Didn't realize how young the kids were when they started. I only cought them when they were teens. I knew the show was raw but bruh that was the pilot...💀
I really love how Degrassi communicated the stories and the issues on level with the kids that watched it. They always had actors who were the actual age of the kids they portrayed, they gave them realistic motives and thoughts and dialogues, they didnt turn them into "dumb kids" but also didnt treat them like adults. There's something very real and honest about the way they told these stories that I haven't seen in any other show. I'm really sad the Netflix reboot got cancelled, it was a little more messy and clumsy and weirdly paced but I felt like it really had potential.
Their actions had real consequences, not like anything today, they always portrayed storylines as close to realistic as TV could possibly make it, no hero's, shit things happen you get over it, and it shown that really well, I watched upto half way through season 10 but all my favourite characters had left by then so I gave up
I know and the ending of Next Class deserved more fanfare as it would be final Degrassi series! The production company sold the school, and that was pretty much the last nail on the coffin. RIP Degrassi 1979-2017
“This is the first episode of a family show” wasn’t the first episode of the previous generation banned from us because it discussed ab**tion lol. Degrassi don’t care
They skipped over this episode and showed the episode where Ashley ran for class president against JT. This episode was on hold until 2003. And they waited extra long to show Manny's abortion episode. Must have thought we couldn't handle it.
Juanesha Franklin yes, but in the generation of Emma’s mom the first episode ever was about it and they just never showed it in the us as far as I know! Us media is way more conservative than Canadian
Fr Spike when it came to discipline wasn't a good mom. She supported Emma and her interests, but when it came to punishing her and teaching her valuable lessons she wasn't very good at doing that.

We had something similar to the show you’re talking about in the U.K., it was called Grange Hill. Which tackled similar issues, so I like to think of Degrassi as a Canadian Grange Hill. The issues covered in GH were as followed: Teen pregnancy Drug abuse Racism Sexual assault Death Divorce HIV/AIDS Homelessness etc.
“You’ll never hate me as much as I do” Alex honey, no we love you, I know this year has been hard, but with out your videos I don’t really have much content. Best of love your epic fan base
I remember Degrassi in so far as I used to see ads for it all the time as a kid. Everytime I'd see one, I'd think "Nah that's for adults. When I'm older I'll watch this"
I think this show seems more raw because that guy genuinely seemed like a normal guy, he seemed like a nice teacher (at first). I feel like other shows play it up, make the actors overact a bit, make them seem overly creepy at first and have more of a cartoon-y unreal villain vibe. It helps you dissociate when it's so exaggerated, but this guy seemed to be more on the realistic end, which is what made it worse. Also the fact that she was actually just such an innocent kid, and leading up to all of this, everyone was worried for innocent reasons and the like.
"..You'll never hate me as much as I do." I'm concerned for you, Meyers; thoroughly concerned. Whatever is going on with you..... (I think you've gone past the regular, old self-deprecating humor we all recognize as normal and a joke, but maybe that's just me) I appreciate that you're still making videos through whatever 2020 even is now, and via these videos, still making us laugh.
I get that sometimes this kind of humor can be used to hide something, but tbh I like it & use it on myself even though I have good self-esteem. Calling myself ugly, imagining myself in bad cenarios, roasting myself... I just think it's funny. Everyone has their style so, don't worry about it. If something was wrong with Meyers there'd be more hints or sudden changes from him.
You're life is going to change. You have no idea 1. How long it's going to take you 2. What a rollercoaster it will be. It's a Canadian anime but it isn't animated.
Who in the world said this was family show? I think it's mostly a teen show and like most teen shows it definitely doesn't shy away from harsh issues. I get what you were saying about shows today being a little more romanticized, but I feel like teen shows since the 70s or 80s have always been either raw in tackling dark subjects or amiable in playing it safe and somewhat unrealistic.
Degrassi: It went there.... But seriously tho, I was home from college and started watching this when my sisters were watching this, and I remember how fascinated I was at how raw it was. Teens were actually being played by teens and they didn't shy away from stuff most American shows won't touch.
This show was really real though. Maybe not in the sense that all of these things won't happen to the same kids. But literally everyone has seen or experienced one of the things that happened in this show. And the kids were basically the age they were portraying.
Hi Alex! I agree with you on how shows now tend to romanticize teen issues. I grew up with Degrassi and really appreciate how raw it was. They had a slogan 'Degressi...It Goes There' or something like that but I loved how they told the stories. I think it helped alot of teens get through high school and hopefully avoid many of the issues the characters went through. It helped me at least. Anyway...great video, can't wait for the next!
"If all of your friends are telling you that being with a certain person is a bad idea..you should probably listen to them" I learned this from experience 💀💀
They say “Degrassi goes there” for a reason, lol. I’m so happy you did this!! Degrassi is one of my favourite teen shows of all time. Yes it’s cheesy, but it’s so eager. And the production value definitely goes up as the seasons progress.
Y'know, I was a little spooked by the "he's a pedo" twist, but then I remembered that this is Canada. "Rape whistle" commercial Canada. So that wasn't too surprising, considering.
to those who aren't: basically, every canadian actor ever was in degrassi. take a piece of Canadian media. at least three of those actors were probably in degrassi.
“Does anybody remember Degrassi?” It would be literally impossible for me to forget Degrassi, I went through absolutely the biggest Degrassi phase ever and that video title just gave me so many freaking middle school flashbacks. But regardless of...everything, I do really appreciate them trying to tackle important issues for kids and teenagers, and having a lot of diversity in their cast and characters, especially in a time where T.V. was lacking in it.

So did Shenae Grimes (Darcy) who also was later in 90210.

Degrassi was one of those shows that went from 1 to 100 in like five minutes of each episode. Like at times I couldn't even believe it was a teen drama
i was always telling myself, damn, these kids... have more drama going on than regular adults.

“Don’t date anyone, just play Animal Crossing” - Alex Meyers, 2020.
a.k.a. The greatest advice ever given to a human being.
I wish I had animal crossing......
I don’t even have Animal Crossing...
Their actions had real consequences, not like anything today, they always portrayed storylines as close to realistic as TV could possibly make it, no hero's, shit things happen you get over it, and it shown that really well, I watched upto half way through season 10 but all my favourite characters had left by then so I gave up
I loved degrassi I always go back to it grew up on it not my favorite tv show but most def for me nostalgia come to mind
I wonder if Shane Dawson think of it
I know and the ending of Next Class deserved more fanfare as it would be final Degrassi series! The production company sold the school, and that was pretty much the last nail on the coffin.

We had something similar to the show you’re talking about in the U.K., it was called Grange Hill. Which tackled similar issues, so I like to think of Degrassi as a Canadian Grange Hill. The issues covered in GH were as followed:
Teen pregnancy
Drug abuse
Racism
Sexual assault
Death
Divorce
HIV/AIDS
Homelessness
etc.
“You’ll never hate me as much as I do” Alex honey, no we love you, I know this year has been hard, but with out your videos I don’t really have much content. Best of love your epic fan base
Same love him.
I remember Degrassi in so far as I used to see ads for it all the time as a kid. Everytime I'd see one, I'd think "Nah that's for adults. When I'm older I'll watch this"
Monsicorn I literally told myself when I was 8 that when I turn 13, I would watch Degrassi and I never did lol
Honestly whenever I saw those ads on Teennick I always thought "Meh I'm fine watching reruns of Drake and Josh as well as Ned's Declassified."
But there still where so many red flags! How did she not realize tho?
KaityMay_ClayDesigns because its 2001, and catfishing wasn’t really a known thing.
"..You'll never hate me as much as I do."
I'm concerned for you, Meyers; thoroughly concerned. Whatever is going on with you.....

Always hearing about but never watching “Degrassi” was a rite of passage for American kids in the 2000s.

They all really were in their late twenties to early 30's as Degrassi in general cast age appropriate people.
If I remember correctly they were the actors that played the teenage characters from the previous generation.
We’re just so used to 20 year old teenagers and 25 year old parents.
Yeah they were actually teens on the degrassi and the latest early twenties
I really need that "big ol' red flag" as a gif with transparent background
"If all of your friends are telling you that being with a certain person is a bad idea..you should probably listen to them" I learned this from experience 💀💀

I’m so happy you did this!! Degrassi is one of my favourite teen shows of all time. Yes it’s cheesy, but it’s so eager. And the production value definitely goes up as the seasons progress.
