They use a mixture of low and high tech systems, heavy metals and dioxins are trapped in cooling ponds and absorbed by reeds. The reeds are harvested and then incinerated. This is repeated until they are destroyed. The inert ash in used as building materials. Denmark has almost no landfill.

On this plant, the waste is gasified. There is an incinerator, but that is more for emergencies - eg fuel is running low and it takes a long time to get up and running again when fuel is, for example, delayed due to uncontrollable situations that insurers would probably class as "an act of god". There's currently no permit issued for the burning of general waste, not sure if it even has an emergency use permit. Unfortunately, I can not remember how the gasifier works. The gasifier is in the really tall building near end of the construction. There is a by-product, which I'm not sure what happens to it. This is not where recycled cardboard comes to, or any recyclable product that is already sorted. This is more of a sorting facility, that only processes unusable waste for use in the gasifier.
