@@KevinicusPD Yeah, I’m definitely an asshole because I’ve seen him uploading FTL videos, but I was never interested in watching them until I heard how angry the game made him.
@@Exley21 He has a several videos of the game, but I haven’t watched them yet. Although I gather from his tirade that he is just beyond frustrated with the game and with his chat backseating the game.
Update: I watched the first video of Barb’s FTL playthrough. I didn’t expect to give 2 shits about a game like this. But oh my goodness is it fun to watch him play. Definitely recommend to others to check out if they haven’t already.

I remember watching Mario Impossible Levels on TH-cam back in 2007. I don’t know when rom hacks became big, but those levels were amazing to watch. They always had an ending where Mario would die after the goal tape unless you did some sick strat. I remember finding one other person in real life who watched those videos as well, and we both geeked out so hard watching them together.
Kaizo 1 was released in 2007, and I think 2 wasn’t wasn’t much later
@@conaldeugenepeterson2147 Thanks for the info! I was wondering about that. It’s funny that for the longest time I didn’t know people were out there making entire games by hacking Super Mario World. I just knew about these individual levels where the player would start with 99 lives and would try to beat an “impossible” level. I only saw someone get a game over once, and but they still beat the level eventually, although they lost their checkpoint and had to start over after losing all their lives.
@@supersexysadie no problem. GlitchCat has a really interesting blog on the history of kaizo that starts in the late 80’s with a Famicom device that let users basically edit disks. Pretty cool stuff

This was an enjoyable playthrough...to watch, I realize that this game is far from easy and can respect anyone taking it up so congrats to playing this difficult hack, there is something to be said about games like this holding up after so much time and still being some difficult game to survive. Also great to see your cat on stream.

I agree with the savestates. I started really early and used them as well. I was told to do so by everyone else playing these games. Just so i could get the level down enough to actually do it in one shot. Yes we were nerds in a chatroom

I remember when this first came out. I went through the effort to play it back in 07 and never made it past the first level.
It's insane to me to think about someone not only beating it but also the entire world of SMW hacks that have arisen since its release.
This is the only kaizo hack I ever played. Around 10-15 years ago, on ZSNES with a shitty game pad and save states for every jump. I blows my mind that people play it this casually

It's interesting to see how the language of kaizo has progressed. Kaizo 1 is meant to be cruel and is primitive; compared to the challenging (albeit trolly) way newer hacks are now.
This is the only Kaizo I've ever played. With safe states. And sometimes slow downs. That was enough for me.

It's crazy how this is basically what MM turned into.
im fucking old bc i played this like a year after it came out. on a shitty emulator. with save states ofc. crazy what kaizo became since then. also so refreshing to play kaizo compared to "normal" games from studios. so much character from the creater, so much unfiltered creativity and hard as balls. the first time i beat kaizo mario world 1 i was so happy and exausted. the next day i started playing it again haha. addicted since then.
I’ve never played a single rom hack. But I’ve been watching people play them for damn near a decade. I haven’t seen this played in years, and compared to the modern hacks, this looks legit tame AF.

I remember I saw creators who played this Rom Hack and they were using a lot of save states.

Wow, I don't think I ever knew you could cheese the post-goal death by screen scrolling, and I thought I knew pretty much every trick in these games.
Barb's FTL arc remind me of mine, except I did mine in 2015. It's so cool, but also so annoying. Certain patterns can reliably get you to a win, and exploring outside them once you discover them usually doesn't pay off.
Roguelikes have that kind of thing, but the degree to which FTL rewards you for just memorizing the outcomes of events ends up being pretty tedious.

If I played FTL with 2 buddies over my house… I would go insane with all the ‘you should do this’ and ‘buy that’ and ‘why didn’t you do this?’. There are so many variables, that nothing you do will satisfy everyone. I can’t imagine playing it with 65k people. .. or whatever you have on twitch. I’d rather swallow a gun barrel.

Making mario jump after hitting a switch, for example. Normally the animation ends on touching the switch, but timing your button press to the exact frame (1/60th of a second) you hit it, makes you do a jump.
Also, like jumping off a p-switch.
