hardware have moved on to either software for convenience or better more expensive machines (but also « better sounding »)… I still hope younger artists can discover the joy of hardware with those without breaking the bank. It sounds good.
for those live dawless jams, do you pick the other machines at random or what made you pick a dr rhythm for example in this episode? i like these weird combinations
The DR-110 is VERY similar to the TR-606 most of the T-8 drum hits are modelled after so I thought the crash would be a nice complement and also put a focus on the lack of cymbals on the T-8
I have the T-8 it's a very cool bit of kit, made much better once i added a set of trimmer toppers from THONK, much nicer to knob twiddle and color coded now! THE think i'd like to see would be pattern chaining at some point from a firmware update at some point in the future. overall i tihnk it's WAAAY more useful than any of my volcas... and the rechargeable battery is how it ought to be in 2022.
Good ol' Phil Rollins with special guests -The Henry- Collins Band. I seen those boys tear it up at the Korg Vs. Roland: Tic Tac Slam and Synths for Ants Extravaganza. Absolute legends.
I had all of them, kept the J-6 and the E-4 which are pure fun to play! Sold the T-8 which sounds good, but is too small for jamming. the Output connection ist too close to the CutOff control knob and the menu diving is quite boring.
@@markuskoivisto I guess if they put proper outputs but these little machines all have 3.5 jacks now anyway, I'm used to it at this price. For $200 I would be ordering this thing now if it had individual outs.
That's actually not that cheap to do. Relative to the rest of the cost of the unit. You're also going to run out of room on such a small device. Something like the TR-8S as a more professional unit of course has individual outs. There's also a management system for that which requires a display. I suppose you could do a very simplistic execution where the ports are switched and will pull an instrument out of the main mix if something's plugged in, but that also seems not ideal. You ideally want that on a patch by patch basis.
The cyclone beat bot has multiple outs, but there is some cross talk apparently, probably because everything is crammed so close together on the circuit board
Seeing other "reviews" of this thing, 3:55 totally surprised me and I almost want to get one. It sounds sooooo good. Why are other people afraid of turning knobs more than a mm??? ............. Great video, thanks! ;)

The t8 was my first hardware synth/drum machine. I mostly use it to make samples for my mpc and use it as a 303. With midi control is a dream to use.
Nice!!!
You'd be better off getting a Behringer TD3 and just finding free drum samples online. This is just a sample machine anyway
I do wish they included motion recording, or at the very least the ability to save your sound settings per pattern. That’s a real bummer
The lack of drum sound variation seems to be the biggest limitation
@ghost mall they buy it because it's good or people wouldn't buy it?!? It's a mini Acid drum machine, it's fecking awesome.. where else can I buy a mini Acid drum machine? Do tell, so I can buy it too
Damn... didn't realized I was so low level on the music Iceberg. Great video as always!
Thank you!!!
Lol. I was just jamming out with my T8 before I saw this video. Definitely a gateway drug to GAS.
Nice!!!
I've said it before and I'll keep on saying it, this is one of the best channels on this website. 😎😎👌👌
Thank you so much!!!
UNbelievable amount of menu diving, a fun but somewhat strange combination of sounds targeted at god only knows who. Whatever was left on the list that they hadn't done is how this box came about, that's might guess! HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!
Have a nice weekend!
Dude your gear videos are my favorite all-time, ever.... what's even more exciting is apparently there's other ppl who enjoy this too!?
Thank you!!!
Haha. As soon as these appeared I thought of Audiopilz. 😁👍
❤️❤️❤️
One of your best vids. Great jams, loved the 110 cymbal (you have one job!)
Thank you!!!
I love seeing the DR-110 brought out again! That was my first mini drum machine and I still use it - for everything but the kick, anyway.
Sounds really nice! Thinking of modding it...
@@AudioPilz - Go for it! Pitch and decay controls make it quite versatile, in a dirty electro sort of way.
Dude you're amazing. I'm always learning when I see you
Thank you so much!!!
Ouch! The Compact Airas haven't even been out for a year yet and they're already getting a Bad Gear eulogy. But hey! It's like that old saying "If you want to come for the Volcas, you better kill the Volcas."
They got most of the heat pre-release which is quite an achievement;)
Yet again you have inspired me.
I shall spend the evening drinking and jamming.
Way to go!
Sounds like a massive bang for buck. Good on you, Roland.
👍
The garnish section may be my favourite moment of your entire output. Carry on. 🤣
Thank you!!!
Jesus. If I was to take a shot for every time you release a video involving Roland I'd probably need a new liver.
Roland makes a lot of "good" but misunderstood stuff
Cheers;)
Roland makes new livers too but the don't have the crunch of their old livers.
@@johnmiddleton4291 hey we take what we can get also milk thistle helps rolands crunch a little harder like they used to
🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃
Thanks for making me appreciate my Elektron Model:Samples, Roland
;)
Okay, I would -love- to hear a full / extended version of the finale jam here.
This device sounds great! But yes, while extremely portable, it's far too small for my fingers to twiddle.
Thank you! Full tracks are available on Patreon (end of plug;)
Ou darn
Friday evening and Audiopilz video?
Now today is good because new jams
Have a nice weekend!!!😀
Your videos always bring knowledge and happiness into my life. Cant wait for all the bad gear to be reviewed so you can show us all the better gear! Cheers 🥳
So happy to hear that, thanks!
I think this is my favorite regular show on youtube now
Thank you!!!
welcome! I'm learning from your gear advice *and* your video editing
Oh yes. Another Roland! One that make you look like a giant too! Are you planning to review one of their accordion anytime soon? :P
I try to stay away from accordions;)
That video for final jam... you should use it for every final jam from now on. You've reached peak jam video quality, absolute top
Thank you so much!
Ot must be tough deciding wether you want to make a volca, a boutique or an Aira episode.
Yeah, the unholy trinity of Bad Gear;)
Another fabulous video. 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you!!!
Sounds good to me mate. Proper (but limited range of) Roland drum style sounds.
Good review too.
I think Roland still make awesome gear. This unit is very cheap and quite cool but the small size factor and the potential usb power/noise issues might limit it in some setups
But look, If you want a unit with knob per function hands on tweaking you're gonna have to pay for it.
Ipads etc ain't my scene but it seems to me that these volca/rolca/polca pieces of kit would all benefit from optional app interface accessabilty over bluetooth.
Thank you!!!
Very funny to now see AudioPilz as the name to drop when a straight-to-bad-gear piece of gear comes out.
I felt deeply honored;)
Got mine from Bax Music for £138 in p&p jan 2024....really crisp/clean sounds, 303 section is excellent...
Not gonna lie, Rebirth in a box sounds sweet. That would beat the hell out of trying to use the touchscreen of an iPad.
Yeah, nothing beats real knobs
I think you nailed it on the head with your analysis. This is the kind of machine I would have wanted 10 years ago… it’s been a long time that people who care about hardware have moved on to either software for convenience or better more expensive machines (but also « better sounding »)… I still hope younger artists can discover the joy of hardware with those without breaking the bank. It sounds good.
Thank you!!!
for those live dawless jams, do you pick the other machines at random or what made you pick a dr rhythm for example in this episode? i like these weird combinations
The DR-110 is VERY similar to the TR-606 most of the T-8 drum hits are modelled after so I thought the crash would be a nice complement and also put a focus on the lack of cymbals on the T-8
Der Schnitt ist heftig derb!
❤️❤️❤️
I have the T-8 it's a very cool bit of kit, made much better once i added a set of trimmer toppers from THONK, much nicer to knob twiddle and color coded now!
THE think i'd like to see would be pattern chaining at some point from a firmware update at some point in the future.
overall i tihnk it's WAAAY more useful than any of my volcas... and the rechargeable battery is how it ought to be in 2022.
I really like my T-8 as well
Gotta check out the THONK stuff
Far better than any volca. I only have the Nubass left and that may go too
Good ol' Phil Rollins with special guests -The Henry- Collins Band. I seen those boys tear it up at the Korg Vs. Roland: Tic Tac Slam and Synths for Ants Extravaganza. Absolute legends.
Lol
Roland be like: So I heard you liek 7-segment LED displays from 1980's pinball machines and the DeLorian.
Back to 1985;)
I've gotten the Roland J6 and love it for what I need it for! They're really great
I have to check it out!
I had all of them, kept the J-6 and the E-4 which are pure fun to play! Sold the T-8 which sounds good, but is too small for jamming. the Output connection ist too close to the CutOff control knob and the menu diving is quite boring.
For us off gridders the rechargeable battery thing takes centre stage!
👍
I wait for your videos. You're the meme master, and a great musician. Thanks.
Thank you so much!!!
Episode on SP404 MK2? I don’t think it’s bad (I have one and love it), but want to hear your thoughts on it 😊
Great suggestion, thanks!
The edit when talking about the overdrive knob is too funny!
It just gets better and better @7:48
Thank you!!!
Everything should just always have individual outs, seems like a cheap and simple way to make things like this a million times better.
Sure, it would just be really cramped.
Individual outs are much underrated!
I actually like how it sounds - or rather, how you make it sound. (And that it'll fit well with my beloved DR-110)
Thank you so much!
Wow, 200 dollars for that machine is incredible!
In a good or a bad way?
In a good way))
Seeing other "reviews" of this thing, 3:55 totally surprised me and I almost want to get one. It sounds sooooo good. Why are other people afraid of turning knobs more than a mm??? ............. Great video, thanks! ;)
Thank you! Knerbs gotta be turned!
You know a drum machine is good when you have to pair it with a dr rhythm in the first jam
True that!
Pedazo de canal! El humor y la información es increíble así como la edición de los videos, y la misma música en si, demasiado crack dude! "The what synths not to buy reference channel" cheers
¡¡¡Muchisimas gracias!!!
When will you do some fake gear by Behringer?
As soon as my lawyers greenlight it;)
Thank you for the One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest reference. :)
😀
I like how Roland sell software instruments packed in the little boxes.
Works for them;)
Great vid as always, love all the references. Dang that thing is so small….or am I missing the point?
Thanks! It is;)
Also Roland seins...
btw.... wishing next 89.000 ASAP. entertainment is healthy. In AUSTRIA we need more like this
