This was a fun engine to run! Pardon my slight cold for this video. Also, the “Air Horn” feature is an Air Raid Siren. Thank you to all who have been correcting me on the name of this epic feature!
Chris, at 37 I'd guess you're not old enough to remember REAL sirens, the ones on police cars and fire engines are all electronic now. But at 68 I sure remember 'em!
That air raid siren never gets old! I'm getting a Turbine for my HO fleet soon. I have seen a GTEL in person. Even on static display it is epic. Congrats on this epic engine!
I met a former Union Pacific employee years ago. He told me if you want to know what a GTEL sounded like stand at the end of a runway when a jet airliner's taking off. Just like that!
Thanks for the fun run of the Gas Turbine engine, Chris. The dynamic paint scheme would have been something to see on the rails going across country in the day. A fantasy tip of the hat to the Flying Tigers of WWII! Thanks for this unique review of a special model!
Nice review. Model Railroaders tend to be history buffs. World War 2 is a fascinating part of American History. My father was a World War 2 veteran so studying the war brought it to the next level for me. Your turbine definitely takes you back in time. Love the teeth on the nose and pin up on the side. (Favorite feature for me is probably the pin up.)
Chris, I have served in the U.S. Army for 21 years and in that time I have actually been on a working transition train once and it was a truly wonderful experience 😀. Thank you for bringing back those memories for me.
As someone who is Retired US Army I love this engine. That Air Raid Siren is fabulous. When I hear it I want to go duck and cover from a possible attack. The engine is so huge but my layout is mostly 031 with one turn of 064. Not sure if it would work. Good luck with it and keep playing the siren.
That “Air Raid Siren” is badass cool!! Gotta love it! Lionel was thinking out if the box when they put that sound effect in it. Having something different makes it that much more interesting instead of the same ole same ole. Even the smoke feature when the turbine sound kicks in makes this locomotive different from all others. The smoke boost is amazing to see. Glad to see you purchased this locomotive. Seeing both of your shark mouth design locomotives running together was impressive. You should purchase some die cast P40 Flying Tiger airplanes, and hang them from your ceiling in different locations over your layout. That would look pretty cool while you run your teethy trains! Great review!!
I wish we could have predicted just how popular the Turbines ended up being. My boss ordered three of these army turbines and they disappeared within a week or so. We also had 6 regular UP Big Letter, one UP Small Letter, and one UP Flag. All gone. People are going bananas for these things, and I think rightfully so.
New to your channel . Yep I just took delivery of my 1941 a couple of months ago . Absolutely love both the air raid siren 🚨 and the turbine sounds and smoke . Love both of your shark teeth trains ! Way cool military load and cars . Have fun! 🙂

Chris, I bet a smoke alarm would go off if there was one in the room! Love all of your videos. Can you ever do a Texco Special from 1955? That is really my favorite train engine!
Katy Carl here, Another great show! Massive locomotive and I love the Army paint scheme. Would look good pulling my military train. I still do not see a Texas Special in your inventory. The Katy has to have one. Keep up the great videos and Happy Trails.
I should run the Texas Special again, great suggestion! It has been some time since I ran that one in a video! I have the Post War F3 version of the Texas Special and it is one of my go-to vintage engines when I am having fun. Thanks for watching!
Someone may have made this comment, but the teeth come from the American Volunteer Group in 1941-42, who flew the P-40 "Flying Tigers". Their P-40s were adorned with beautiful nose art, including the famous tiger teeth. The men that flew these planes truly represented the greatest generation. And, the P-40 Warhawk, along with the F4U Corsair (think Black Sheep Squadron) and the P-51 Mustang, are my favorite WW2 aircraft.
Excellent background! I had read this about the engine but was too afraid to attempt to explain it in the video as I would have likely said something wrong along with referring to the siren as a horn, LOL. I am already paying for this mistake...
An aviation writer 50 years ago said "Why did they ever come up with the P-51 Mustang when they had something cool like the P-40?" Well, there WERE reasons... And the "Black Sheep," VMF-214 were the best! Semper Fi!
The smoke on this engine is an incredible feature. I only wish my camera would have better captured the turbine sound as well. Thanks for watching Kevin!
I'd be careful letting those trucks dangle. The shop I got mine from, the first one we opened the dicast plate was cracked in 2. This is really a great engine though. Lionel did a nice job on these. Here's hoping the Class A is equally awesome.
That is a pretty neat locomotive. You might consider looking into getting some 1/48th scale Curtis P40 Warhawk aircraft with that specific nose art (the Flying Tigers) and create some flatcar loads with them. You would have to remove the wings and place them alongside the fuselage to both make them fit and also look prototypical. Would not they look good behind that locomotive? Having grown up in the 1950's during the Cold War era I well remember air raid drills during my grade school years. Kudos on a great layout and please keep the informative videos coming.
This is the coolest military engine in oscale so much character and creativity, my only thing I wish they did was if they added a drill Sargent for crew talk🤣👍 awesome video as always my friend!
The sharkmouth scheme looks pretty good on the sharks, gotta say it makes the turbine look a bit like a whale. Still pretty cool and the air raid siren is hilarious.
I don't know Chris, I've seen a lot of things but I've never seen locomotives that needed orthodontia! You know, that Turbine puts out so much smoke it made me think if you can get the Raid company to produce smoke fluid you can use the Turbine as a yard fogger come summertime!

This is all new to me again and pretty overwhelming.. I want to be able to have a large layout with multiple trains running just like yours.
Glad to hear you are back! You are coming into the hobby during an interesting time as far as getting a control system. There are two primary manufacturers in O Gauge with regard to digital control. Lionel and MTH. MTH is currently revamping their company and will have control systems available again sometime in the near future. Lionel just released a new control system that they call “CAB 3” which will deliver late 2022/ early 2023. In the meantime you have a few options for the modern trains: 1. You can run them with Bluetooth from a tablet or phone. 2. You can operate them conventionally with your transformer. 3. You can check local hobby shops, eBay or others for the control systems that I am using (Lionel Legacy and MTH DCS). I know this is info overload but hope this helps or, at least, gives you some key words to “Google”. Thanks for watching!
