@trandmain The living modules to be initially built on Mars will deal with processing the ambient gas on Mars to generate the breathable air that we and plants need. So the box would just need to be hooked up to that system. From there, solar panels charge the bulbs inside the container and the only other variable is whatever else the plants need to grow. Hydroponics will probably be the way because soil would be difficult to make.
Fresh, chemical free, creating more land for wild life and wild plants to thrive,... more bees and butterflies... happy bunnies ha ha. Happy days... I can't wait. I would like to have one of these in my garden🌱💗🌱☀️🌈🌱🌳
It's a proud day when we get to see our customer and biggest champion of the Freight Farms technology, Kimbal Musk and Square Roots, on the Today Show! It feels like just yesterday we delivered these container farms to Brooklyn, and it's been great to watch their progress. Congrats, guys!
Hey there! We can totally understand how it may have been a bit confusing in this broadcast, but Square Roots purchased their equipment from Freight Farms back in 2016 to grow fresh produce in Brooklyn, you can learn more about it in this case-study on how the two companies work together: www.freightfarms.com/square-roots. You can also learn about other Freight Farmers growing all across the globe on our website! Let us know if you have any more questions.
SpaceX: Takes us to Mars Tesla, Solarcity and Gigafactory: Highly automated factories and energy grid necessary for Mars infrastructure. Boring Company: Underground Habitats necessary because of the lack of a global magnetic shield on Mars. Kimbal Farms: The kind of farm necessary to grow food on Mars.
I have started a tiny garden in a 4'x4' grow tent and am amazed by how much can be grown in a small space. parsley, bunching onions, carrots, spinach, cherry tomatoes, swiss chard lettuce, basil, rosemary, sage a fern, some small flowers... and there is room for a little more. It has never been easier to grow a garden than it is today and the sky is the limit. You owe it to yourself to purchase a small grow light and to grow your own little garden. Gardening is good for the soul.
Hey Christopher - we totally agree and have great news...there are freight farms operating all over the world growing food for communities! There may even be one in your neighborhood. Learn more at www.freightfarms.com/case-studies
Your local farmer's market often has lots of great local/organic/no GMO/no pesticide produce. Do a Google search and you might be surprised the great selection nearby.
Yeah Kimbal is very deliberate about his media presence. He was probably repeating the thing about taste so much because... well people are dumb and resistant to change so whenever there's new tech solutions in food the first thing most people (as most people aren't especially health conscious) do is think about taste. Kelly even mentioned something related to this when she used the word 'techy' before the taste test.
I understand it may be difficult if you live in a city like New York, but in most parts of the country there are Regenerative/Sustainable farm operations. It is worth subscribing to a CSA box program from one of them for fresh, delicious, nutritious produce. This is a cool idea, but people should also look to support the farms that are already near them.
I can imagine big brother Elon wanting to adapt some of this technology. On some future space station, there could be a section that would be growing fruits and vegetables, stuff like meat, milk and dairy, and bread stuff would still have to be shipped up but the overall costs of supplying food would be cut down dramatically.

Thumbs-Up #1K-PLUS on Saturday late afternoon 20 June 2020! Well thanks to Megyn Kelly and the TODAY show I now have Kimbal Musk’s name firmly planted in my mind (not a play on words)! His farming idea removes much of my dislike for farming, but then I was forced to drive tractors as a kid.
What? He invented a less efficient way to do photosynthesis. How many cargo containers are required to feed per person in NYC? And now add the additional solar panel space required to middle-man the sunshine delivery to plants. This seems like a perfect program for the government. Congress will love it.
I would really like one of those in my backyard. Oh the would be the best thing ever...is brilliant. He is so right so hard to get restful produce or herbs so hard...

I used to wonder why Elon got so much bad press, and then I realized it was because he's actually trying to solve earth's problems, and that of course will enrage a lot of people. Not surprised to find his brother is also pursuing solutions to earth's problems.
I had been researching and experimenting with Hydroponic and vertical farming. Sure it more controlled environment crops growing but it can also get very expensive to maintains and not really eco-friendly or self-sustainable. Traditional farming is actually more sustainable on the long run and more cost affective. This requires a lot of electricities, water and resources. Also it has a easy chance containation and failure if the environment is compromise. And the cost of the nutrients cost more than traditional soil and fertilizer. This option is actually great for colder climate and having crops all year around. But we also shouldn't give up on traditional farming as well. Both methods are needed.
I love all of this!!! Poverty can end now. Our farms should be clean, healthy, and our animals cared for. Thank God for this family. Kudos to you Kimbal! 🦋🌈✨👣
I will one day have a small garden, by God's grace. Even 1 vegetable or 5: tomatoes, scallions, parsley, mint, lemons, yams, potatoes.. I love to go to farmers markets, small or large. My favourite place in a supermarket is the veggie section.
