  • Since I've got quite a few posts on my website about hair dye, I've often been asked about the pros and cons of products containing ammonia. In this video I talk about the difference between hair color without ammonia, and regular ammonia based dyed.
I didn't mention it in the video but if you are considering using regular hair dye (with ammonia), you should be aware than ammonia has been linked to telogen effluvium. This is where the hair temporarily falls out. Ammonia can loosen the hair when it's in the telogen phase and cause it to fall out prematurely. I thought I should mention this since in the past I have suffered hair loss after coloring my hair.
In my video I mention that Olaplex can help to reduce the damage caused during the coloring process. I have a number of posts on my beauty blog about the whole Olaplex range including Olaplex 4 (the shampoo), Olaplex no 8 (the Olaplex bond intense moisture mask), Olaplex 7 (the oil mentioned in the video) and alternatives to Olaplex 1 and 2 which are for salon only use.
I also have a post explaining how to use Olaplex 0 and 3 which are the two products you should use when coloring your hair at home.

My favourite brands are OGX, Olaplex, Shea Moisture, Redken, and Aunt Jackies. Please let me know in the comments about your own hair care routine, your hair type and your favourite hair brands.

Hi Olivia Loved your video . I've been dying my hair for years and your talk really explained the science behind this process and the effects of ammonia on hair.
It was both interesting and informative. Also you explained alternatives and if I continue using dyes using ammonia , how to ameliorate any damage.
    Love your posts Thanks Barbara

I used a permeanent ammonia-free option for grey coverage. It fully covered the grey hair, but somewhat damged my hair too.

do ammonia free colours look more natural? or any other benefits to ammonia free aside from being potentially less damaging?

Hi Olivia I have short hair thats frizzy and dry. So I use olaplex And good hair products but Every 4 weeks I have to dye my hair because I am grey. Is it better for me to dye my hair 𝔀𝓲𝓽𝓱 amonnia or without? I use dark hair dye. I dont bleach my hair but my hair is short I have to wash and blow dry it Every 2 or 3 days.
I have a Bob line just above the shoulders. And I am grey after 1 wk allready 🙈

Hi Tasha, If you are dying your hair every 4 weeks I would recommend choosing an ammonia free hair dye. Using ammonia on your hair every month will leave the hair brittle and dry. There are quite a few ammonia free options available which are permanent and provide good coverage for grey hair. I only ever recommend using ammonia to anyone who is dying their hair as a one off.
That's great that you are already using Olaplex - I always recommend using Olaplex to anyone who is using chemical treatments on their hair! :-) xx

@@ukbeautyroom thanx :) i only colour the new Grey hairs every month. Not the other allready coloured hair. But still your advice is then also without ammonia? I think i have found one :) i am so hoping it will help my dry hair become less dry. I mean the upper part, the hair under is soft and healthy

@@tashabella3902 the dyes without ammonia are more gentle and less likely to leave the hair brittle and dry. My hair gets really dry too… I’ve been using the L’Oréal Elvive Hydra hyaluronic acid hair mask and serum spray which really helped a lot. I have a separate video review of it. You could try using the mask and spray when you aren’t using Olaplex to see if it helps. Let me know how you get on with the ammonia free dye. 🙂 x
