I can't believe I just discovered these videos now! Well done! That type of waving was called "marcelling". In the '20's they developed special curling irons to achieve this look. My grandmother was a hairdresser in the 1920's, and she used to tell me how they would practice their craft in homes for "wayward" girls and women. The hair was very rarely washed in these places and she told me that the stench created by the use of the hot marcelle iron on the filthy hair was unbelievably pungent. Oh...the good old days!
I know this was a while ago, but finger waving is a little easier if your hair is wetter and you use longer clips to make the bends in the waves and finger wave clips to give the elevation. You do have to sit under a dryer or wait longer for it to dry, but even switching to the longer clips would help a bunch.
sparkybish I was going to suggest the same thing I've never done finger waves myself but I have a friend that loves them and she usually doesn't want her hair is drenched and she loads up on the gel and then as it dries with that gel in that style it still has a very glossy look but I don't think I have the patience to pull something off I prefer the 1940s pageboy myself
I feel you.. I did my sister's hair in finger waves recently for a school project of hers (she has to re-create a family photograph and chose a picture of our great-grandmother which was taken in the twenties), and it was so hard! Especially because she has quite thick, full, layered haur with bangs and it's just shoulder lenght... Turned out quite well though, but I used a lot of gel😏
I love love love the roaring 20s and I never stopped researching years ago just so I can try my best to bring them back to 2020, at least now I'm living in the roaring twenties, just kinda wish more would join me
+Loepsie you're so well spoken and smart! thanks for these videos! I love the edwardian era and 20's most of all, but learning about different eras hair history is super interesting. ty! :)
Finger waves was were I did not do well in beauty school. The ridge in a finger wave is crucial to making it a finger wave. Lots of product is needed to make the proper wave.
Omg the classic Egyptian hair styles were so beautiful. I'm sure you can find many pictures about it. Japanese woman hair Styles were very classy and elegant, quite painful as well because they used actual hot wax combined with a oil to hold it tight ,and they could not lay down to sleep as normal. I forget the name of the padded wood piece they used as a pillow ,but it it would go under the neck not the head. Look up geisha pillows maybe you can find
I absolutely love this hairstyle... And I think it actually looks very feminine! And it looks very good on you! I also love the idea of this sort of "emancipation through hairstyle" XD I mean, the Church and some men want to control women even up to the way they do their hair, and women just don't care and do whatever they want with it, even if it includes cutting their hair short x) Thank you for this episode, I'm really looking forward to the next ones :D
CookieScrat I love that in pretty much any century the church and men tried to tell women what to do and what not to do with their hair, and they just were like "meh"
The 1920s was not when the finger waves first came out. They just got more popular in the 20s and 30s . Many women were doing finger waves in the 1910s ,there are pictures of my great great grandma with finger waves from 1918 . It just became all the hype in the 20s because the flapper girls wore the style quite frequently
o now i know were these things were for. i found some of my grandmothers clips. i thought they were for bags but they have teethand were made from metal

What country are u speaking of, pelase? My grandmother was born in 1901 so knew ALL about the Bob and all things flapper... The automobile was THE driver in both women's fashions and hair - when the model t came out, and everyone could afford a car for the first time in histkey, elaborate hairstyles, even simple hairstyles but on long har, no longe room red because car were either convertibles or had no windows, and no car had air conditioning. In shirt, women's Hari looked HORRIBLE unless it was cut short short shirt. According to all the women in my famiky, and everyone they knew, the Bob was worn so women could easily "fix" their hair after driving and so it would not whip around their faces while driving.
IOW, PRACTICALITY rath was the driver, not independence or any if the other things u hear now. People apply current drivers to the past, which is not n accurate way if viewing it...
Watch Downton Abbey to see how they did fingerwaves and the like without losing length. It's very nice!

Today many of elder women have their hair cut short. Mostly out of practical reason, but I agree, long(er) hair would them suit so much better...
I think that hairstyle is Looking original only with short hair. Can´t imagine how it´s working on Long hair.. anyways.. it is Looking good
