  • Wouldn't it be nice to get paid for doing the things you like to do? In this case, it is not direct payment - but rather you can make money on your tax refund if you get involved with the right museum or institution.
In this video we will go over the thoughts of getting involved with the Florida State Collection of Arthropods and the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera research in Gainesville, Florida and by donating specimens to the museum, you can write off up to $5000 a year on your taxes. Larger donations could work too but an appraisal would be needed.

I am an avid collector. The only hard boundary I have is when things are either listed as threatened or are suspected to be threatened. I also advise against collecting the super common stuff just because I don't think there is much knowledge to be gained through collecting them.
Other than that I say go nuts provided you are minimising stress to the animals and respecting the animals by 1) keeping accurate data and records of the specimens and 2) doing everything in your power to ensure the specimens are kept in good or at least usable condition.
An extra note is to make sure you have plans for your collection to end up in a good home after you eventually pass. A lot of collections have been destroyed in the past because the families of the deceased don't know how to look after the collection or who to give it to.
As for making money from collecting, not sure its possible here in Australia. Insect collecting isn't a big thing here.

It’s in my family, my granddad my father did collect moths and butterflies so it’s in my blood to collect. I only collect so I can breed and study the life cycles of them. First only butterflies but thanks to you😄 also moths. Have a great day greetings from the Netherlands 🇳🇱

I'm 16; i've been collecting for 8 years but have just started selling in these last 5 years. It is profitable, but to some extent I sell to be able to share this joy with others

Dave, can you deduct the cost of your equipment(nets, lights, etc) also? When you donate do they remove the specimens from your boxes and return them later?

Good questions. I’m sure you can - the museum swaps out pinning boxes when I give them boxes full of stuff. They have empty ones they give you

Gregcudworth5502: When I donated 8,000 specimens to the McGuire Center in Gainesville, Florida they sent special card board boxes to me. I transferred my specimens into these boxes. Then sent the boxes to the museum. Hope that helps answer your question.

What fumigant do you prefer and where do you get that double sided specimen box?

    • @keysmoths5336

That specimen box was made for me custom by a wood working guy I know. I’ve used the Bioquip fumigants until this year. I have to figure out what’s next as mine is running out

I collect only to sample populations and for voucher specimens. I no longer collect just for the sake of collecting.
