      Besides, we Gods (me & my pure protectors aka the alphas) are a pure being in every way, so we are the opposite of hum’ns - all hum’ns s7ehnk, so how can they be so _ to dare to misuse the big term gods, when they all s7ehnk and are an eempure being! Hi, cybersecurity engineer (O.S.C.P.) in San Francisco here. I am just halfway in, but you have gotten it all surprisingly correct so far. You are spot on about hardware/Yubi keys, but I have found through repeated sad experience that is is literally easier to convince someone to sleep with me than get them to use a password manager, let alone a piece of physical kit they have to keep on them at all times.

      Hardware keys are best, IMO. Personally, I use a YubiKey C Bio - FIDO Edition because I like the fingerprint reader on the key for an added level of bio metric security.

    Just on the asbestos conversation (as someone who has taken multiple asbestos training courses in is certified for removal) - the issue with asbestos related health issues, like mesothelioma, is that the typical time for the cancer to show up is anywhere from 10 to 40 years after exposure. You know, there are open-source password managers that work great, such as Keepass... the only problem is that you need to figure out where you want to host your database and how to sync it. While a bit more difficult to set up, you own your data, and so are way more protected against leaks (as long as your database is hosted somewhere you consider safe), and the likelyhood for any backdoors is essentially 0.

    • @bandosbandos
      @bandosbandos ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hosting your own service also comes with a lot of issues. I do not recommend hosting your own password manager. Yes you are safe against leaks to a point but if you don't know what you are doing and you don't keep your server up to date you run the risk of getting your network owned and this includes a lot more than just having your hashes and meta data stolen.

    • @rubenhein9128
      @rubenhein9128 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@bandosbandos For Keepass you don't really host a server with a software. You basicly have a single (or more) enyrpted database file, wich you need to access. The Software runs on the client (Android, iPhone, Mac, PC) and to access the database you need the masterpassword. For additional safety you can add a keyfile, that only exists on a client or a hardwarekay, like yubikey. I would recomend it any day.

    • @bandosbandos
      @bandosbandos ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rubenhein9128 this only works if you plan to access the password store from one device. If you want to access your passwords across devices you need a way access the single source of truth. Windows defaulting to hiding extensions is a big part of why renaming EXEs work, as long as you change the icon, meta, and name it like a PDF you need to right click before it becomes possible to tell the difference("run" instead of "open").
    Renaming them used to be popular in the XP days still, but everyone spotted "contract.pdf.exe" as suspicious since you had to go out of your way to hide the filetype almost everyone could see it. Changing the default hurt so many people who simply didn't know any better.

    • @Basement-Science
      @Basement-Science ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Except that when file extensions are hidden, .exe is hidden as well, so if you ever saw anything that looks like a file extension (.pdf for example), that means it has another one that is being hidden and that should make you suspicious anyway.
      The problem really comes in when people *_vaguely_* know what a file exension is and what it looks like, but dont know whether they are being hidden at the moment and why.
      There's just no idiot-proof way of handling this. I definitely agree that file extensions should never be hidden because it just makes things more complicated, but unless people actually know what a file and a program is etc, all you can do is hope for the best in the end.

    I am right there with nile. I have 5 drives, a boot drive, a mass storage drive, 2 ssd, and an nvme. I treat the boot drive as expendable and will format/reinstall windows yearly. I keep a backup of driver collections on the mass storage drive just in case I can't get to the Internet upon a reinstall. Combine that with scheduled backups of important directories to my nas/cloud drive and I feel its the best way to use a computer.
    You get the peace of mind knowing that if Windows shits the bed you won't lose much. Then the on site/off site backups are there in case everything shits the bed.

    On the power tool subject, you can get 3 phase 400v power to your house, it might need some sort of permit but it's relatively easy to get if you have some sort of shop, and allows you to use incredibly powerful tools.

    The changing the extension tactic is extremely common, and it works so much. Everyone says they will never fall for phishing campaigns or that they would have caught the thing, and while it may be true it won't save you. The people's entire job is to compromise your account. There are teams of people working to not outsmart systems, but outsmart the account holders and it works all the time. Never think you are infallible, that you would spot every attempt because you won't.

      Physically stealing devices and physically extracting passwords from people is a thing.
      Previous password best practices was previously focusing on shorter passwords that changed frequently. Current NIST guidance NIST special publication 800-63b boils down to using longer passwords that either dont expire as quickly or not at all

    Your extension cord thing reminded me of when I needed an extension cord for my Dyson fan so I could plug in near my desk in the garage to heat myself in the winter (it was an abnormally cold winter). So I just found the thickest gauge cable possible, at the shortest distance I needed, so I think it was a 10AWG, 10ft cable. I know that heater sucks up amps because it and a vacuum cleaner on the same circuit will trip the breaker lol. But the ironic thing is that, neither the Dyson cable nor extension ever heated up in the slightest, neither the length of the cables nor the connector. The thing that disturbed me was that it was outlet that got hot! It's just so old at this point I guess. Switched it to another outlet, no longer heated up. Never had to do it another winter, thankfully, but it did make me think like, a house isn't even 10AWG in the wall. When people cause fires with extension cords, they must be using those really flimsy like 20awg ones meant for Xmas lights, or the connectors and and outlets are really old and worn out. I mean, like working with high voltage electronics like CRTs, or some of the stuff you guys do, don't do something if you can't calculate the risks, and I was always watching it and had an electrical fire extinguisher on hand. Frankly tho, my doing what I did turned out to be more of a trip hazard than a fire hazard. 😂🤣

    • @jacewhite8540
      @jacewhite8540 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      To add to the last reply, per electrical code a 15A receptacles is only supposed to have a 12A load. Code also allows 15A receptacles to be put on general purpose 20A circuit. These 2 codes combine to allow a 15A receptacle to be severely overloaded without overloading the circuit and causing the breaker to trip. I believe they do produce so called "heavy duty" 15A receptacles with better build quality that likely could handle 20A loads, however they are more expensive and thus electrical contractors are unlikely to use them for new construction.

    49:38 I just arc welded for the first time last weekend. It was 1/4 cold rolled steel. It was an easy weld but quick. The hard part was removing the mill scale. I threw every wheel and flap disk I had at it and barely made a dent. I have covered it in paper towels and sprayed it down with acid everyday and it's still a slow process. The only discs that work are these Scotch Brite ones I ordered special. They are great but even with the acid it took several hours to get to the bare metal. Mill scale is a b¡tçh. Going forward I don't care if it's shiny and will just leave it be.

    The kangaroo in California belonged to a veterinarian Nick named "doc" he was a veterinarian for celebrity animals as well as a lot of major zoos. He had a kangaroo at his house while we were doing construction there. Unfortunately the kangaroo escaped during the project because a broken gate and the poor guy got hit by a car that was driving through the canyons. It was really sad, but I can't help but think what must've gone through that person's head when they realized they hit a baby kangaroo 🤔

    This is why I made a pre-hashing tool to use a hash as a standard password on websites that are generated from a seed word or phrase at the time you need it. That way it's never stored and you can't be forced to say your password because you only know the seed word or phrase. Barring that, just use pass-sentences like "This is my 1st password for TH-cam."
    Keep a backup of your registry on Windows on the NAS and a linux USB drive, then just copy paste. Way faster than a 2TB image.
    Windows hides extensions because dumb users would hide executables and viruses could automatically change extension and run, getting around non-heuristic based antivirus solutions.

    Anything plugged into a standard U.S socket will have a max of 1,500 watts continuous pull from the outlet, some devices can peak at 1,800 but you wouldn't be able to draw that amount continuously which is why pretty much every electronic intended for a standard outlet won't exceed 1,500 watts.

    49:48 I don’t have a ton of experience in welding but I’ve got a bit, and I’m pretty sure you had some issue if you were needing to clean it that much. This could be not enough gas, welding too fast or too far from the material, pulling the welder away from the surface too quickly depriving the surface of gas, or welding with a contaminated tip. I’m sure there’s probably other reasons to have to clean that much slag off your welds and if anyone more experienced in welding wants to put in their two cents I’d welcome it.
