  • Border collie, getting a bit older and less mobile, she was beginning to struggle to get up the stairs. There was already an almost unused stairlift installed, so I decided to see if there was some way that could be modified, to help the dog get up the stairs...
What I ended up with, was a detachable piece of sponge and carpet covered board. The front edge has a bolted on metal U channel bracket, which hooks onto the front upper part of the foot plate. A raised strip of timber then locks it tightly in place at the other side of the foot plate, while ever there is weight on the board. Under the foot plate, is a second plate or panel, which is designed to detect and help prevent the lift running over any objects, so the board fixings needed to be clear of that.
To the back of the board, I added a supporting section of board, so the board is better supported when at ground floor level. To the uphill end of the board, I added a sort of removable front kick board, to help prevent the dog trapping her front paws, between the board and step.
The stairlift has remote controls, both top and bottom, and has been in use now for a month by the dog. She was a reluctant passenger at first, needing lots of encouragement to get on the board, to ride up, needed someone to follow her up, to make sure she didn't try to jump off, part way up.
She gradually got the idea, to the point now, where she is keen to step on, and becomes impatient waiting for someone to press the 'up' button.
