As a young person who has struggled with depression and anxiety for a while, thank you for making this video. I feel like not enough people talk about mental as openly as you both do. I’ve seen so many people treat mental health as something that shouldn’t be talked about. I can’t even remember how many times kids at my school have made jokes about depression and suicide. I’ve always felt invisible and like something was wrong with me. I absolutely love it when you both post videos like this. I agree with everything you say and I feel validated. I wish more people were like you. I hope you both will continue to take care of yourselves. Don’t feel pressured to post new content for us, do it for you. Mental health comes first. ❤

I honestly feel like Ryan's transparency with mental health really helps me. Him being a straight up and an intellect regardless motivates me to learn and that is the coolest sh!!t. Sam is just an ethereal soul that just never lets her anxiety distort her beautiful happy aura. The message of his video was incredible and definitely something that us as a society need to do some work on, not projecting based on how our mental health is or what we feel other's mental health is. I pray for all of our healing and pray you all find peace, balance and structure. xxxxx

As someone with depression, I can relate to a lot of this. You never really know what is going on with someone unless they tell you directly. Sometimes, when I'm quiet and my face looks sad, I'm just chillin and being quiet. And sometimes, when I am super happy and passionate, I may be struggling to find my will to live on the inside. You just don't know, and it's ok to ask, but never assume. Asking shows you care, assuming shows you pity them and think every single thing they do that doesn't emulate happiness is bad.

I spend so much energy making value judgments on my current state, like how well I'm handling my anxiety and dysphoria and stuff. I love that you both put such an emphasis on "come as you are," and just showing up as is and not how you "should" be or would be "at 100%." Going to hang out with friends, family, even just going to the store sometimes, I'll stop myself because I'm not at that level. I guess I'd like to believe deep down that my friends just want me there - anxious or not - but I have to tell myself and believe it too.

I am also a sufferer of both depression and anxiety and Sam’s statement of “… mental health does not have one set image; mental health is invisible…” ( 16:00 ) was such an honest, intelligent, and profound summarization of both the video and of people who live with depression & how they view themselves and/or how others view them that it actually made tear up.

My depression mixed with all my other medical problems and chronic illnesses makes a pretty firey pit. The pandemic helped 0% with everything, on top of the stress of moving out. These things still affect me everyday and people just guessing and asmuming that im fine or not is really degrading and makes me self conscious. Knowing other people are experiencing the same things Worse or the same helps alot.

Thank you for sharing and being open about this topic. I've struggled with depression for as long as I can remember. I was able to guess a lot of these correctly, because I know firsthand how well people who have depression can hide and mask those feelings, so some of the ones where Ryan seemed extra upbeat and energetic (but was actually depressed) made me think it was from years of practice from having to slip that mask on at school, or work, or life. Definitely not to say that you can't be/aren't upbeat and energetic when you aren't depressed too, but hopefully that makes sense!

A lot of times with depression people will mask that ( I do) and you never can truly know how a person is feeling. Which is what this video has shown. I think you are the real reason a lot of my views on celebrity relationships have changed. I went from "shipping" and listening to rumors and unsupported accusations, to really using my own eyes and doing the work to see if people might just be saying things because they sound good. I learned to just be happy that my favorite celebrities are happy. No sides, no fighting about it, I just love and encourage the celebrities I like. I listen when they set boundaries (like Barrett is fighting to do now, even though she shouldn't HAVE to fight) I respect people's privacy. I think it was right around the time Tom Holland stepped out of the limelight for a break and everyone was freaking out. I remember saying to myself, "How's his career my business?" So I messaged both of them and told them I wished them the best. I try to focus on them as individuals rather than as only a couple. I remember they are just regular humans like me. Everyone needs time, space, and privacy to heal and grow as human beings. That has been life-changing in my interactions with everyone honestly.

As someone who has both ocd (therefore, anxiety) & depression (so fun!), I find it's almost impossible for people around me to notice I'm actually depressed unless I want them to lol. I can be my "happiest" often when I'm depressed, because I'm masking just to make it through the day... but that's where communication comes in lol. Ryan I think it speaks so much of your character that you choose to show up for others even when you are down. Of course self care is super importnat so it makes me happy that you emphasize that as well. Showing up for others at the cost of your own health shouldn't be glorified. So It's always refreshing to hear that you strive for that balance.

I'm glad you made this. I did find myself feeling a bit frustrated at Ryan in that recent Heathers video. I've known a lot of people who just sort of act like they don't care about something which always annoyed me because I'd wonder why do it then? It makes a lot of sense to me that maybe he was depressed during that. I could easily have left one of those comments they showed at the start - I don't think I did though, and I'm glad. Putting someone down because of what is essentially due to their illness can't help. Maybe they thought they were being constructive in terms of expressing the energy they want him to have in videos, but if the guy's depressed then that's not his fault and what can ya do. Much love

I love the point of this video and it is a really important thing to keep in mind - you don't know how someone is feeling.
With that being said, I randomly 'guessed' 5/6 correct lol and had my gut answer a couple seconds after he started talking. Basing completely on how at ease he came off.
^ BUT I only did it because it was the point of the video/game. I've never thought before ooo this guy seems really depressed or not.
    Love ya guys!

“Can I guess if my boyfriends depressed?” I do a similar game with people I'm comfortable with “thriving or surviving” I say that if I think somethings wrong and they could say “slightly thriving” or “barely surviving”
Also I really love that you openly talk about depression and anxiety. As someone who struggles with both seeing it be talked about more is rlly nice. ❤

I love this video mostly because I also periodically suffer more from my mental health and not a lot of people know.

Got 5/6 Correct, but I'm a doctor (not in mental health though). In general, and without re-watching this to validate the comment, it strikes me that Ryan took less care of his personal appearance when he was depressed. And that makes sense to me. You two are cute. Thanks for your treatment of the subject.

If I wasn’t familiar with your channel, I would have 100% believed you in the introduction because Sam is obviously common for both boys and girls, but I have met two girls named Ryan (just spelled differently)

I got 5/6 (the only one I got wrong was the Disney one) as well as got the bonus correct. It’s probably because I’ve been depressed all of Covid (not because of Covid family issues and other things) as well as have always gravitated to people that need a friend so most of my friends have depression or some other mental illness. Either way sending love to you Ryan💗

People don’t really talk about masking in terms of depression. You hear about it for autism and adhd but not depression. As a fellow masker of depression, I was able to guess 5 out of 6 correctly. I wasn’t looking for depression. I was looking for masking. We get very good at not letting others see what’s inside of that dark part of us. We don’t even know we are doing it.
And the statement about contextualizing things that can’t be contextualized is perfect and it’s what a lot of people without depression don’t realize. Depression is a thing that just happens to us. Everything can be in our favor and we might be depressed. Sad or disappointing things might be happening and instead of depressed we are able to power through it because that day we aren’t depressed. There doesn’t need to be a reason.
