Seulgi thinks that she's the monster but then she feels that someone controlling her and that person is Irene she appears in her dreams as it shown in the mv, and then when Seulgi grabs Irene, the true self of Irene shows and that's the monster face , but Seulgi didn't see it, so the whole Mv is about Irene controlling Seulgi like her shadow that's whay they face each other a lot ..

OMG I love this theory so much because you can see it play out in the choreo. In the beginning Irene is being controlled by Seulgi in that "monster" formation but at the end it switches and Seulgi is the one being controlled!!! aaah I feel like I need to watch it again now

When Irene says she's the original visual, she's not kidding man.
There voices aren’t different it’s just that this song is way lower than red velvet songs
he didn't mean they're different. well it is. their vocal tone is very different than what we have heard from seulgi and irene.
This lower register is where Seulgi and Irene sound the best at. Seulgi in Close to Me was epic. Sultry and more soulful.

This video is much more cooler and the song is melodically unique. This song deserves breaking records views rather than a certain other group’s recycled song.
I am glad SM put this subunit together, I think this style of song really fits both of their voices. Especially Irene, usually in Red Velvet songs Irene's voice rarely stands out. In this song, she's just as much of a vocalist as Seulgi (who always shines imo).
i agree w/ Seulgi always shining. either its her vocals, dancing, stage presence/charisma.. as for Irene, her visuals overshadowed her talents.. THIS IS HER RANGE and a big slap to those who says she cant sing. finally! she's always been a great dancer since pre-debut tho.
God damn Seulgi is s treasure. Even outside of stage just when people take photos she emits so much energy.

"It's really different" that was what Seulgi said before the song came out, that the concept of Monster was new for them and that it was something completely different from what Red Velvet has done, and even I dare say that no other group has done something like this before.

There is another theory floating around, involving wardrobe malfunction in the video that they caught late. I've seen some video backing this up but...?
the mv meaning was "TWO SHADOWS" , means that everyone have their "monster" side inside them, dark seulgi is monster side of Irene, and dark Irene is monster side of seulgi. it's like seulgi and Irene is "one" person but have two shadows, u ca see it in the interview teaser.
That's how Irene sounds, the low range. If you listen to their bside tracks, you'll know.
So about the MV, it draws strong inspiration from a goth fiction story from the nineteenth century called Carmilla, especially that scene with Irene on a white dress. Basically Carmilla is a vampire that falls in love with the main character, a girl called Laura. That maybe might shed some light on the whole monster thing and why there's such a strong gay undertone to the video. Obviously there's a parallel to be traced about the whole fight of the lgbt community nowadays in Korea as well.

There’s definitely many theories and correlations in this video, so you should definitely check them out, but basically Seulgi thinks she is the monster but Irene was the true monster all along. In my opinion, every part of this video was well thought out and done on purpose for a reason. One of the best MVs I’ve seen in awhile.

Usually with Red Velvet’s MVs they don’t have much to do with the lyrics of the song. I’ve seen a theory on twitter that the MV was inspired by a gothic novella called Carmilla that tell the story of a young woman who is being preyed upon by a female vampire.

They haven't officially released any sort of statement regarding the delay, but apparently they edited some scenes out in order to not get blocked on Korean channels. Like the scene where Irene is holding a knife. It's already age-restricted but at least not blocked entirely.

Because of this reaction I listen to Monster again with clarity and focus on instrument and I notice in the original Monster MV, if you listen to it you'll hear some chuckle, giggle, laugh *something like that. The last one was in (5:52) it was like a doll laughing. It was crazy and creepy at the same time.
Plus if you listen to it on midnight it gives different vibes.
