Track 2 from 'Scores' is this piece called 'Up With The Birds'.
My grandfather and grandmother had this beautiful property on the Mornington Peninsula for 60 years. On 5 acres of land, nestled in amongst a beautiful slice of temperate rainforest. The birds would sing and play all day and night there.
I never met my grandfather, and after my grandmother passed away in 2018, the house went up for sale. On my last visit there, I sat by the bird pool and recorded some audio of the birds singing and playing. I then went back and wrote this chord progression on the piano, and added a string quartet to give the song some feeling.
It ends with that recording of the birds. The term 'Up with the birds' as I know it represents death, and I thought this was a good contrast to 'Intro'. In just two songs, there is a complete 'circle of life' meaning to the scores.
